Pixel 2 XL Screen Discussion

It's more than just the tint. To my eye, the colors are not quite as pleasant. Even the Verizon people could see the difference between the 6p, Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2. Of course, these people were also told by their Google Rep that HTC makes both devices.

When I was comparing my 2XL to 7 Plus, I noticed that there is a slight yellow shift when you are looking at it from below. In my one year of ownership, I've never even noticed it. I wonder how many people, if the blue shift wasn't pointed out to them, would've never thought about it, but now are totally fixated on it.

I'm having a hard time understanding how can something as minor as this get somebody worked up so much as to return the phone. This is such a fantastic device, and to dismiss everything else because there is some color temperature shift when not using the phone at a normal angle?

I was one of the first people to report this issue and was in no way aware of it through forums. Trust me, if you have used any recent high end phone you will notice it regardless of knowing beforehand. The first thing I noticed when I saw the phone was that something was off about the screen. I've never had that type of first impression on any other phone.

I'm sure you'll love the 2 XL. My 6P was barely getting 6 hours on a charge, so my new 2 XL couldn't get here fast enough! It will be so much nicer not to have to plug the phone in to the car charger, and carry an Anker battery around with me anymore...

There's a difference between pleasant and accurate, and they're not always the same thing

I'm getting my 2 xl in a few days and, in the meantime, I've been reading everything I can about this danged #colorgate . Anyway, for about 4 years, I've been using a note4. I've always been perfectly happy with the screen. It never occurred to me (until now) what it would look like *tilted*, but sure enough, it gets a blue tint. Now that I'm suddenly aware of this intolerable situation... Well, it doesn't bother me one bit. If the 2 xl is even close, I'll be fine with it.

I just received confirmation that my XL2 has been delivered, so I'll see for myself soon enough. That said, what I find most perplexing about this whole thing is, the sheer number of reviews, from such a wide variety of sites, that didn't raise this as an issue at all. Many noted the display was flatter, but that it was a "very good" display. Even the Verge (whose Vlad Savov seems to be spearheading Screenmageddon) said of the screen in its full review, "I appreciate that it's not as oversaturated as your average OLED Android phone."

Given the sheer number of professional reviewers who didn't even notice this in their reviews, I have to imagine this is being overblown. Which is different than saying it's a non-issue. Once someone points something out to you, it's hard to un-see it.

In the end, if it bothers me I'll return it and get a Note 8. However, I suspect it's much to do about nothing.

I would say that they're rarely the same thing. Even laying out my work phone (iPhone 6s), Nexus 6p, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL, I just didn't like the Pixel 2 XL. Totally personal preference. On the flip side, I saved $100 and was able to pack 128GB into a Pixel 2.

People on this post are thinking this issue is just a less than the best oled panel. And the older Samsung phones had this issue etc..

Let me tell you, this is not the case I had a Galaxy S3 and the screen didn't have this issue.

You will notice the blue tint change during NORMAL use. You don't have to go looking for it.

I'm not saying it's a deal breaker for everyone. But people gotta stop pretending it's an issue that people are just making up. This is an issue and it shouldn't happen and IMO it is not a panel worthy of a $850 price tag....

The saturation stuff is more subjective. But still I don't get what Google was thinking when they picked this display

Ok, got my Pixel 2 XL today, the screen is perfect. A bit more muted than some other phones, but I like it, not as cartoonish.

I messed with a buddies today and don't think it'll bother me. I don't look at an angle.

This reminds me of the S8+ red screen fiasco before I got that phone. It released, an update came, and you literally hear no one talk about it anymore.

I don't think anyone is just making this stuff up, I'm just hoping it doesn't annoy me. If it does, I'll return it. However, lots of folks seem quite happy with their new 2xl. If it's even close to my n4 screen, I will be in the happy camp.

I think they were trying to avoid a supply issue after Samsung couldn't keep up with panel demand last time.

Does it make me weird that the whole time I was watching that video I couldn't stop thinking how nice that display looked? (I mean the 2 XL BTW...)

I guess maybe some people are born with a bone in their head that makes imperfections in display panels harder to accept.

And I don't mean that as an insult at all. We're all different, some people will obviously be more bothered about this than others.

I'm glad I'm not.

Got mine today and definitely won't be returning it, coming from a 6p. Glad I didn't cancel my pre-order. I wouldn't go by videos or what other people say, see it for yourself and then decide.

I definitely wish I wasn't affected by it. I was looking forward to the XL 2. For me, I have tried to ignore screen issues on devices in the past and it was not an enjoyable ownership experience. But, I'm looking forward to the Pixel 2 and I'm glad that Google gave us two devices that are extremely similar. No device is ever perfect, it's just deciding how much the imperfections are going to bug you.

ExZaaaaaactLy!!

I will be using my Nexus 6P for a little over a month longer...but I'm so ready for November 30th to be - the current Date!!

I stopped at the Verizon store. Major construction around the main entrance so not many people in store and I was able to spend some time with all the phones.

I noticed nearly every phone color shifts when tilted at an angle. The Galaxy S8s were the only phones in the store that seemed to have zero color shift. Well those and the Pixel 2.

The Pixel XL definitely has a blue tint when views at an angle. Straight on, the screen is beautiful, but tilt and whites turn a slight blue. I could not notice any issues when looking at non-white screens. One thing, with having the pixel 2 and XL 2 next to each other it really makes the XL color shift more noticeable.

Still compared to my 3 year old note, the screen is 10 times nicer so I think this will not bother me at all.

However, I can see why many might be turned off by a $1000 phone having any issue with the screen.

If you want by far the best phone screen on the market, get a Galaxy S8+ edge. The screen is 20 times nicer than my current Galaxy note. Wow, that is a good looking phone and screen.

So I am going to stick with the XL 2 for the software experience and maybe trade it in next year for a XL 3 when the screen is perfect - or go back to a Galaxy phone if pure android is not all that.

They both do. LG and Samsung LED displays are all AMOLED and they're all P-OLED.

But LG's P-OLED is terrible. Samsung's is amazingly beautiful. If Samsung would've put their displays in the Pixel 2 XL, it would've been a home run.
