Pentile Screen Opinion/Topic

This is one high temp subject and I'm glad everyone is keeping civil. We all agree to disagree correct.

I don't know whats going on but every time I read a Pentile complaint and grab my buddies Atrix I cannot get it to show as described.
Being a semi pro photographer, Photoshop user, and maintaining calibration on three 21" S-PVA displays, I should be one to really rip into a problem display.

Now, I am not using magnification either. If one can see the samples posted above under normal magnification he is cursed or blessed with some amazing kind of vision capabilities.

For one to complain that colored font is illegible, gosh, all I can say I'm glad its legible to me.

I just want to get that Bionic in my hands and see.

It is really obvious to me on the x2 battery icon. I am going to a store to play with it even more tonight and try to get a feel as to what I see. But some can't see it regardless. So my opinion stands. Of course it's my eyes not anyone else's. Sometimes it is better to not have great vision lol.

I'm not entirely convinced by this comparison. The pic of the Droid X is out of focus in center and right, giving it a slightly blurred (= smoother) appearance, compared to the Atrix which is all hard focus. Also they have different backgrounds and appear to have been taken at different distances -- a closer view of a grainy screen will look even grainier.

While I can't say for sure, I think the comparison exaggerates the flaws in Pentile while minimizing the TFT's.

Both of these pics were takin with a camera resting on top of a pill bottle, they are the exact same distance.. the Atrix shows smaller text because the resolution is greater. The Dx is not blurry, it's smoother because the DroidX screen is simply better quality in regards to this conversation.

If it apeases you, I will make the background on the Atrix the same. It really is not going to matter, colored text is highly pixelated. Neither of these images are zoomed in.

Droid X on the left, Atrix on the right. This is acceptable?

Black text on white BG, and white text on black BG look fine.. it's colored text on any BG that you see very bad pixelation.

No, this is completely unacceptable! Those lines that are showing up on the DX are ridiculously irritating :p

Sorry sniffs, but we already know that if you take a magnified picture of the pentile display it will look a bit rugged. The issue is how does it look under real world use, and unless you plan on always looking at your phone through a macro lens, I don't see what these photos prove.

Your argument insinuates that everyone that looks at these phones does so through a camera.. I can see this pixelation as clear as day using the device in normal real world use, and so can MANY others. You aren't saying you have to be old and blind to not see this.... are you?

How else do you want me to prove the technology is a step backwards in regards to picture quality? drive to your house and show you? Want me to read your horoscope while I'm there?

Why have I given proof in 2 examples that it's inferior and you've not given any? Please, I would like some of your examples.

Thanks.

All I'm saying is that we've all seen the magnified pictures ad nauseam and we already know that magnified pictures make pentile look bad. I'm not even saying that people don't see anything wrong with them, because obviously there are people who find fault with the technology. You say its inferior, I disagree. What looks inferior to you look superior to me. Its all personal preference. You are showing what we have already seen and thus have brought nothing new to the discussion.

So if you like pixelation, Doom 1 was superior to Doom 3? :P

I only see pixelation on the magnified pictures. you don't seem to be understanding that. Not everyone sees pixelation if its not magnified.

I understand that, .. most people I know use the device at least 8"-12" from their face where pixelation is very evident. Young and old, glasses and no glasses.

I've shown almost every person in my IT department the Atrix and my DroidX and only 1 person was not able to see the independant pixels, and he was 58 years old.

It's also not solely about pixelation, skin tones and shading are "off". I wish everyone was like you, where they don't notice this, that way there wouldn't even be a topic such as this.. but when noted journilists from Ars Technica, Boy Genius, Engadget, Wired and other huge syndications comment on it in a negative way, I wouldn't want to be the sole person arguing for it in a mob with pitchforks.

I don't think its bad that people say negative things about it. It drives manufacturers to create displays that are even better that can have better battery life and not have the issues some people see. I just believe that people's opinions-good or bad-should be presented as opinions, not fact. I think people should be encouraged to go look at the display themselves instead of relying on pictures on the internet that highlight the flaws in ways that don't necessarily relate to how some people will use the phone.

The simple truth is that some people are going to see (look for) discrepancies in the screen, and others (probably most others) wont. If you don't like the way it looks (after it comes out and you see the actual Bionic screen), buy a different phone. Some folks just love to find fault...give them free gasoline and they'll start complaining about have to pump it themselves.

That's an unfair observation greg. I can tell you that I did not go out looking for any issues with the screen. I was actually very ignorant of the tech behind it to be perfectly honest. What brought it to my attention was upon first using/testing out the Atrix. I noticed it right away on the battery and really thought nothing of it. Just thought it looked weird. Then as I began to use it more (surfing, running lwp etc etc) and taking it through its paces I began to really notice it. Now I will admit this lol, after I began noticing it I held it up close to my eyes to really get a good look hahahahaha yeah I'm guilty but it struck me as odd. I believe my words were "what the heck is that" but I used a little more colorful word :)

So after I noticed it I couldn't stop noticing it. Next day or so I went digging around for info on the qHD and lo and behold I learned that this was common for the screen and others had issue with it as well. I decided right then and there I couldn't handle owning a handset with this screen. I read too much on my phone and there would be no way I could handle looking at that screen everyday.

So I wasn't looking for anything. I wanted to see how the Atrix performed because I was interested in the Bionic and they were close cousins at the time (this was before it was scrapped)

Well, if you take out the obvious smart elic slant to my previous post, I still say it's too early to start bashing the Bionic screen when we haven't seen it yet. Any smart phone purchase is a process of compromise, the winner being the device with the most pros and fewest cons. After having looked at few different pentile screens, I saw nothing negative about them. If anyone thinks it looks bad enough to outweigh the positives of the phone, then get something else. There are a bunch of great ones out there.

Unless moto throws a curve I don't see them going in another direction with the Bionic.

Point made and point understood though greg.

And conversely, I had read a lot about pentile screens and how awful they were. I looked at the Atrix, DX2 and D3 trying to see what everyone was complaining about and I saw nothing. I knew what to look for but just couldn't see it. I respect your opinion on pentiles because you are one of the few who states it as an opinion and encourages others to look at it for themselves, its the people who demonize it and try to poison everyone against it by stating it like its a fact that its an inferior screen that really bother me.
