[Please Read 1st Post] ED01 - Samsung releases Froyo source code!

im switching to t-mobile, cheaper and better selection of phones in my opinion... i will never buy another samsung, regardless of their super amoled screens...the fact that froyo is just now being released is a joke. too many bugs, like gps not working... bye bye fascinate, hello hd7! (i know a lot of people will laugh at the wp7, but its pretty sexy)

btw thanks to everyone , for all the support and hard work put into these forums...without you , phones like the fascinate would be worthless...

Hey Dizz, just need to ask a question here. Not trying to be a jerk, just think the question needs to be asked and give you something to think about. On 03-16 you posted in the "New to the Fascinate Forums" thread. In that post you said you had a Fascinate with nothing but problems, so you switched to a Droid X. Had that for a month and got bored with it, so you came back to the Fascinate. Now a month later you want to get rid of the Fascinate, switch carriers, and go with a wp7. The question is, is there ANY phone out there that is going to make you happy? I just wanted to give you some perspective and help you realize no phone is perfect. Every phone and every carrier is going to have good points and bad points. I wish you the best of luck in your search for the perfect phone. I just hope you don't get overly frustrated if you are unable to find it.

Very good point, DX had froyo so appearently froyo or not it doesnt matter. Everyone gets crazy over updates, then when they get it they dont care for it. Thats why i always say i dont care about updates i just want aphone im happy with. I have the TB and i just dont like it, infact cant wait to get rid of it. even if it got GB tomorrow it would still be on its way out the door

I work with a couple people who suffer from cell phone ADD... They get a new phone and two months later are looking at their carrier's site to see what's new for them to want. It's crazy. I'm just glad I finally have a phone I can really get in to and customize how I want it. I'll probably keep my Fascinate for a good long while.

SC is still based off the official touchwiz based ROM. Cyanogen is based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) so it is code straight from Google without all the carrier and manufacturer bs. Also all of Cyanogen has moved to only being based on Gingerbread, so we won't be seeing a fully functioning CM ROM for quite some time. Jt1134 and punk.kaos are close with their respective CM builds but have a few bugs and non working functions in common left. And those things apparently can't be cleared up without certain code from Samsung which they have said is apparently extremely difficult, if no impossible, to get.

I assume we're talking months?

... It does NOT mean that Verizon Wireless has any plans whatsoever to officially release Froyo for the Fascinate.

It also does NOT mean that VZ will NOT release the code ever, as you have stated repeatedly with confidence in the forums. The release is definitely a good sign, and it is a reason to be excited.

I have seen all your doomsday posts that the Fascinate is NEVER going to get Froyo, blah, blah, blah. They are completely unproductive and based on nothing other than your negative attitude. Show us some internal documents from verizon that back up your claim that the Fascinate will never get Froyo. The Fascinate forums here at AC are happy, friendly forums and I think everyone would like to keep them that way.

Get em, Sharky.

If I could "like" things on Android Central, I would definitely like this post.

But as of now I'm sticking to a "thanks". :)

Question about ED01 & DL 09

Ok, so I think im getting a little better.... but i have a question... ok so i downloaded ED01 (the froyo.zip) from that official website... and when it unzipped it ended up being two files.... so I put them in an update-api folder and then put it into my phone..... I might be doing this wrong... but then Obviously the update didn't start..... do I also need to download the DL09 (kernal updates.zip)??? and put it in the same folder??? PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE.... I HAVENT ROOTED MY PHONE YET! since this is an official samsung release, I should be able to update without rooting right??? Please you guys Im an extremely fast learner .. and im a tech geek at heart... I need some guidance!!!!!

to sum it up these are my questions....
-Should I download both the ED01, DL09 files from Samsung, or just the ED01?
-Do I absolutely need to root my phone to take advantage of 2.2 or not. (if so please, please, please send me a link or a video to teach me how, using the most up-to-date methods)
-Should I name the folder update-api?? (ive never heard of api being named on an update folder)
-why are these files .gz extensions?? I've never heard of that before....

please help me fellow techies:):):) Im going to kill myself If i have to deal with 2.1 another day!!!!! hahahah JK!!!!

you dont do anything with source code unless you are a ROM developer ...source code is like the blue prints and not the building.

The ED01 is source code, not an update. There isn't an update yet. This is strictly for developers to use as a base to code with. So as it's been said multiple times already in this thread, if you aren't a developer, this is useless to you.

Rom manager is a no go on the Fascinate

If you want to update to froyo so badly.
