Optimizing G4 battery thread

After tweaking some things and uninstalling a thing or two, I thought maybe that high Android OS Keep Awake number had been addressed last night. I wanted to wait for a full charge and see, though.

Nope.

Thus (we think) my overall battery life again sucks today. I don't think i've had a day when the drain per hour overall fell below 7.something% and it often tops 8%. 11.5% is particularly galling, but I did take a bunch of pics today.

What screen brightness is everyone using? Is everyone using auto or do you have it set at a specific point? I've used a lot of the tips and tricks in this thread to adjust battery usage. Yesterday I got just over 3.5 hours SOT, with a total of 13 hours up. I have my screen set at 50%

I've also been using Lux and think it's an amazing app. So much better than auto that the phone does.

Ok, as promised, here's a full battery cycle (almost) with Gsam running.

I really can't complain to much.

I haven't listed how I run my phone for a while so here it is:

Lux for Auto brightness
Gmail sync
2 email accounts on Exchange
VPN always running when I'm on Wi-Fi
Notifications turned on for quite a few apps ( slickdeals, G+, XDA, Twitter, weather, tapatalk, Xbox smartglass)
Access Lock used to turn off Keep Awake from most apps

I'm happy. I think there is a little more I can tweak that won't effect my daily use.

As for keep awake on Android OS, I'm still investigating.

Our phones aren't conjoined twins, but your setup is similar enough to mine that we should be in the same ballpark with battery life. I'm on Verizon, by the way.

I've done a little snooping around and have seen this same issue (although it has to be a broad one at its core) back to 2011 and ICS. By broad I mean it's probably something different each time causing the issue under the hood, but the awake time in Kernel/Andorid OS has been around for quite a while.

As for suggestions to help address it, I saw a post from 2013 that suggsted it could be caused by wireless routers. I haven't noticed any WiFi issues otherwise, but tomorrow I will use LTE and see what happens.

Before that, though, I just re-seated my SIM card, as this was another cause for continual wakelocks for the poster who had the problem. I want to see if that fixes the issue, and if not, off goes the G4's WiFi tomorrow to see if that changes anything.

Beyond that, I remain at a loss. There isn't any remaining app or feature that is giving me any noticeable issues otherwise. The phone is running very smoothly and quickly. Nothing is crashing. I dunno.

Thanks again for your help with this tourbound.

No problem at all. Happy to help where I can.

I ran with Wi-Fi off on 1 cycle and i believe I had almost 24 hours up time and almost 4 hours SOT. Same settings, etc. The only thing I don't know is the keep awake for Android OS because I didn't screen shot it.

However, since the phone is keeping the Wi-Fi connection active, maybe it does cause issues.

I will say that on this last cycle the keep awake was just a little over 2 hours on 15 hours of screen off time. Considering all the notifications, emails, etc during that time, I might be hard pressed to think it could actually be better with the way I use my phone.

I've had my Droid Turbo booted up today. Has a SIM card in it but it isn't activated anymore. Just took a look, and it's been off charge for 4:49:10. Keep awake in Android OS is 2:05:22.

So that stat was high on the Turbo, too. The battery on that phone is a beast, and so it could mask some issues, but maybe instead of 8+ SoT and 1 day total I should have been getting 36 hours total or something.

This was not enlightening.

Battery is garbage, light use you get only about 3 hours of on screen time.

Yes I have, I done all the tips I found here and on xda forums. Also thought it was faulty phone so tried a second one. Same results of about 3 hours of screen time if I'm lucky. Screen on auto bright which is dull usually.
Such a great camera with such an awful battery.

How about screenshots of battery use so maybe we can take a look and diagnose what's going on.

Which carrier?

6 hours since unplugged, and the Android OS keep awake time was 48 minutes. I think that was 2 hours for around 6 hours overall last night. I think this may be coincidence of some sort. I kind of doubt re-seating the SIM card really did this. If it happoens again I'll be more hopeful.

Regardless, that 6 hours still has me discharging at 7% an hour overall.

I think it's time to start nuking apps related to central functions (i.e. third party dialer app so I don't have to deal with the white monstrosity). If I can't use some of that sort of stuff, it does start to diminish my enjoyment of the phone.

That app is EDialer Pro, if anyone esle is using that I'd be interested in how your battery and keep awake in Android OS look. EZDialer is working functionally just fine. No hint of problems.

From something I read earlier (and assuming it's still structured this way) the Android OS category is sub-function stuff.

Now yoiu know I've gone mad. I'm talking to myself...and responding!

G4 has only been on battery for 2 h 3 m this morning. Yet, Held Awake is 33 m overall and 23 m kept awake for the Android OS entry.

Extrapolating that info to the 6 hours or so I'd been comparing the past couple of nights, we're back up to over an hour of awake time for Android OS for a 6 hour period. So, I don't think re-seating the SIM fixed the issue.

On the bright side, it looks like I can re-install EZDialer Pro.

Ugh.

Wondering if the Android OS high level of wake time might be tied to carrier? Thinking since I'm on Verizon, there is Advanced Calling 1.0 (VoLTE) that is unique to it and a basic part of the phone's mechanisms (making and receiving calls that is).

So today I noticed an interesting notification on my screen. At the bottom of the LG weather widget screen (Smart notifications?) there was a small number 1. When I tapped on it a message came up telling me that and app I use to track my steps and heart rate called Cinch was using a lot of battery. The notification indicated more than 2% per hour and recommended disabling the app. Interesting, I didn't know the phone had that capability. Anyone else see a notification there like that?

I've also been following a lot of the suggestions that y'all have talked about including disabling Fit - which I also use to track my fitness in conjunction with my Moto 360 smart watch, disabling location reporting, etc. Been unplugged for 13 hours today with screen brightness set at 50% with auto off and I have 55% battery left. SOT is only 1 hour 15 minutes as I use my phone a lot, but don't have the screen on for long periods.

The hospital I work in has terrible wifi - at least the WiFi were allowed to use, and the Verizon signal, in spite of a tower "on top of the hospital" is marginal at best. My G2 required charging at least twice a day, sometimes more, so with the G4 I'm in good shape.

Funny thing I noticed, Google Play Services is listed in the stock battery info app as taking 15%, while in GSAM, it shows as only 4%. in any event, my battery drain is reported as 3.7% per hour which seems good.

I installed Lux today. So far I like it. I am starting with the free version and will upgrade to the paid app if I decide to keep it. So far it is keeping well under 50%, 30 - 40 range. I've only been out in the sunlight twice since installing it and both times it put me up in the high 80's low 90's. I'm curios to see how much SOT I get over the next week.
