So is this sale desperate or realization that their Pixel is overpriced to begin with.
Imagine if Apple had this type of sale. It break records.
Have we seen the Verizon Black Friday sale yet? Last year they had $300 off. Granted that was via bill credits over 24 months, but it is still $300. That would make it better than this $200 off deal.

The market has a way of self-adjusting..... companies will push as far as they can to find the ceiling price wise, and the consumer will let them know when they hit it. Samsung and Apple have both found the ceilings..... they've both seen slowing sales over the last 2 years, with Apples best selling phone being the iPhone 8 because of it's 450-500 dollar price point, and I think maybe Google wanted to find their ceiling as well. I'm getting the impression the pixel 3's aren't selling as well as Google was hoping for, so why not get more pixels into people's hands for black Friday, more owners often mean more fans/buyers down the road ;-)
All I know is if I buy a Pixel 4 next year, I'm waiting until Black Friday. The trade in values this year we're down and the price of the new phone was up. Plus, the only perk offered at launch was a $50 store credit. I love my Pixel 3 XL. However, I'd be quite a bit happier if it had come with a Google Hub and a $50 credit.
If the deal had been where it is now at launch in terms of effective value, they'd probably have gained a lot more net upgrade sales when the 'upgrade fever' was at its height - I know I'd probably have gone ahead with it. With 4 weeks to settle, it's sparking my interest but I'm leaning towards holding off.
This definitely does set a precedent, though, that will put pressure on Google to do such a BF deal every year. With the knowledge that Google could have a much better deal at BF, just about a month after launch, a lot of people will resist the need for instant gratification in order to save some $, and will hold off for BF. Then, when they're anxious to finally get their new phone, if Google fails to offer a good BF deal, other OEM's handsets will be substantially more attractive at BF pricing, causing Google to lose out pretty heavily.
From what I'm seeing the deals aren't as good as last year's $300 off without having to trade in anything. That deal is what convinced my to buy my 2.
Google didn't run that directly last year, iirc. Was that a VZ or BB promo and not done as bill credits? If so, nice deal, but otherwise wasn't functionally valuable for many who don't want to be essentially locked to a carrier for a long term, or who didn't want to use VZ.
