Pentile Screen Opinion/Topic

Agree bluebiker and rkeller. Excellent points indeed.

Wasn't a backpeddle brownsfan I wasn't clear with my words and it happens more than I care to admit :)

I think they just need to get the pixel density up to a point that the Pentile 'shortcomings' are minimized or eliminated. There are many benefits to this technology for a mobile device.

I still say my ideal phone display is 1280x720 at 4.3 - 4.5 inches using Pentile RBGW.

I wonder though, would the increase in resolution counteract the benefit in power consumption provided by pentile? In essence, the main benefit would no longer be a benefit. So, would pentile even be a good solution at that point?

If it has nothing to do with the pentile then it may just be a driver/software issue. Will it be on the Bionic is anyones guess. Its present on their handset so it a possibility.

I honestly have not looked into what's causing it or who or what's to blame. Where did you hear or read it wasn't a pentile issue?

over at howard forums pentile thread someone said it's not penyile that causes ghosting. I don't remember where but i remember a write back someone got a hands on with the bionic and they said there was noticeably less ghosting.

That may have been the thread that ended up as the dinara though XD

With displays the major consumer of power is the backlight. For LCD displays there is a single backlight For the entire display. I would not expect a major difference in power consumption on an LCD display based on it's resolution.

Backpedaling is allowed. I'll be doing plenty of it as I eat my crow pretty soon.

I stopped in Verizon as well to check out both the Droid X2 and the Droid 3 screens. They both look perfectly fine to me. Crisp. Can't nitpick every damn thing. Bring on the Bionic.

Ah ... wasn't thinking about what would happen with LCD as well. Doh! The higher resolution would mean more power consumption, but would be so with any display technology.

And conversely, I had read a lot about pentile screens and how awful they were. I looked at the Atrix, DX2 and D3 trying to see what everyone was complaining about and I saw nothing. I knew what to look for but just couldn't see it. I respect your opinion on pentiles because you are one of the few who states it as an opinion and encourages others to look at it for themselves, its the people who demonize it and try to poison everyone against it by stating it like its a fact that its an inferior screen that really bother me.

tdizzel, it is my opinion that I feel Motorola's Pentile LCD technology is inferior. I've given 2 examples that in my eyes, show for a fact that pixelation occurs at any distance from your face. If you can't see that the green battery icon's pixels are hexed, more power to you.. to me, at 20/15 vision, I see it.

I get it though.. most people spend their hard earned money on these devices, they will defend them until the death of the device because it's *their* money. Heck, if I spent my hard earned money on something, I would say it's the best since sliced bread. You may not do this, but I guarantee alot of people do.

Fortunately for me, I work at a company where tech is constantly being thrown at me, I have had almost every Android phone AT&T/Verizon offers, including unreleased products. When I hold up one of the best phones ever made, the OG Droid against the Atrix, it's black and white for me. I came from an iPhone 4 where screen quality is a complete non factor, so to see this type of tech being put in "upgraded" phones, again, in my opinion, it's going backwards a few steps.

Is it different? yes.. do I like it? no.

Had Pentile come out first, I would have thought it was good.. until I saw RGB Stripe.

I see you've had the OG Droid, can you honestly tell me you see no difference in pixel arrangement from your Droid to any other Moto Pentile display?

Keep in mind, all my negativity is towards Motorola's Pentile design.. I've had the HTC Incredible and it's screen did not bother me at all, infact I thought it produced massively better colors than anything out.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is. You've already stated several times that you don't like the moto pentiles. So in your opinion its a fact-I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean to me. To you with 20/15 vision you see things that make it bad, to me with 20/15 vision it looks gorgeous.
Does the fact that you get to see a lot of different tech make your opinion any more or less valuable than anyone else's? I don't get the point of mentioning that.
And you "get it?" Please tell me, exactly how many people have spent money on the Bionic and its pentile screen? I can answer that. its exactly zero. Most of the people who are posting here that they like pentile screens are ones who have gone and taken a look at it, not people who have spent money on it. And I am neither rich enough or foolish enough to spend $300 just to prove something to someone on the internet.
Yes, I still have my OG Droid. Its screen is beautiful. Did I put my Droid right next to the pentile phones and compare. no. Do I need to do that to think that the pentile is gorgeous? No. Once I get the bionic i'm not gonna be pulling out my OG droid everytime I use it and compare, so what's the point? Pentile to me is gorgeous and that's all that matters to me.
You keep saying that it is your opinion that pentile is inferior, and you're entitled to your opinion and i respect that, but your post makes it seem like you think your opinion is superior to others' opinions and that's kind of insulting.

I'm really glad I checked out an Atrix today, the pentile display is not an issue to me at all and the phone ran perfectly fine with Blur. I even tried the grass live wallpaper, yes I could see a few pixels but I had to really focus on a point on the screen. The two biggest things I've heard about Motorola phones are not a big deal to me :).

Good Ole AnandTech, always one of the best in dissecting. I have been a registered member since 07.
I cannot wait until they get a Bionic.

AnandTech does great in depth reviews. They actually said good things about the D3 and DX2's pentile screens too.

What I can say about the Droid 3 is that from time to time I can notice the pentile effect, but overall I am surprised by how much more I am using my phone while outside. It used to be that I wouldn?t bother, but now I can actually see the screen and use it with sunglasses on.

I?m happy with the pentile screen on the D3.
