Pondering VM over Sprint

Currently have an Optimus S, dazzled by VM?s fee prices. Put simply, it appears that I could get a VM Triumph with the 120 plan and still save, at least when amortized over two years. But that leaves questions, one of them being will Sprint puni$h me for walking -- I?m not asking that here. I am asking you:

I see a lot of negativity on this Triumph forum -- is this because of the phone or the service?

Speaking of, does VM deliver reliable 3G? I do a lot of internetting; not heavy-duty, just surf a lot.

Does VM have any 4G plans, or does that depend on who?s helping them -- ironically, Sprint?

You?ve already almost talked me out of it, but I?m still a bit curious...

I've had a triumph since it's release and haven't had any problems. If you get a lemon, return it until you get one that works properly.

I'm in San Diego and the VM service has been reliable 90% of the time. There have been a few outages since February or March...It's usually only down for a few hours or so. I've never had any problems with call quality though...that's been great.

no 4g yet.

I'm on the $25 plan...no regrets

Your situation sounds a lot like mine a little over a year ago. I switched over to VM from Sprint in July 2010. Best decision I ever made, and I don't regret it one bit. As long as your contract period is over, Sprint can't "punish" you for switching over, and bringing your number with you, for that matter.

I first went with the $25 plan because, like you, I surf a lot more than I talk. But I found myself going over the 300 minutes too many times. But, even on the $40 plan, I'm saving tons of money every month. My wife and I were sharing 1200 minutes for $140 at Sprint.

I'm in Northern California and my coverage, both voice and data, are on par with what I was used to at Sprint. The only time I was disappointed was on a camping trip. My buddy, on Sprint, had coverage but I didn't. That was because he was roaming on Verizon's towers. As VM customers, we are not able to roam. Other than that your experience will be exactly what you're used to at Sprint.

Hope that helps.

The negativity about the triumph is not because of poor service, it is because the triumph is a buggy phone. VM is powered by the sprint network, so you get the same coverage as sprint but you are on a lower priority than sprint. I used to be on sprint, switched to VM and coverage has been the same. Outages occur once every few months maybe. I live about 45 miles away from detroit and service has been good, 3G speeds are great too.

Honestly if you really want to switch to VM at least wait until most of the issues with the triumph have been fixed. As of right now the gps takes a long time to get a fix, bluetooth doesn't work well, signal reception is much worse than the optimus v, screen flicker, and the back button & screen are not always responsive.
