Well from the way I am understanding so far is if you are rooted on a new device or leaked software then it is too late. I am okay with Verizon knowing I am rooted. I paid full price for my TBOLT. I have not illegally used tether and don't plan on it. I just read from my phone. I hope they don't start restricting service though I have really picked up a enjoyable hobby in rooting and flashing roms. We will see if I have to I will revert to stock but I would really enjoy being able to customize my phone.

I understand that people that don't know what they are doing with rooting are causing issues with warrenty claims. If they have to track who mods their phone so that it doesn't cost them on stupid claims I get it. Just give us the option.

Id love to say how I feel about p3 info and the gb leak but ill keep my mouth shut.... I do think carriers should protect their money and not let root users tether for free but locking down open Android is not the way. I dont know what is.

nobody is making changes to the network, we are making LEGAL changes to devices we legally own.

I believe p3 may know some inside verizon folks. he obviously has some sort of connections.
I don't believe he has inside connections at google or any other cell carrier. (i've seen no evidence to suggest that)

just because HTC locked down a phone doesn't mean for a fact that it's "industry wide" and that "google is part of it"
based on everything i've read i see no evidence of that what so ever. it's speculation to say any of that IMO.

IMO Verizon is not going to do anything to root users.
they MAY go after users whom tether without paying.. i think that's BS, but i can see them maybe doing that.

It's not totally unexpected that carriers would eventually do even more to mess with Rooters, but that P3 would have us load something without cautioning first is completely surprising and upsetting.

Here's to hoping a good thing doesn't get ruined and Android stays true to what brought most of us to it in the first place.

I'm glad I didn't go to GB yet. I have it all and on my card but I just didn't have downtime to leave my phone with no service for a while.

Root tracker is just stupid. There are a few of us who root their phones for other uses like screen shot, over/underclocking, and freezing bloatware.

The way that they were able to track rooted users is based on pushing updates to phones, and then tracking which meid's did not take the update.

Big deal, they are tracking which phones didn't take an update.
I'm sure every single phone that didn't get an update isn't rooted.
it's speculative to assume it's based only on trying to find rooted users.

i think everyone should continue to enjoy GB and just go on with life..

Except that they have actually done something, just ask the customers over at AT&T ask how many of them now have a charge on their bill for tethering that they didn't authorize.

The discussion is really about what they are planning to do anyway not what they have already done, and the evidence points to the carriers not allowing rooted phones on their data network.

Ther are several reasons they'd care if you root your phone, the first you already pointed out, is that you can tether for free. It's still unclear if they can see that you are tethering for free or if they simply see a spike in data usage in conjunction with a rooted phone and they are just assuming you're stealing. If they are unable to see that you are specifically using free tether then the policy would probably be a blanket hatred for all rooted phones because at that point every rooted phone has potential to tether without paying.

The other reason is that a rooted user can remove bloatware, which is a revenue source, and if the carriers endorsed or allowed rooting then what company would pay good money to have their bloatware installed on a phone that is just going to be rooted and have the offending app deleted.

Another reason is that the phone manufacturers themselves lose money when people root because why go out and buy a new handset when yours reaches end of life when you can just flash a new ROM with the latest updates onto your older device, but if rooted handsets arent allowed on networks that problem is solved.

There's also the warranty issues that you mentioned as well.

Verizon HAS done something! As of a couple of days ago, they began to block anyone from tethering unless through their paid mobile hotspot app.

And free tethering IS against the TOS you signed on contract. As is modifying your device, voiding the warranty.

This multi-carrier, not just Verizon.

Folks, this was a multi-carrier project from the get go. They've had data analyzers working on it since about a year ago. Yes, this is inside information, and No, I won't reveal my sources.

Actually it's industry wide is what he's saying. I am not sure why you're fighting so hard to deny what's happening, the evidence points to it, and if the evidence doesn't convince you then ask yourself ONE question:


Does rooting a phone affect the carriers and manufacturers bottom line negatively?


Answer that question truthfully and you'll know that what P3 said 100% correct.
