Pixel 2 Trade-In Nightmare - Buyers Beware!!!

I was pro Swappa until recently but I suppose it's just bad luck. Sold a phone, then nearly 3 months later a claim was filed that I sold them something that was broken. They claimed a sensor wasn't functioning. It was functioning 100% when I sold it but PayPal sided with them and I had to refund the money, after losing 3 months of value, and getting a phone that didn't work 100%. I guess this is on PayPal but I'm scared to use it now.

Yeah that sounds more of a PayPal thing so even if you sold it on eBay or whatever it sounds like the same outcome would have happened.

Well that sucks. Will make me think twice about selling things in the future.

I have sold 3 phones to itsworthmore . com - I give them an honest appraisal and they send me a check in a timely manner.

I might get more on Swappa, eBay, or ??? - I am interested in getting some $$s and NO aggravation. They have met this requirement.

There is certainly something to say for "NO aggravation" selling, but they are only offering $282 for a Pixel XL/128 in flawless condition with original box, charger, and cable. Sorry, but that is a very lousy deal - I sold mine on swappa for $500+.

I won't argue with the $$s difference - just posted another option for people to explore.

(If I was shrinking my wife's top in the laundry I'd need the extra $$s to replace it - :D )

Lol. Not sure which was worse - shrinking her favorite top or the time that a new red something or other went in with a bunch of lighter items and everything came out pink. :)

Craigslist all the way from me. Buying or selling. Stop on to a Verizon store, get it working, and we're both on our way.

Thanks for the "heads up" - something to consider in the future. Wonder if Verizon does any better with their plan.

I traded in a Pixel XL, silver, 128 gb to Verizon for the Note 8, having gotten the Pixel when my two Note 7s got recalled. It was in perfect condition. They originally quoted that 260.00 for it, but had a promotion--I'm not sure if it was just for Note 7 owners or not--but the point is, they said because of the promotion, they'd give me 480.00 for it. It had to be paid off (it was.) and it wasn't a lump sum, it takes 20.00 a month off your payments to them for the 24 months of the payment plan. They told me it would take two months to go into effect. It took one. So the point here is, I found in this instance and in an earlier instance with Verizon, that they do honor whatever agreement they have made with you.

I loathe Paypal, have had several problems with them that were totally bogus. One as a buyer, with an Ebay seller that never delivered the item, and both Ebay and Paypal did nothing about it. And once buying an item from a merchant who wasn't at fault, but Paypal for reasons they didn't explain gave the seller my old address when they had my new one clearly on their site, and then claimed somehow I had sent them the old address. I have tried hard not to use them since.

Any updates?

I am in a similar situation, if not worse.

So yeah I ate the bait when they called me #pixelteam . I sent my old pixel using their envelope thinking that this is google and they must know what they're doing. I shipped it 10 days ago and still nothing. The tracking number shows "out for delivery" on 10/25, but was never delivered or evaluated!

On top of that, the Pixel-2 I got seems to be a DEFECT! If the battery dies and it powers off it doesn't charge or turn on anymore. Each time that happens I have to press power and volume down till I get into bootloader, turn it off, then turn on again (Google tech support directions). They already sent me a replacement. But I am worried about my old phone since honestly I am very disappointed in the trade in process, Pixel-2, and Google as a whole these days.

I had the same problem. I sent in my excellent condition 128gb pixel xl, was quoted $410. They sent me an email saying I'm only receiving $162 because the phone wasn't factory reset. I made sure to factory reset it as I'm paranoid when it comes to my personal information getting out. After countless back and forth bs, the best they could do me was offer a $35 store credit.... 😡

I’m actually on the phone with them again right now as I type. This is now the third call and no answer yet. They said it was escalated, but their follow up on this situation is horrible. Not a good business practice to leave your customers hanging.

I’m sorry to hear about your problem. Those trade in envelopes were ridiculous! How do phones not get lost or trashed shipping them back in those? I’ll be using Swappa next time after this thread blew up with happy users of that service.

I’ll definitely report back on the outcome of this as soon as I know. Hopefully it will be after this call, but I doubt it.

Just got off the phone and still nothing is resolved. It’s been escalated and some one will call or email me back in 24 - 72 hours. Now I wait...again.

I appreciate all the information, as I was contemplating trading my Pixel XL for credit as well. I ultimately decided a couple weeks ago to keep it, as I still like using it and it's a good backup to have, since I decided not to get insurance on my Pixel 2 XL.

Google's customer service can be difficult to deal with when problems arise and I am sure, as someone else stated, that these trade ins may be handled by a 3rd Party agency.

With that said, I had a similar issue arise, when I traded a Sprint phone into Verizon for credit.
Verizon was offering a much higher amount than what I could've gotten from trying to resell it myself.

I was quoted $275 and when they received my phone, I got an email saying that the actual value of the device was $0.00, and they do not return the device. I was concerned, but, lucky for me, it only took one phone call and 2 representatives to get the original credit issued.

I have nothing but sympathy for the person that was quoted $410 for their Pixel XL and received less than $200.

I like Google, but their customer service definitely has room for improvement.

Anyone have a good experience with the trade in? My phone is in pretty bad shape and I'm worried I won't get the $400 promised.

The only criteria concerning the trade-in device they asked in preparing the quote are:

  • Make
  • Model
  • Storage
  • Carrier-designation
  • Does the phone turn on
  • Does the screen work properly and is free of cracks
  • Can you factory reset the phone before shipping

If you are accurate in answering those, there should be no room for major diminution of the quoted price unless there is something else horribly off concerning the device's functionality, such as major functionality issues (cracks in the body / seams, volume buttons/headphone jack/speakers non-functional, etc).

If there's just a lot of wear such as 'finish' issues and light scratching on the display, you might expect something on the order of a 10-15% drop. A cracked rear glass on last year's Pixels might dock a bit, but shouldn't be too drastic as that's cosmetic.

The 3rd party doing this is going to look for anything they can to reduce what they have to pay, and it wouldn't surprise me if their reps reviewing the quotes are compensated for hitting a quota on how much they are able to reduce those offers... They're also going to figure most people would be more likely to accept a modest drop than to just take the phone back (which is in your rights).

Mine is showing as received by tracking (was in a sleeve, in bubble wrap, in a heavy duty shipping box), works perfectly, and would be almost indistinguishable from new (in case with screen protector from day 1) so I'm anticipating 100% of the offer extended to me. If it comes in lower, I'll just require them to ship it back to me and I'll sell it out on Swappa.

That's what I was thinking, I've had a wrap on the back since buying it so I'm good there. There is a ton of discoloration and silver scratches around the front edge and corners. The screen also has a good amount of scratches. We will see!
