Pause, forward, back on Bluetooth headphones not responding.

Moto X is my first Android phone. My only smart phone before that was iPhone 4s. I will never go back Android is awesome. So awesome I got a Nexus 7 as well.

My headphones are LG Tone 750, but I owned the LG Tone 730 just a month ago and had the same issue.
When I listen to anything at some point my Pause, forward, back buttons stop responding. Most of the time if I turn the screen on and have the app open the buttons will start to work again. Then most of the time I can control with my headphones again. Some days 60% of the time I hit pause it works, sometimes less. I have even had days it never failed to work. I have tried restarting and it never makes any difference at all. I can find no pattern to this what so ever. Is there something I am not doing here, or do not know about android? So far this is the ONLY thing I liked more about iPhone. The controls always worked on my iPhone. Being free of iTunes is worth a hell of a lot more trouble than this.

The call/Google now, and volume buttons on my headphones have never stopped working.

This has happened on every app I have tried. Audible, Pocketcast, Smart Audiobook Player, I Heart Radio, Spotify, YouTube, so I don’t see how it could be an app issue. I have never listened on my Nexus for any length of time so I have no idea if this is Android issue or Moto X. I need to bring the Nexus to work and try it for a day.

Have any ideas?

Looking on the internet it seems to be a random issue only some people have and no one knows how to fix.

If you're still under warranty, I would look to get a repair /replacement. I can't think of a setting that would affect the use of those buttons. I have two different bluetooth headphones (Sony IS-H800 and Jaybird Bluebuds X) with controls on them and they both can pause and skip forward/reverse on my Moto X. Once in a while I need to press the pause button a second time to respond but they usually work flawlessly.

You could try deleting 3rs party audio apps to see if the problem persists, and of course a factory reset if you're willing.

Well I just had this happen while listening to spotify on my Nexus 7 so this is not a Moto X issue. I think it is an issue with the LG Tones. I have used two different lg tones and the issue was the same. So it had to be something in the way lg makes these that causes issues. On my nexus it seemed to fail after I relieved a notification.

My next plan is to go back to the stock launcher. I use action launcher on both so maybe that is the issue. Will stuck if it is because I really love the way they handle the app drawer, but I want my controls to work more.

I'm having this issue on a new Nexus 5 and its driving me crazy as I listen to my phone a lot throughout the day. Its completely random, to the point where if i press the power button over and over, I can watch the controls come and go...all without even unlocking my phone. If the album art and controls are on the screen, the buttons on my headphones (usually) work. I'm using the headphones that come with a GS III. As with you, all my phone and volume controls seem to work fine, its just the pause buton and the on screen controls on the lockscreen that fail (for when I'm driving).

I also don't have any 3rd party apps that are used to program the buttons on the headphones, so that's not my issue.

I've tried removing apps one at a time to try to pin the issue, but can't find anything.

One thing I might try today is to disable the widgets on my lockscreen to see if that's it. Not holding my breath though.

I also have this posted on the thread below (no other info to help though). If you get any progress or try more troubleshooting please post. Maybe we can at least pin the issue down so we can submit a bug report.

I went back to stock launcher on my Nexus 7 and still had the issue. Everytime I have to unlock my phone because my buttons are not working the lock screen controls were not there. I never thought of that. I will start to look at my lock screen more when I do the controls to be sure it is always there when the controls work.

I run into the lock screen controls being gone a lot too when watching something on Chromecast. Annoying, but nowhere near as bad as with my headphones. I have a friend with an HTC One that uses the same headphones as me, and he said that this does not happen to him. So maybe it is a certain combo of apps I have since I have the issue on both my Nexus and Moto X.

Well, as it turns out my GS III headphones stopped working all together so that could have bee a contributing factor.

I still have the issue of the the music art and controls not showing up on the lockscreen though.

Will troubleshoot farther with Bluetooth untill I get another pair of Android headphones.

OK that was quick. The refresh screen not being there means nothing. I was still able to use the media controls on my headphones when no controls were there.

So with some testing today i was able to see that I'm not affected by Bluetooth at all. Bluetooth controls seem to work for me at all times, even when the lockscreen controls are missing.

As another troubleshooting step, here is a list of all of my currently installed apps. Maybe you could list the ones we have in common. This list doesn't take into account the default google apps that come on the Nexus 5. I used an app called List My Apps and sent the results to Keep to get the list.

Here you go but I have had this issue before most of this was installed. I use my phone to listen to music, books, and podcast all day at work. At first I had Dogcatcher then went to pocketcast. I have always had this issue. What headphones do you have anyways? You say you are not having trouble with bluetooth so you have wired headphones? The times I have used wired headphones which is not a lot. I did not have this issue. I only use them when listening to a good book and my LG Tones die on me.

So to clarify, I was using my Bluetooth player and I DO NOT have control of my phone when the controls are not present on the lockscreen. Sorry bout that.

The headphones I use are Samsung headphones made for the SG3/4. The pair I had broke (buttons no longer work, tested on a couple of android devices) and I will get new ones in the mail today. Honestly I was hoping it was the bad headphones sending some bad signals and messing the controls up, but I have rebooted and stopped using them but still have the issue.

The only apps that could really be in common are MX Player and Netflix, but neither of those have lockscreen controls...so not sure where we can go from there.

This is soo frustrating!! I use my phone all day to for music, podcasts, and audio books and have to stop the audio a lot to talk to others. Having to unlock to both pause and replay is extremely frustrating, especially when you have a book playing and can't just take the headphones out and let it play while you talk.

My next step will be to do a factory wipe and cleanly install all my apps, but I need the better part of a day to do this, so maybe this weekend if i get fed up enough. I initially used Titanium to transfer all my apps from my GS3. I had this problem at one time on my GS3, but an update from Cyanogenmod fixed it. Wish I new what the problem actually was.

Here is something to try. I cleared my cache and rebooted and it seems to be working right for a little while. Its only been about .5 hours, so could be a fluke, but I've been sitting here locking and unlocking trying to make it go away and cant. Sent myself some texts, as that usually seems to also coincide with it going away as well.

To clear go to Settings--> Storage--> tap Cache and press okay to clear. This wont clear any saved files or anything. Then reboot.

If its this easy I'll smack myself, but I'm not holding my breath. On a custom ROM I would have done this already, but I've never cleared teh cache in the OS its self.

Good Luck!!

I have lock screen controls on my Netflix app when using Chromecast.

I cleared the cash but I know I have done that before. I generally do this before I update the OS.

I have the same issue at work. It really gets old having to unlock the phone to hit pause.

Alright, a little progress on the trouble shooting front. I seem to be able to reliably reproduce the problem.

I only have this problem if I have multiple audio programs open at once. For instance, if I only have Play Music open, I cannot reproduce the problem... I have lockscreen and button control functions at all times.

If I open another Audio Program like Doggcatcher or Pandora, I lose my lockcreen and button controls until I close one of the apps. I can repeat this over and over opening and closing different apps in different orders.

This tells me this is an Android issue. Android is not able to distinguish the running audio app against others still open in memory. When to apps are open that will request lockscreen and media controls, the OS doesn't know how to prioritize it. It should give access to the currently playing app, instead it just takes away the option instead of choosing.

Knowing this will fix the issue temporarily if you close one app before using the other. Not a fix, but at lease something I can do about it. Maybe I'll just clear all apps from memory every time I jump ausio apps.

If you get time please confirm this is the case with you. If so I can submit a bug report for Android...not that it'll get much attention with so few people having problems. I know this problem was fixed in the past when I was on CM. Wish I could get ahold of them somehow and find out what they changed.

Aaaaaand...never mind. Its back to being random. I won't be doing any more troubleshooting until I wipe and reload.

If that doesn't fix it I'll go back to CM 11. It'll be a shame to have gotten a Nexus 5 just to have to put a ROM on it to overcome a problem...that's why I sprung up front for a Google device, to not have problems. Really disappointed that this problem exists!

Okay, my problem is solved. After a complete wipe and clean install the media control issues is gone for me. I wiped and installed all apps from scratch, only restoring from a backup for 1 app.

I can switch audio apps at will and never lose my lockscreen controls. And my headphone and Bluetooth buttons work at all times. Even hours after I've played anything and no audio is currently being played or controls are on the lockscreen, it'll play the last thing played like it should.

I would guess that like me, a full reload of your OS and clean install of all apps may be worth the time to have your media functions back. I suspect my issue as some setting that came from restoring my apps from my old phone.

Good Luck.

Joined this forum just because I have been having the same problem(s). Fills me with sweet rage.

The difference is that I am using a Sony Xperia Z1.

This issue started months ago for me, after having the phone for a couple months.

Don't think it's specific to the phone or headphones. I have seen this problem with the stock firmware and now with Cyangenmod. Also used cheapo basic wired with a play/pause button, and Jaybird 3s and Bluebird Xs. Same idea - random working of the play/pause.

The common thread is we all seem to be audiobook/podcast listeners. I have used (and uninstalled/reinstalled) BeyondPod, DoggCatcher and Pocket Casts. All seem to be the same. Also Audible has been a constant. Rarely used any of the music apps but seen them randomly fire instead.

Anyone else on the internets finding the same issue and stumbling across this? Any ideas?

I can't say I have any other ideas than my last post. I put way too much time into troubleshooting this last time and in the end just restored to factory and started over. The catch was, I had to install my apps from scratch and not restore them from a third party backup app like Titanium. Something, in one of my apps, was causing this issue, so when I would reload, but use Titanium to restore my apps, I would have the same issue again.

I haven't had this issue since my last post in June...and I'm on Lollipop now, so hope to never see it again.

Good luck!

I did a factory reset and don't have this issue anymore. Sometimes it won't start when I pause for a really long time but I had that issue with my iPhone too.
