The back of my old Essential phone was ceramic. Added a lot of weight and was like it was Teflon coated. But man it felt good in my hand.

My S10+ is ceramic and that feels so premium and lovely. One reason I will keep it till it dies.

Ah, the Essential Phone... I LOVED IT and wanted one so badly! It looked like such a beautiful and solid device -- both figuratively and literally, apparently! 🤣

Might be convinced to part with mine...

Yep that thing could be used as a weapon in a pinch lol.

Weight....that is another disadvantage glass backs adds to a phone...useless dead weight. The P6P has to be the heaviest of all the phones I've ever had. I can see the weight justified if it added usable functionality such as a bigger battery, larger or more cameras would. Glass backs add very little to the phone but weight and fragility.
Then there is 'hand feel". It might feel good in the hand which soon becomes irrelevant when almost immediately a protective case is snapped on both front and back. I read posts in which people wrote that they're not even taking the phone out of the box until the case arrives. I ordered a case immediately after my P6P did the "watermelon seed squirt" right off the arm of the couch within seconds of taking out of the box. Thankfully it landed on a soft rug.
Henry Ford would be proud..you can have any phone back material you want....as long as it's glass.

Make sure not to get a S22U it's approx. 19 grams heavier.:D

And don't forget the metal frame on the P6P, I wonder how much weight that added to the phone!

Glass will be used till the market says NO. Right now, people appear to like the glass backs on premium phones. If people stop purchasing premium phones and go back to the plastic frame/plastic back phones, glass might eventually be replaced with something like ceramic. I personally, like the glass and if ever needed, can still replace the battery or pay someone to do it. And prices aren't that bad for many battery replacements. I did some pixel 4Xl battery replacements, batteries were about 29 bucks, and quite easy to replace. Remove the back panel, a few connectors, some screws one (maybe two brackets) and then pop out the battery.

As for ceramic. Ceramic tends to be porous, therefore, under many applications ceramic has to be thicker, thus weighing the same as glass. But yes, it is it is a great material and would like to see more used on a phone.

Glass looks good in the store, but many people put on a case and never see that glass back. Kind of a ridiculous market where it is accepted that we have to buy additional accessories that hide the very thing the manufacturers used to attract us to the product. Of course, they will build what sells and "premium" won out over rugged.

You are so right about that! Even with my beautiful white, glass Honor 8 phone, I'd try to get transparent cases to still kind of "show off" the glass.

I agree, for my Pixel 4XL and the S22U (I have had and the one shipped yesterday) all have had clear TPU covers to show off the color (even if white). However, I can remember my LGs, Motorola Droids that were NOT glass, but plastic, I covered them too. But might seem strange but those were mostly enclosed in Otterbox or Spigen Heavy Duty cases. And the only phone I have destroyed was a Motorola Razr back around 2012-2013, in an Otterbox.
Not to knock Otterbox, it did fall close to 500 feed down the side of a rock wall outside of Moab Utah, and it wasn't the only thing broken. After retrieval, I drove to the hospital.

Several years ago my BlackBerry Key² fell out of one of my pockets in a parking lot. It wasn't in a case. When I realized it was gone I turned around and saw it behind a wheel of a big suv that was backing up. I stood paralyzed as I heard the death crunch. The phone was totally crushed, screen in hundreds of shards of glass. When I picked it up I noticed the plastic back was remarkably unscathed. If it had been a glass back it too would have been shattered and I would have been totally pissed.

I guess if everything was totally crushed, including the back glass it would not mean a thing to me since a totally crushed phone with a plastic back in good condition, means total replacement anyway. But I guess the back could be saved as a souvenir.

My Razr was totally replaced (or I was totally reimbursed by insurance to be exact) and I think the back was ok; not sure I gave a darn. However the screen was totally shattered so it was considered non-repairable, and I believe I replaced it with a Droid Turbo and moved on. Insurance is so great.

And I purchase a phone I like (want) regardless of the manufacturing materials since glass back or not, the screen is easy to break, unless is like the POLED screen I have on my Motorola Z-Force that was technically unbreakable. However, that had a fault too; it was easy to scratch since the "P" was for PLASTIC (similar to the Folding phones of today), and was the only phone I ever purchased where the manufacture suggest a screen protector.

However, I still have that phone, it still works but has been relegated to be a permanently plugged in clock in one of my spare bedrooms. But yes, first day, it had a glass screen protector installed.

Uh...my posted event was real. The last sentence was the punchline of the post.
Moab dry humor.

Wow! What a story! So glad you were okay after that fall!

Don't doubt it was real story, I guess I took it the wrong way...sorry.

Yes, Moab is dry.

But I actually, have no humor and I blame it on having worked for the Gov't too damn long.

Need to clear that up, I only feel about ten feet, the phone fell over 500 feet.
If I had fallen 500 feet, I would not be here now typing this.

The rim at the top to the right is where the phone fell over, on top of that rim are a set of rock steps (no photo). I fell from the top of the rock steps down about ten feet due to a vehicle, appearing to possibly tip over on top of me, so I jumped back and down I went. I had the phone in my hand, just holding it, and it was let go, over the cliff. Arm was broken in three places, but since we had no extra drivers to drive, I had to drive my vehicle back down the incline we had driven up and eventually make my way to Allen Memorial hospital (a dump they called a hospital in Moab before the new hospital opened).
(Trail; Lockhart Basin, is outside of Moab UT.)

Gorgeous photos -- but not the story of your fall! I figured you didn't fall that length but still, it's so lucky you were alright! You had to drive with a broken arm?! Oh no! What a story!

I still have the pure in a draw. I still put my sim in it from time to time for a day or two. :)

I just fired mine up the other day :p I was using it regularly to sync my Fitbit with... but the latest app needs Android 8 so I'll now be using my pixel 1 to sync with. I've been actively using my Pure for something since I bought it new in 2015... pretty good for ancient tech lol. Kinda sad though that it's now officially no longer going to be used for anything. It looks like brand new, have the box and everything it came with... but it's now going to be relegated to the closet of the forgotten

I would stick my sim in it if AT&T still supported it :-\
