I rooted my HTC One and installed the google play edition rom. This is the first time I've ever rooted as previously had Nexus handsets and was happy with stock android.
I was under the impression that I would not receive OTA updated having rooted but today got the version Y.H1 update OTA and it seems to have installed fine. (it initially launched TWRP and failed to update, then rebooted and ran the update through android). Is this normal?

My phone is GSM version, carrier is Vodafone UK.

Thanks

Usually when rooted it will just fail to install. I've seen people say they've gotten the security update that was just recently released, which is probably what that is, and they were steered away from updating. Although one guy did try it and he said it just failed to install.

What do you mean by you ran the update through android?

Thanks for reply. To clarify:
When i got the notification that the update was ready to install, I clicked to install.
The phone then rebooted and went into recovery mode.
TWRP tried to install it but failed and came up with a few errors before rebooting the phone.
The phone then restarted and booted up normally into Android
It then said system updating (took a few minutes)
Then it went to the sim unlock screen.
I put in my simlock password, went to About Phone and it showed JWR66Y.H1 (which I think is the updated version)

When it said system updating, did it say restoring apps or something like that? Or had a count of all the apps that were being updated?

If it says you are on the same build number as the update then I would have to assume it did update. Although that wouldn't really make sense if it failed.

Yes it said restoring (or maybe said updating) apps and counted through to 80.

That happens because the recovery wipes your caches before attempting the update. That doesn't mean it actually updated it. So it really may not have updated anything.

Theres no way it updated with a custom recovery installed, It needs the stock recovery to stick.

I received the OTA, and it failed while installing because I had CWM recovery installed. I flashed the stock GE recovery, and the the OTA installed normally.

I also thought I wouldn't be getting OTAs. I guess I'll find out for sure when 4.4 is pushed out to the GE phones.

is there a way to root this phone, instal GPE Rom, and get OTA updates? one reason i dont want to root is because i get consumed with falshing roms, or updates when they arrive. ultimately what i would like to do is turn my ATT version of the HTC One into a GPE One, and never have to mess with roms again. all while still getting OTA updates. i read somewhere they with s-off ( not sure what that means) there is a way to still get OTA updates...

Bear_Ix - I'm not sure if you have extra hoops to jump through since you're on AT&T, but this is what I did on my T-Mobile version:

I unlocked the bootloader through the HTCDev site;
I followed the instructions here: [ROM][m7]Android 4.3 JWR66V Google Play Ed. - Rooted/Busybox/Odexed/Deodexed (8/6/13) - xda-developers
basically, I flashed the ROM, and then flashed the stock GE recovery that is in the above thread. I am not S-off, and I have not changed my CID. I did receive the latest OTA, and it installed normally once I installed the stock recovery. Only time will tell if I will receive the 4.4 OTA when it's released, but I am optimistic since I received the last OTA.

Hope this helps.

What build or what version # are you on? Also your cid determines what signal and data icons will be displayed.

JWR66Y.H1

One other thing that I noticed. After installing the last OTA, my HTC splash screen changed. After I rooted and flashed the ROM, I had the statement in red font saying that this was a test build. Since I installed the OTA, the HTC splash screen is back to normal, with only an unlocked icon at the bottom, which denotes my unlocked bootloader.

I unlocked my bootloader and rooted to run arliberator form my car HU.
anyway I am now getting prompts for software updates on my HTC one it downloads and runs but then reboots in to TWRP recovery, can somebody give me a pointer on how to proceed, id like to update to 4.3 but maintain my root etc.

Cheers
