Oreo messaging notifications

I am among the many of you that hate that they took this away... Does anyone know where we should go to file a complaint? I'm hoping a place where everyone can file out the same complaint and hopefully take a step toward them changing it. I know it's a long shot but I believe we have to try!

I'm very upset they took that away too. I'd too like to know where you can complian about it. which 3rd party apps are good in the mean time

What about people who don't want to use a different messaging app ? I want to be able to use the preinstalled messaging app and just change contact text tones like I've been able to forever. Seems really counterproductive on their part.

Textra and the google message app are crap because they don't allow you to assign a notification per contact and do it instead per conversation. This means I have to add a notification sound everytime a new conversation happens and I have to wait for a conversation to begin before I can assign a notification. Also I can't tell who is talking in a group conversation without pulling out my phone and reading it ever time I get a notification. The point of custom notifications is so I can tell how important a notification is without contastantly pulling out my phone and looking at it. I don't need to immidently read ever notification I get ,but there are some notifications that I do need to read right away and thanks to this crap I have to pull my phone out of my pocket over 100 times a day just to make sure I don't miss an important text message.

Not true. You can assign a notification tone per person in Textra.....actually maybe that is true. I will have to go check.

It's true. You can only assign a person once you start a conversation with them unfortunately.

Sigh...using verizon text app is okay but....you cannot set ringtone notification until someone in your contacts messages you....Really hoping there's some patch to fix this if enough people ***** about it to Samsung and Google.

That's a limitation since Textra doesn't have a contacts interface. GoSMS can do what you want if you install the GoContacts app too but it's bloated and has a crapload of ads.

I'm cool with the way Textra does it. I was just answering the other poster's question. Thanks though. Gosms has become horrid. Lol

Here's a serious issue- I used to be able to add spam text senders to my blocked list from within the stock Samsung messaging app. I've switched to the Verizon text app just to get the ability to have contact specific text alerts again. However, there's no way apparent to me to be able to block spam senders in Verizon's app. It seems there's no perfect text app that combines all the logical functions a text app should have. Still do not understand why they feel the need to screw this up.

Found it! For days I've been looking for the settings to customize my incoming messages sound. On my S8+ and S6 you could easily go into the Menu (top right) while in "Messages" to change "Backgrounds" and sounds for incoming messages. For whatever reason, that is not as easy. Tina at TMobile and I found this by accident just now. So this is how to make your incoming message a custom sound (I use Zedge).
1) Go into Messages
2) Tap Menu icon (Top Right)
3) Go into Settings
4) Tap Notifications
5) Tap New Messages
6) Tap Sound option and there are te default sounds and hopefully your downloaded sounds
Different way from making your Incoming Message sounds than prior Galaxys.

Sidenote
Go thru same steps till you get to "Sound" tab and above it is an "Importance" tab which I see no reason for. It lets you choose 4 different options on how important any incoming messages are..."Urgent, High, Medium or Low." Really? Wouldn't all incoming messages be important and if not, put your phone on silent. I must not be that sociable to categorize incoming messages. Sound, sound and pop up, etc... Guess someone thought it was important enough to place on Oreo. Hope this helps with customizing incoming message sounds.

I'm not currently using YAATA, but have in the past. This is probably the most customizable free texting app I've ever seen.

I don't care so much about the contact specific ringtone. My beef is losing the ability to flash a different color LED for different notifications. I know I can use apps like Light Flow, but I'd rather not have to go through all that. Message+ had that option, but then removed it after Oreo.

I finally gave in and starting using the Google Android messaging app. it's okay- it works for me. Someone mentioned you can only set message tones per conversation and not per person. But I never use SMS for group messaging. Just one person per conversation, so for me, it's the same a setting a tone for just one person.

That's actually not true. Google Messenger App DOES allow you to assign a notification sound to each contact. You have to be in a conversation with the contact, tap on the 3 bars at the top right, tap on "People & options", tap on notifications, tap on "Sound", and you can select your tone for that contact.

I switched to Google Contacts, also, but can't add a notification sound from there, either. You have to tap on "Text" and change each one that way. Very time consuming, but it works. :)

If you're on Verizon try their messaging app. It works for me.
I've been using the Verizon messaging app for ages and there is no place to specify a tone just for texts - not for each person but for all texts. I had to change to Textra.

Just use a different SMS app.

I think it is dumb they took that away. I use the default messaging app because it works good, no ads, and it worked good with accessories like gear s3 and s3, and others. I tried another sms app and there are ads, and doesn't work with accessories like I need it to. They need to bring it back.......
