Pentile screen?

I was going to add that perhaps it is because I am seeing it with young, fresh eyes, that I am noticing the checkerboard texture on everything, but I was not sure if that was the case so I tested that theory. I showed it to my nearly 60 year old mother, and even with her old eyes (one which has a cataract developing) she remarked "It looks like lots of little dots everywhere, like an old timey newspaper printing."

Also for those of you not seeing it, have you tried setting it to max brightness? That really seems to bring out the pentile grid. Also, how far away do you hold your phone from your eyes? For me I generally keep the phone about 9 inches away when in normal use.

Your 60-year-old mother said "old-timey"?

Yes, yes she did.

Here is what the screen should look like:

Here is what the screen does look like (due to Pentile display):

My rendition of Pentile vs NonPentile display (as close to the effect as I could get, to my eyes, almost the exact same).

So, let's hear from you folks that have it. Is this an accurate representation? This is something that is keeping me from buying this device. And to me, that looks representation looks bad.

Thanks-

Meh. Load of crap. The regular screen doesn't exhibit that effect. Pics/videos show it a lot more to me.

I've had the phone since yesterday and at first I was like this is cap, but I've gotten use to it, at least it's not riddled with problems like my last 5 evo3d's, yes 5 of them
Thanks-

This is a deal breaker for me..... Sorry Pentile screen, I will not buy the Photon. Will get the Galaxy S 2

Ok I just swapped my Evo 3D out for the Photon 4G.. Upon booting it and getting to my home screen I immediately noticed the graininess of the pentile screen!!! its driving me crazy! I think I can get used to it so im going to give it a while and see what happens

What you need to do is to look at a photo or video with subtle shades of the same color. Something like fog or smoke will show it well, and you'll get muddiness (lack of detail) in shadows. This comes from an inadequate colorspace and perhaps attempts to dither to represent other shades.

They put the memory in the wrong place on this thing. They should have devoted it to video, rather than giving us extra useless storage space that is unusable for installing apps.

Why is it made like that?? It has the same screen as the e3d but that screen looks awesome!

They are absolutely NOT the same screen. They may be the same size and resolution, but the way they render is completely different.

I agree. I do not like the Pentile screens at all. I can notice it when I am doing almost anything. I am just looking forward to a qHD Super Amoled. I think that will be my next phone. But I would return it if it bothers you. People pay good money for cell phones and plans. Better be 100% happy with purchase in my opinion. And these OEM's need to spend more time on quality instead of quanity!

its because motorola pentile screens only light 2 out of every tree pixels i believe its for battery reasons

Some peoples eyes are more sensitive to different kind of effects. To the guys who say the screens look horrible...did you have the screen door effect when looking at older DLP televisions with the color wheel? They looked great to the vast majority of people but there was that small number of people who couldn't watch them. Everyones eyes are not the same and see things differently. Just a thought.....and it might not be a very good one at that..:p

Can you take a picture of the same image?

I have 3 motorola phones with the pentile screen: Motorola Atrix 4G, Droid X2 and the Droid 3. I also have an HTC Evo 3d, HTC sensation and a Samsung Galaxy S2. The only screen that is clearly better is the Samsung screen. I watch netflix on the Motorola phones with absolutely no complaints about the displays. I really think this is more of a personal taste issue than anything else. My favorite phone of all the above mentioned phones is the Droid 3. I absolutely love using this phone and it has the best keyboard to date of any Android phone that has been released thus far.:)

Having used my Photon for about 24 hours I really don't notice any issues with the screen resolution. It's a phone after all and I'm not trying to edit individual pixels in Photoshop on it. The features of this phone are awesome. If you don't like the screen, don't buy it but good luck getting a dual core world phone on Sprint :) Pick a phone for the features that are important for you

I went with the Inc2 over the X2 almost entirely due to the screen on the X2. It drove me nuts looking at it, while others say it looks fine.

First post but I've lurked on occasion looking for phone info. Currently on a Hero and been looking for an upgrade.

I was at the Sprint store yesterday and they have the Photon next to the Nexus S. I have to agree with Beyondinferno. The screen did not fare well, especially when sitting next to the Nexus s (20/25 in both eyes btw) I saw the weird blurry, stuttering when scrolling and that alone was a deal breaker. I played with it side by side to the Nexus S and it didn't feel that much snappier. I was poised to walk out with one but think I'll wait for the Within.
Doesn't the Nexus S also use a Pentile display?

I believe so, but not all pentile screens are made alike. My pentile amoled DINC doesn't bother me one bit, but I can not handle looking at the d3, dx2, or photon screens.

Screen door effect was more the LCD projectors for me. The DLP gave the rainbow headaches and 3D gives me a massive headache as well and I didn't like the Photon screen. What REALLY bugged me was the stuttering, flashing or whatever you want to call it when scrolling.
