Pen virgin question - Is the only way to get it out is to press in on the pen?

The only way to get the pen out is to press in on the pen base in the phone so it pops out, right? There's no secret release button elsewhere?

I ask because I have a relatively basic, thick TPU case on. I really have to squeeze my finger/nail in there to get it out of the hole. Sticking it back in the hole requires a little extra effort too.

I wonder if this is just a thing with a lot of cases?

(this is just ripe for a lot of dirty innuendoes)

Yelp that is the only one to get spen out. Might look in getting a different case if you having issues.

Yes, that is the only way that I know of. Now, if Bixby could eject it by me saying, "Hi Bixby, eject the pen..." I might actually find some use for it! You need a better case. Most cases take into account the need to be able to access the pen. I have the Spigen Tough Armor case and it's great. I have no problem getting the pen out but I also have average sized hands as well. But they definitely put some thought into being able to access this area.

If you're really into the case you have and like everything about it except the S-pen access, just trim around the opening with an Exacto knife (with the case off the phone) to make it easier to get the pen out.

You can technically stick the pen in and leave the clicker alone. It doesn't do anything but make the pen sit flush with the housing. Sometimes I fidget with the clicker on the s pen when reading. Though I know I should be a little more careful with it as I don't know how durable the clicker is...

I have a Spigen crystal clear case on my Note 8 and have a little trouble getting my S Pen out with the case on. Also I do have to depress the button for it to be released. And I get no notification of an alarm if I leave the pen behind. But I am not going to do a reset to try to fix it.

I had a case I liked, a Gpel Pure Max, and I stopped using it because getting the pen out was driving me crazy, it was just so difficult. Got a couple other cases and it's no problem, so it is definitely possible your case is making it harder than it needs to be.

I want to comment. But I don't want to get another warning...lol

There is a thread elsewhere about a person whose s-pen pops out every time they drop the phone.

You could go that route, but I don't recommend it.

Not very! I've broken a few of my Note 5 & 7 pens that way. I'm a HUGE fidgeter, and while reading or watching something & absent mindedly clicking away, I've shot the top half (third? quarter?) of several pens across the room.

Several have broken, others just went flying. I have crazy glued them back together & they still usually worked, but I've never gotten them to seal as tightly, so they would stick out of the phone an annoyingly tiny bit.
