Optimizing G4 battery thread

Tried the suggestions on here except for the turning off gmail sync and the bloat remover. I disabled Google now for a while and was still getting around 3 hours on screen, so I re-enabled it. I don't understand how some people are getting 5-6 hours while I get 2-3. Just cleared all the cache for my apps and am hoping it will improve. Also, my on screen time is spent on low brightness, so it isn't like I'm at 100%. Closer to 0% and automatic and indoors.

Don't hate me but try turning off all your Google syncs and see if it's still services killing your battery?

Chrome & Hangouts were killing my battery, not sure why and since I'm not really interested in either I just disabled and moved on. There's a ton of Google stuff that wreaks havoc on batteries, I like the Google ecosystem but since they seem to be working against their creation I'll pass on most of them.

What is your up time?

If you click on Google play services and Android OS, how much time is listed next to Keep Awake?

I have a Microsoft band and when I use Bluetooth, the keep awake time seems to skyrocket. So even though Bluetooth in itself may be low power, the effect it has on the system is an issue.

This is today now so far....Not good at all and I have stopped syncing pretty much everything but gmail on my Google account.

My uptime was only like 8 or 9 hours. Just disabled all my Google syncs except for gmail and apps. I need the gmail sync but the others I can actually do without. If it's still bad I may just suck it up. It's not too bad because of two batteries and quick charge.

Have to figure out what is making Google play services keep the phone awake. It's killing the battery. Just for comparison, I'm at 50% right now, 7 hours up time, over 3 hours SOT and Google Play Services only has 3 minutes keep awake.

Yeah and it was using just as much on my nexus 6 as well I'm really at a loss and it's very frustrating right now. I love the phone but can't deal with half a day battery life.

Which carrier? What are you syncing for Google services?

I remember back when I used the samsung epic (galaxy S1), out of box I only got about 12 hours out of a full charge before getting the 15% low battery warning. With tweeks much like being used here minus the disabling wake permissions I managed to get it to last 30 hours on a full charge. Granted I also didn't use that phone for 3 hours or more a day as I do now and the past year or so. I personally don't doubt the results some have managed to do with a lot of tweaking. I personally so far on my G4 have gained about 25% longer on a full charge and am still figuring out the wake lock app so I can find the misc unseen stuff that is keeping mine awake when not in use. I have a feeling once I figure that out and take care of those things I'll get a full more than 24 hours on a full charge with my normal daily use. Right now my G4 is being kept awake for several times longer than the screen on time. Today screen on time is 2 hours as of this posting and 11 hours of wake time. Yesterday was 3 hours of screen on time and 8 hours of wake time.

I won't speak for the OP but as someone who has contributed a lot of time to this thread, I don't think Gsam is needed. I used it for 2 days to help someone out but then uninstalled. I don't really see a need to have a monitoring application running everyday using resources for no reason. If people come here and don't believe the screenshots that I posted, then frankly, oh well. I'm not here for some SOT contest. I'm here to help where I can. My phone performs how I need it to with no compromises. I tweak where I need to make it even better.

There's no battery life cheating going on in this thread. Real results, good and bad.

I use Gsam (and I appreciated you doing so to try and help me), but agree with your overall point.

I use it, because for whatever reason, I get a better sense of how my overall and SoT battery performance is progressing or regressing over time. The Android battery stats don't keep a running average over multiple charges.

Now that I've seemingly tamed the savage beast, I'll watch those numbers for a few more days in Gsam and then likely uninstall it, too.

I have kept it installed for much longer periods in the past, and it has alerted me to what I'd call significant dips in battery performance at times (i.e. a loss of a half hour or more of total battery life a day). At the same time, though, I always wondered how much Gsam itself was using.

Oh, and this idea of people gaming battery stats? If you want truly scientific results, don't come to an online forum. Or own a smartphone.

Beyond that, it's laughable to me that anyone would actually bother to fudge the numbers, but this is the Internet.

And I'm happy to help anytime I can. If I was troubleshooting my own device and needed more info I would probably have it installed just don't see the need as things are going great with my device. Gsam is a great tool, no doubt about it.

I'm sure it's resource use is pretty limited but I would guess that on any given day it could run rogue like any other app.

I've had my new (replacement) Verizon G4 for a few days. I did a factory reset, and loaded a minimal set of apps. I don't know, 15 or so, trying to keep it to the "essentials". With GSam, Battery Monitor Widget, CPU-Z, and Battery Widget Reborn, for monitoring purposes.

It's been on for 14 hours, I have 3 hours SOT, the phone has been awake for 2:50, I'm down to 14%. At times I'm pretty sure that Awake was longer than the SOT, earlier in the day. I've had WiFi off all day, and Bluetooth on. Towards the end of the day I turned the radio from Global to LTE/CDMA. I keep Auto Brightness on, set to 6%.

My signal at work is not great (usually 3G, sometimes 1X, occasionally no network at all), which probably does not help.

My results today are a little better than my last G4, on its last day. On that particular day (just a single data point, I know, but I remember the results) I got 2 hours of SOT and was at 21%, over the span of roughly 8 hours. I was doing some backups over WiFi that day, unfortunately, prepping for returning the phone.

I was hoping the minimal app load, etc, would further improve my results. Instead, I'd say today's are fairly similar to the last phone, given that I wasn't backing up over WiFi today. I'll keep trying to tweak things.

Now that I have the second battery, that admittedly helps ease my mind a bit. And for better or worse, getting similar results to the first phone makes me suspect that this battery performance is "normal". At least for my signal environment, and usage pattern. I'd definitely like it to be better, however.

I'm about ready to put mine on the charger at 12% left.
Time on battery: 36hrs, 52 minute
Screen: 26%, SOT 4hrs. 33m.
Chrome Beta: 13%
Cell standby 10%
Android system 7%
Everything else, 6% or less.

I just took some screen shots, but I'm too dumb to know how to post them. It's interesting that some of the apps that seem to be ravaging some people's batteries (such as play services) don't even show up in my stats.

My first time trying to run the battery down, these pics include 2 hours of Spotify streaming, some you tube, a ton of forum reading , about 40m of phone calls, Facebook, twitter and more, I should also note this is with BT running all day connected to my Moto 360 and a ton of WiFi connectivity through out the day. I am impressed. Being that I am just at 20% now I imagine I could eek out another 30-1:00 if I needed. uploadfromtaptalk1436240585306.jpguploadfromtaptalk1436240742849.jpguploadfromtaptalk1436240752152.jpg

Today is the first day that google play services didn't show up on my G4 in either the built in battery stats or gsam. Google services did but at a lower percent (8% in both). Google play services was showing up at around 20%. Nothing changed as far as anything I altered or added or removed. I can't draw any conclusions about why today is different until more cycles are complete. Today could just be a fluke.

Here are my GSAM stats for today....still very disappointing :(
