Poor Battery Life

BUT - and correct me if I'm wrong - don't you lose data/settings when you root? If I could root my phone right now without having to reinstall or reinstate anything, I'd be up for it. I've had it since May, so I've got a lot of stuff piled up in the memory banks...

The rooting process is not what wipes the phone - it's the process of unlocking the bootloader. Unfortunately, there's no way to root without unlocking.

See...that's what I heard. I think I'd rather just wait until my upgrade and maybe root it immediately before I have anything invested in it.

Although...don't you basically give up the automatic OTA updates when you root?

Yes but odds are youll have a rom based off that ota long before you would have gotten it.

Either this, or usually the same day that the OTA starts pushing out, there will be a rooted flashable version released as a zip that you just flash through recovery.

i've found out that if you turn off your background data and auto-sync under accounts and sync settings it makes a world of difference....ive gone 8 hours like that with checking fb, mail and text messages (just refresh for mail) and i've only used 1/4 of my battery. btw i've had my phone since April.

Not true.. I did a "quick & easy" root on my phone (found at XDA's forums) that did not unlock the bootloader, so technically, it wasn't a complete root, but it still let me run "root only" apps.

I gave up on rooting my phone because I figured if my phone suddenly broke and needed a repair, I didn't feel like going through the hassle of unrooting.

Back to the topic at hand, I'm with everyone else with poor battery life.. After resetting to factory defaults twice (and wiping my SD partition), I still end up getting just around 8-9 hours of life before the gauge goes red..

My typical day is around 6:30am, play about 5 or 10 minutes of Words with Friends, read a few e-mails, and then turn the phone off.. Today I did that, and checked my phone at noon.. I was down to 45%.. 45% after hardly using my phone! I don't have Facebook notifications turned on, I have Sports Mobile widget running, the News & Weather widget running (updates every 3 hours), but other than that, not much else. What's weird is, some days the battery life varies so much. Let's say I don't use the phone at all from 6am on.. Sometimes I'm still at 75% by 5pm! Are you telling me that that 15 minutes of Words and browsing my e-mail caused my battery life to go down that much quicker? So unpredictable!

I also have a complicated somewhat battery-related question.. I've heard conflicting answers from "experts", but does anyone know if Live Wallpapers are running in the background while you're running other apps? And also, what about when the phone's screen is off completely? Does the OS know to turn off the Live Wallpaper? I'd love to have some cool LWs in the background but not if it really makes a big difference.

I've been able to get some decent battery life by both regular calibration and my system settings.
I'm currently at 73% on my battery after 6.5 hours.
I'm running on AOSP oicsv43 ROM with the Matr1x 14.5 kernel.
Active scheduler: deadline
Governor: ondemand
Min CPU: 210
Max CPU: 840
Live OC: 105%
Deep Idle: On

I really think the biggest thing that has helped has been the battery calibration tho.
My process has been to:
1. Drain the battery fully
2. Do a FULL charge with the phone off
3. Boot up into recovery and wipe battery stats
4. Boot up into phone and run the battery calibration utility (available for free in the market)
5. Take the phone off the charger and repeat the process once more.
I make sure I do this process anytime I update my ROM or kernel.

I've been able to have my phone off the charger for over 24 hours with moderate use (games, twitter, G+, email, SMS).

One of Google's engineers has already verified that the wiping of the battery stats file does nothing for the life of a battery, so you can skip that step.

Also, I thought all the battery calibration utilities did was wipe the battery stats file once the phone is up to 100% charge; so again I say that I don't think that these utilities are doing much to help your battery life.

I'm guessing what is helping your phone is maybe your custom ROM and/or kernel.

Yeah, I had read that too. Though I think what also may be helping is actually fully draining the battery and fully charging it at least once.

Live wallpapers only drains the battery when your on the lockscreen or when your in the home launcher. I used watchdog to check.

You can try keeping it on wifi on throughout the day. I did that at school and easily get 12 hours.

Agreed, if WiFi is available use that. I always had significantly better battery life while connected to WiFi.

Without wifi my bat life is horrid.
