[OTA][9/21] Official Jelly Bean JRO03O for the Verizon GNex

Re: [OTA] Semi-Official Jelly Bean JRO03O for the Verizon GNex

It's easier. You treat it like a rom, not an update--so you wipe everything fully (instead of just wiping cache or not wiping anything at all). You don't need to be on a certain version of ICS or whatever to flash it--just flash it on whatever you're on.

For roms (and any of this), I strongly recommend reading my Don't Panic guide before getting deep into the process :).

Ok, but do I still need to root my phone or unlock the bootloader? The instructions don't say anything about it. If I don't then what's the benefit of doing an OTA? It just seems like a lot more hassle and risk.

You need to install a recovery it like any other rom; thus, you must unlock the bootloader at the very least.

I really recommend reading our guides. They'll help you and let you become familiar with the terms and procedures. :)

So since 4.0.4 had a build date of April 13 and it was pushed to the public on May 31......4.1.1 with a build date of July 16 should have been pushed to the public on August 31. Guess they don't have a pattern to follow, so let's hope for September 31.

Actually, Sept 2nd would be 48 days after build date. Maybe with the holiday, we aim for Thursday or next Tuesday?

Flashed this on my Gnex last Friday and haven't had any issues. Pure joy all around.

For the custom recovery I installed TWRP 2.2.2.0 via fastboot and then regained root by flashing Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip afterwards (OTA Rootkeeper didn't work for me).

First, thanks for the tutorial. I’m a complete N00b, and I have a couple of questions.

I had a completely stock phone. I have managed to unlock the boot loader following your tutorials, THANK YOU!

I would like to get the jelly bean update now, and then be able to reflash the stock recovery once the official update comes out so that I can get that.

I have watched the video, and I am wondering if I can skip the CWM download altogether and just do the following:

Download IMM76Q and JRO03O directly to my phones download folder using the links on page 1.
Go into fast boot mode and toggle to Recovery.
Select Install Zip from SD Card.
Select Choose Zip from SD.
Select the IMM76Q from IMM76K file.
Let the phone updated and then Reboot.

Repeat the above process selecting the JRO03O from IMM76Q.

Will that work in theory. No need go on the computer and download CWM, I can just do all the above from my phone?

Will I still be able to go back to stock if I follow the steps above and do I need to create a backup file before use the unofficial update so I can use it to go back to stock?

You're welcome :).

I do not believe so, mainly because the stock recovery looks for very precise things. It's safer/easier just to fastboot a recovery (if you want to, simply boot it, don't flash it) and flash the zips.

Will I still be able to go back to stock if I follow the steps above and do I need to create a backup file before use the unofficial update so I can use it to go back to stock?

I'd create a backup just to be safe. Remember, you can always go back using what we did in the tutorial. If you follow my return to stock guide (or watch the video) you'll be A-OK.

No worries, let me know if you have any other questions!

Re: [OTA] Semi-Official Jelly Bean JRO03O for the Verizon GNex

I found that I had to delete my ICS Superuser app to be able to do the update. I was rooted but on stock IMM76K. The first time I updated, it worked fine initially but both SuperSU & Superuser showed up and running either resulted in bootloops (not full reboots tho). I was unable to do anything that required root access (rootexplorer, etc) so I had to go back to my nandroid backup before the update. Then I deleted superuser.apk and su from the system areas, then did the updates again and applied SuperSU and its working fine now. Didn't lose any data or have to wipe.

In the video at around 40:00 you flash CWM to recovery, then someone says alternatively you can just boot recovery if you intend to stay stock. What the heck does that mean? I guess I don't understand why you need to flash CWM to recovery.

I choose to flash (and the majority of folks recommend it) because it's a powerful tool that can easily be replaced. You need the custom recovery in order to flash this stuff; you won't be able to do that with the stock recovery.

For flashing the recovery, use this input:

Code:
fastboot flash recovery [nameofrecoveryimage].img

For booting the recovery, where you will boot into CWM but you won't flash it, preserving stock recovery, use this input:

Code:
fastboot boot recovery [nameofrecoveryimage].img

However, did you watch the portion of the video where, when rebooting system in CWM, the user had the option of choosing no (which results in stock recovery "sticking") or yes (which results in CWM sticking)? That's another viable option.

I did watch that. I'm trying to understand all the steps and what they are doing, and I'm hopelessly out of my depth. Once again, thanks for the help! :-)

No worries. I had no idea that option existed because I use TWRP (which, if I may say, is the best recovery out there for the Galaxy Nexus ;)).

Regarding the "reverting" stuff:

Essentially, there's a file in the rom/OS "/system" partition/folder that basically tells a newly flashed recovery to go screw itself. So once you use that newly flashed custom recovery, the old one reverts per that file. This caused a lot of panic early on, because folks would flash CWM and then, when they go to boot in for subsequent flashing, you'd see the exclamation point there. However, we adapted, and now if you see the file you can either rename it or delete it. CWM took it one step further and allows you to simply remove at the reboot (by pressing "yes").

FWIW, all roms have removed this pesky little bugger :).

The file, in case your interested, is this:

/system/recovery-from-boot.p

If you see it and wish to rename it, rename it this:

/system/recovery-from-boot.p-bak

What is the easiest way to update Google Wallet? It is showing I have an update for it in the play store but says my device isn't compatible. I dont want to fry the Secure Element.

I'll be honest, I haven't used it in months. We have a
few wallet threads though, try those.

Thank you so much for this.

You're welcome!
