Pixel 2 XL Screen Discussion

I actually "threatened" to cancel when chatting with the rep (no plans to cancel), was just curious what response I would get. Funny, I actually turned my note 5 color from adaptive to basic, was a little shocked at first, but now I actually really like it...and guess what...totally have a blue tint when holding at an angle, never noticed till I looked for it.

I am psyched to get the 2XL Penguin (from pittsburgh, refuse to call it a panda), I need speed, battery life and a solid camera...for work, pics of the kids, music, and the occasional game.

I thing this thing will blow me away.

Penguin, Panda... they're all stormtroopers to me.

Here's what makes me unsure of the proportion. I use this phone for over 2 months and didn't have any issues. No one else that I know that was testing the device had any issues. All of the reviewers that were on the hands on event did not report any issues. Then a few people have devices that they claim are bad and the media is running with it. Which is fine we see that all the time of course they're going to blow up The Sensational story. But we haven't actually seen any bad displays, unless that's changed today, I've been out of touch. And we also have a lot of other reviewers telling us that it's not anywhere near as bad as it's being said. And we also have some of the ones who said that they hated it admitting that they just hate the color profile because they are used to inaccurate displays. As an example artem turned srgb mode on on his old pixel and he hates that one just as much. So there's a lot of confusion about why exactly people think there's something wrong with it and there's a lot of confusion about how many of them actually have anything wrong with them or if anything is wrong with any of them. I've purchased two of these plus I've had my test device and I've seen several in stores. None of them have any issues other than the slightest blue tint at extreme angles. And that's the exact same slightest hint that we see on the S8 and Note 8 and the original pixel however those phones don't shift to Blue they are red and yellow respectively. So a very well could be that my perceptions just aren't as finely tuned to some other people's or it could be that a lot of people are blowing something up that doesn't really have a lot of teeth to it. And since I don't know which it actually is my recommendation is that each person actually look at it for themselves if they think it's going to be an issue.

Some people are just more color sensitive. It's kind of like silly debates over which devices have the best camera. Some think the iPhone shoots the best pics, some like the Pixel. Some like Samsung. A lot of it is subjective. What I do know is that for me, the blue tint on the device I looked at was WAY bad. For comparison, my Nexus 6p has a small shift and I couldn't tell a shift on the Pixel 2.

I have a wife and a toddler. We all love watching home videos. With 3 people watching on a device, everyone is viewing at some angle. For me, the tint made it unacceptable. I made the call that we would not enjoy the experience as much as the experience on a screen that didn't exhibit that kind of shift. Everyone's mileage varies and that's OK.

I said earlier that people make decisions emotionally then justify them rationally. That goes both ways (for liking or disliking a device).

I have never once seen her do a deep dive on smartphone displays. I've never once heard her mention the Delta e or talk about the measurements of the color accuracy at all. I honestly don't believe that she even owns the equipment to measure colors or brightness or really any of the metrics that we would measure display quality on. I do watch a lot of reviews. Does she have another Channel where she does measurement based reviews?

Well, she does, she just doesn't always show her measurements. She does in this Note 8 video. Skip to 16:20.

And also in her Pixel 2/XL display video she just released.

Makes perfect sense and I don't think anyone could fault you for this. Except for... we're probably about to meet someone who is going to tell you that you're holding it wrong.

Well here I am coming to eat crow. I just got my 2 XL and the display is definitely not as bad as I remembered it from the first time that I checked it out at Verizon. If I didn't know better, I'd say the one at Verizon had a bad display. Anyway... This display is good. I still prefer the Note 8, but I'm completely happy with the 2 XL.

Glad you like it. If anyone said it was better than the Note 8, I'd probably have them tested for rabies.

I don't care about the screen when I'm getting battery life like this. This phone is crazy good...

Thanks for that..

So everyone has a little grain right? Like on white backgrounds? Or is it just my phone?

I don't have a 2XL, but I do have a V30. I just went through every color in a display testing app, at lowest brightness and no blotch, no band, and color was consistent. I don't have a magic screen, so I can only assume there are some quality variations in the units sold. Maybe the eased some QC thresholds to make sure supply was high enough, I don't know. But whatever issues some are having aren't being seen by everyone. The blue shift is there, maybe 45 degrees off vertical... But seeing as I don't use my phone that way, I don't care.

If you see anything wrong with your phone, exchange it for another until you get one that doesn't. There's a lot of hot takes and hyperbole surrounding this right now and people have to chill.

There are a bunch of people in the volunteer staff here that got one and you know what? They all say the phone is awesome. Sure, LG can't match Samsung in terms of AMOLED quality at the moment, but so what... It isn't bad and the rest of the phone is stellar. I have yet to come across anyone I know personally who has the 2XL and are so riled up (or really even disappointed) they are returning it.

I just had a good look at an XL2 at a store here in aus. The screen looked fine. Hardly any blue shift at all. Maybe there's some unlucky ones out there.
