Pixel 2 XL Screen Discussion

FedEx just delivered my 2XL an hour ago, and honestly I like the screen more than my 7 Plus next to it. If it wasn't for these forums, I wouldn't even think twice about the screen. This phone rocks!!

I love this phone battery life is amazing, so smooth and buttery even after all my apps are loaded and synching. It's amazing!

Not trying to be rude. But people showing comment these type of things until they buy an 2XL and use it for a bit. This is not a slight issue when viewed at extreme angles.

In day to day use you will see the display color temperature change a lot.

For example i lay my phone on the table and frequently turn it on to change the music playing or send a quick test. In this angle my phone looks very blueish if I move my face it gets more yellowish and then blue again.

Or even when maneuvering to click things higher up on the screen. I see the screen have waves of blue or yellowish whites depending on the angle. It's there and it is distracting. More importantly for a hefty priced "upgrade" to last year's pixel.. it shouldn't have a worse display PERIOD

Your not rude. If I notice blue tint in normal use after a few day it will go back. It sounds like your phone may be a dud though.

This is not correct. Glass substrate is bendable as well, but it is more difficult. The Android Authority article needs some backup to go along with their claim that Samsung is using plastic substrate for their panels, because Samsung was adding curves to their displays and was for sure bending glass substrate, if not still, until very recently. Whether they still do it is the real question, and if not, then they are years ahead of LG.

Anyway, my point was just that it is not correct that glass substrate cannot bend. Back to the regularly scheduled programming now of Pixel 2 XL display being bad :)

Edit: Forget my comment above. We can all learn something. Looks like it is not plastic substrate though...

I assume you are referring to this line: "Samsung's flexible OLEDs are produced using a polyimide substrate, an LTPS backplane and a direct-emission (side-by-side) pixel structure. The production process is too hot for the plastic substrate (it will melt) and so the polyimide substrate is supported on a glass cover which is later delaminated."

A polyimide substrate is still plastic, this is just simply saying that during the production process it is built on top of a glass cover to shield i from the extensive heat of the production process (at least that's what I'm taking from it, i dont claim to be a display panel manufacturing expert lol). they remove that shield after production, leaving the plastic there.

Any screen that has a curve to it (ie the S8 and Note8) uses a pOLED display, Samsung just groups them all in the AMOLED (their own naming convention) category. They do this because a plastic substrate is bendable, where a glass substrate is not.

Even most phones that dont have a curved display are using pOLED screens, mainly because they are cheaper to make and thinner than OLED screens with a glass substrate. You are getting confused because you had never seen pOLED used to describe the screen until now.

Good read. Thanks for sharing

I just spent some time at the Verizon store checking both out. The tint on the PXL2 is pretty terrible at the slightest of angles. From straight on, it looks like a good screen. Not as good as the P2, but good. In the world of the 4 Pixel(s) devices and the Nexus 6p (what I currently use) I think the PXL2 is the worst. I'm planning on ordering the Pixel 2. Personally, I can't handle the screen on the PXL2. Is it all overblown? No, I don't think so. I think it's a BIG deal to screen snobs and not a big deal to the average person. If it was just a little tint, it wouldn't be as big of a deal to me. But when you look at the Pixel 2 sideways, white is still white in the app drawer. It's big brother doesn't just look a little blue, it looks insanely blue and that is something that an update isn't going to fix. For an extra $200, I'm going to pass.

I'm not sure because of of the videos I see online show the issue just like mine. I might return this phone and get a new one just in case... To try with a second device. I'll give Google the benefit of the doubt but I'm so dissapointed in this whole situation. I don't get how the engineers didn't turn this on and were like there is something OFF with this screen.

Here is what the blue tint looks like on mine. But like I said doesn't bother me since I don't use my phone like that 99%of the time. //uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171019/8eb5fc68bb0d958fa4e25485a8f317c1.jpg
The funny thing is...WHO DOES use/hold their phone like that even NINE PERCENT of the time?! 🤣 🤣 I would loVe to be out in the "wild", and see people actually holding their device like you are in the photo. I'd make sure to have a blue can of paint, and a paintbrush...to SLAP people on the forehead as I see them using their phone at such a silly angle. #PickyPickySubjectives

(No. You're not one of those people. I understand you're one of the few, so far, attempting to bring users back to a realistic experience with their device.)

So I've been really trying to curb my phone cravings because it's costing me too much money. Thankfully all this display talk had helped prevent me from ordering the phone as of yet. But I still had to feed the cravings a bit and I paid a visit to the Verizon store to check out the Pixel 2 XL.

I didn't experience the banding that some people have. I did however get the blue hue on the screen. Now, while this might not be an issue to some extent because you're not viewing the phone at an extreme angle, I did see the blue hue with a slight tilt of the screen.

While some may adapt themselves to this slight, off white, cool hue I do agree with others in regards to it being unacceptable for a phone that is so expensive.

While checking out the camera I noticed this weird anomaly in the screen. At first I thought the source was the LED lights on the Google Pixel signage. Then I moved the phone around but the anomaly remained stationary on the screen. I then took a photo and the anomaly was in the photo as well. So it seemed to be the sensor.

Perhaps it's an isolated incident with this display model. While I really wanted to have a pure Google experience again and a great camera I think this visit killed it for me. I'll stick with my S8+ for a while until either something changes our Google intervenes.

Here's the video shot on my S8+.

I will be honest that I don't fully understand this whole thing. Some skimming through this website indicates that it perhaps contains a lot of useful information...

https://www.oled-info.com/tags/technical-research/substrate/glass

Apparently Samsung is going to use foldable glass in its upcoming foldable displays...ugh my head hurts

Anyway, we're off topic now somewhat. At the end of the day, whatever LG is doing is not nearly at the same level as what Samsung is doing, perhaps even beyond process and right down to the materials and substrate.

Here is something that is on-topic https://www.oled-info.com/disappointing-reviews-lgs-new-p-oled-smartphones-displays and one more piece that is relevant to the topic https://www.oled-info.com/lgd-still...d-line-will-not-start-mass-production-least-6.

Nice, limited time now but I'll be checking those links out later for sure

I'm sorry but it's not a joke. You don't have to put most devices at that angle to see it...
You will see the blue tint. If you don't mind it that's fine. But it's a weird display issue that should NOT be there. Let's not sugar coat it.

I had the Galaxy S3 and never had any issues like this ..

What I mean is that during normal reasonable use you get the change in display temperature. And it's somewhat annoying.

I'm not finding the screen issue(s) to be a joke...at least not as much as I find my idea funny!! #WhereIsMyBluePaint

My two cents.

Haven't seen it in person, but coming from a Note 5, I think anything will be an improvement.
I realize in my old age (34) I need my phone to do different things.

I need battery life (maybe muted colors will help).
I need something without crap, that flys (the Note 5 is barely keeping up). Need pure Android - fast processor.
I dont really care about wireless charging (I still plug in for fast-charging, wireless is too wonky with a case).
Use it to play the occasional game, listen to music, and youtube - I use the TabS2 and Acer Chromebook for movies, reading, etc...

So I doubt the slight screen issues that seem to be very user opinionated will sway me away. I have a feeling this thing is going to blow my mind compared to the Note 5.

Thoughts?

OG Pixel XL?

I've had the 2 XL for 1 day, and I love it! It boots up very, very fast. What an improvement over my 6P, which took 2 minutes or more before all my email and messages finally synced up. And the screen is great! I don't have a recent Samsung to compare it to, but it blows away the screen on my 6P. Sorry, but I couldn't possibly care less about the blue tint at an angle. I look at phones straight on, so for me, it's a non-issue. I like the eSim, I was able to get up and running very quickly (I was already using Project Fi on my 6P). The apps transferred via cable from my 6P with no problems, except the Amazon app store and Amazon apps did not come over. Once I installed the Amazon app store, it all synced up in minutes. I did have trouble pairing my Garmin fitness watch, but it was my fault because it can only be paired with one device at a time, and I hadn't un-paired it from the 6P. Overall, the 2 XL is fast as hell, and I am loving it.

EhhhXceLLeNT *in my Mr. Burns voice*

I'm currently on a Nexus 6P using Project Fi as well. I cannot wait [till November 30th] to experience the Storm Trooper on Project Fi via eSIM, and see how the screen and experience is

When I was comparing my 2XL to 7 Plus, I noticed that there is a slight yellow shift when you are looking at it from below. In my one year of ownership, I've never even noticed it. I wonder how many people, if the blue shift wasn't pointed out to them, would've never thought about it, but now are totally fixated on it.

I'm having a hard time understanding how can something as minor as this get somebody worked up so much as to return the phone. This is such a fantastic device, and to dismiss everything else because there is some color temperature shift when not using the phone at a normal angle?

Enough with this......Here's a comparison of the Galaxy S8 on the left and the XL2. The reviewer relates the difference to the sRGB profile of the XL.

I'm an old man, 60+, so my needs and tastes are likely different than you young'uns.

No question, the chrome icon is infinitely richer and more vibrant on the S8. But honestly, I outgrew cartoons a loooooong time ago. And that's what the S8 looks like to me. CGI-ish

If this calibration carries over into normal viewing, whether news photos or videos, I suspect I'll be HAPPIER than I would with the S8.

Now, I do have an XL 1st gen. If the screen isn't as pleasing to THAT phone, back the 2 will go........
