Bought a brand new pixel xl from verizon to discover that it won't update unless the verizon sim is inside. Is this even right?? How messed up is that?

Mine updated just fine. Did you put the sim in before the first boot?

I took the verizon sim out before I ever powered it on. It's only ever had my att sim in until I tried this...

It gets the update with the verizon sim in, but the phone won't go through the activation process, it didn't download the 3 verizon apps...it kept failing, maybe because I don't have verizon service?

I have no idea.. But I have the Verizon one and have already updated with no issues..

factory reset phone, went through setup with verizon sim in, 3 verizon apps auto downloaded, finished setup, downloaded update swapped sims and tapped install before the screen dissappeared...it went to 100%, said install failed, then went back to saying system up to date. My pixel WILL NOT update unless the verizon sim is in.

I'm having the same issue. My work Pixel XL is on Verizon with no issues updating. I have a Verizon Pixel on Project Fi and it doesn't recognize any updates are available.

I swapped the Verizon sim card to the Pixel and it recognized and installed the update. I then swapped the Fi sim back to it and all is good. The problem is going to be if people have the Verizon Pixel and decide to change networks. Updates may be released simultaneously to all versions of the Pixel, but if they're only pushed from Verizon to its version, phones not on their network won't receive updates.

I bought a verizon pixel at Best Buy today. Installed my att sim card and got the 7.1.1 and Dec 5 security update. Never used the Verizon sim it came with
