Oops! - Dropped and cracked Nexus 7 Screen - SOL?

This seems to be happening quite a bit. My screen cracked on my Nexus 7 after 5 days. I didn't drop it or anything. It was even in a silicone skin and had a screen protector on it. But it still cracked from one side to the other. I googled "Nexus 7 Screen Crack" and noticed several posts about the screen coming "Unglued" or lifting from the chasis in the middle of the tablet on the left side. Upon checking mine, I noticed it was lifted and the crack was located just below the lift of the glass. I've since sent it to Asus and am waiting a response on repair and if it will be covered as a manufacturer defect. When speaking to the Asus rep, he said he had not heard anything about the glass lifting in the middle of the tablet. I told him to google it and check it out. They've had the tablet for 3 days now and still waiting to hear from the repair tech.
This sounds like a pretty weak screen if a drop can crack it. My 3 year old has handled my wife's iPad and dropped it a couple time and there hasn't been any damage to it! This is very disappointing Google/Asus! :(
Add me to this unfortunate list, effective yesterday. Slipped my N7 in my cargo pants pocket for an otherwise uneventful 10 min ride to work -- only like 3rd time it left the house even. When I got to work & pulled it out, there it was, a "spider web" crack pattern emanating from the middle of the left side. No drops or anything, the most stress it would have come under was sitting down in my car set, as the pants leg naturally "tighten" when you sit -- but they still seemed pretty loose to me, so couldn't have been THAT much stress. ON a perhaps related note, it seemed to me in using it over the weekend that the touchscreen was getting a little less responsive, numerous times it seemed to "lose contact" and drop when I was dragging objects in some games (tiles Words with Friends, etc). Maybe this was a symptom of it starting to "unglue" as you call it.

I was going to buy another (and put it in a case, as much as they annoy me because the bulk defeats half the point of a tablet, and I *really* like the grippy rubber back on the N7), but reading that this may be a product defect that can happen again no matter if I get a case, or HOW careful I am really gives me pause. Too bad, it's a great tablet otherwise.

So I just received a response from ASUS. It also took 9 days to receive the response as it did for TheTimmyC and I received the same response. It will cost $150 to repair & another $10 to ship it back to me. It's unconscionable to pay $150 to repair a $250 tablet after 5 days of light usage. Not to mention this crack was likely caused by the "lifting" on the screen from the bezel. I don't think it's a coincidence that sooooo many people are reporting screen cracks with the first batch of tablets that have been available for barely a month. This is a manufacturer defect and ASUS needs to repair these at no cost!
I just sent a response back stating the same thing. Let's see what ASUS will come back with. I plan to make a stink of this issue and will not let it rest.
aquinoent: Please let me know where things are with this now, if Google/ASUS acknowledges this as a defect. Are you still trying? Maybe we can work together somehow. I haven't tried to contact them yet myself.

I just returned my Nexus back to Walmart because after 4 days the screen become unresponsive and only displayed vertical lines. Neither screen nor lcd was cracked. So I'm not sure what happened but it wasn't dropped or damage physically in any way.

I had no trouble returning it especially since I had a 3 year warranty which was purchased along with the device for $28 extra.

Lastly I was able to wipe my Nexus before returning it since I had SeekDroid installed. Had I not been able to wipe it, I would have had to change all my passwords, amazon, google, netflix, hulu, etc.

If you are sending your device in for repair or selling as-is on Ebay, I highly recommend finding a way to wipe your device beforehand...

To enter the factory reset mode, hold down POWER and VOLUME DOWN buttons for about 15 seconds. Somewhere in there you can wipe the device.

Square trade. You can add insurance within 30 days and file a claim

Hello everyone.
I'm in the UK and only had my Nexus 7 for a short time, my daughter dropped it today a couple of feet to the floor and crack :( has anyone else got an idea of what Asus would charge in the UK?
Contacted Google play and was sent Asus' phone number, will have to try and call them tomorrow.
Also dose anyone use the USB port to attach a mouse and keyboard? How dose that work?
Cheers.

I am an Apple guy, and I decided to give this Nexus 7 tablet a shot. I couldn't be further dissatisfied. I've had it two weeks, never dropped it, tonight, it accidentally fell 3 feet off my bed onto the floor which is carpeted, and the screen is cracked in several places and non responsive to touch. I'm sorry but THAT IS GARBAGE! I called google, they pawned me off on ASUS, I called ASUS, sat on hold over an hour, never got anyone. Thoroughly disgusted with this tablet, and the horrible excuse for customer service its manufacturers provided. This is why Apple will always stay a step ahead.

We all got the new iPad at work. This girl put it on a leather chair to and it slid off onto the office carpet, which is thin as hell. Screen shattered from a one foot drop into carpet.

$hit happens. Don't troll. Buy a case.

oh my! Just off the phone to Asus and they want to charge me the price of the new screen the labour to fix it and ?60 for shipping!! Almost $95 just to get it to them and back. It seems to get it repaired it would cost more than it's worth.

Hello again,

I was the one who posted about having a discount on the device.
So, I made more calls to the customer service and actually made the receptionist make a
note on my complaints to the customer care department. I also e-mailed the ASUS CEOs
in Taiwan about how the ASUS service sucks (though I doubt they read my email).

After getting the discount, I decided to just get it repaired. But after the calls and emails,
they suddenly changed their mind and transferred my unit to California, where they will "test" it and send me a replecement unit. I called customer service again, and I asked for what could be the cost. So far, no cost for replcement on my side. Only problem is they have to "test" it. No idea what exactly this test is as the repair facility in Texas already did this process.

Unit is in transportation to Califorani, and I hope to hear from them soon.

I really really hope this goes somewhere (possibly no/low cost replcement unit would be the best scenario).

Hi guys, I just bought my 16 gb Nexus 7 on the google playstore website and one week later, I drop it in my concrete floor garage. But here's the best part. I'm 12 years old and spent my whole summer mowing lawns. What should I do? I mowed over 50 lawns to get this Nexus 7. What's funny is I was shopping for a case on it when I dropped it.

i got mine for ny birthday and mine slipped out of the case, down the stairs and smashes. its completely unresponsive!! it was the first time i put it on the bad quality stupid case. its too expensive to repair and i cant do anything about it! if uve had it for 2 weeks u can exchange it. i had mine or 2 weeks and 2 days :-(:-(

Exactly.

Sad its broken, but its not Google or Asus's fault that you (or your kid) dropped it.

Next time use a solid, sturdy case or take your chances.

Good luck.

Same thing happened here. It's totally unacceptable that this ASUS co is selling a defected product which HAS to be the case, based on so many recorded complaints in such a short period since the said product launched. I wonder if we could somehow make ASUS realize their error in these early batches and allow us to return this tablet in exchange for a new one.

If you or anyone reading this comment has any feasible ideas, please let me know. I refuse to have to pay again almost the full original price for a problem that I hardly caused. :(

It's unconscionable that these people at ASUS think they can get away with things of this nature. Terrible business practices. These screens are as weak as Chinese crystal. They should replace them free of charge. After reading so many complaints, i can only assume this was/is a manufacturer's defect. I'm open to ideas and/or suggestions. I've had the tablet for just 2 weeks before i dropped it from a table to a thick carpeted floor. If an elephant would have run over it, it would be a different story. Geesh!

I sat down with the Nexus 7 in my back pocket and cracked the screen. Just an inner layer, as the touch screen still works. The whole right side of the display has gone black. The left side is still okay.

I called Google, and they gave me Asus's phone number. I've got an RMA number and will ship it back tomorrow.

Has anyone gotten a repair cost yet for a user induced cracked screen?

I heard it costs almost as much as a new tablet. I wish they'd reconsider since they have made the screens impossibly weak.

Add me to the list of cracked screens. Mine fell off the night stand onto a carpeted floor. Ridiculously fragile. I see many, many unhappy customers in Google's future. Putting mine in a drawer till replacement screens become reasonably priced.

Add me to the list. My Nexus 7 was about 3 weeks old and was never dropped but the screen cracked. It worked fine one minute, I carried it to a different room and when I went to use it the touch screen was unresponsive and then I noticed a crack going through the screen. Clearly based on all the complaints out there in the relatively short time that the product has been on the market indicates that the product is flawed. It is a shame that Asus is not owning up to it.

yes they sell insurance for it at walmart or you can purchase squaretrade insurance for it eithin 30 days of purchase.

Sucks to hear that all these ppl are cracking their screens.... that's exactly y I have a hard case on it and a screen protector... I got my N7 from Walmart.... anyone know if they offer some kind of insurance for it....

Its apiece of friggin glass and electronics what do you expect to happen to happen when you drop it? To bounce? Get smart people and get protectors on your devices!

I'm not an idiot - not only did I have a protector but I also did not drop it. I know it's friggin glass but it should be built to withstand normal use rather than built like fine china. Oddly enough my Ipad has been dropped numerous times with no damage so apparently it's possible to build a electonic device that can be used.

Cracked my screen while I pried off the back to "fix" my weak wifi reception. Wish I had not read about this fix in the first place.

Read again: cracked while prying off the back!

Minutes before that my phone (HTC G2) fell yet again to the ground with no damages at all. I wonder how long will it take Google to realize that they have put their name and a very inferior product. I'll sell mine on ebay and cut my losses. Better wait for a more robust product.
