I've posted this a few times, but have yet to get a response. Can someone who has seen the 2.1 in action report on the keyboard enhancements that are included? In particular, wondering if arrows for cursor control or the "slide magnifying box" (ala iphone and Storm) has been added. I find it remarkable that neither Droid nor any of the 3rd part kepyboard apps have this functionality (although it may be getting added to the "Smart Keyboard" app soon).

Thanks in advance for letting me know if 2.1 addresses this issue at all.

Ouch..........Moto had "Virtual (on-screen) keyboard enhancements" listed as part of the changes for 2.1............This list has appeared many places (see 2nd item).....Dang.


*Voice recognition for virtual keyboard. Anywhere you can type, you can dictate. Swipe your finger across the keyboard (or press the microphone button) to activate. Same as one found on the Nexus One.
*Virtual (on-screen) keyboard enhancements.
*3D Gallery: Should be the same as the new gallery that?s on the Nexus One, and that?s been ported to the Droid.
*Pinch to zoom: Already on board for the recently updated Google Maps, now you?ll have it in the browser and gallery.
*News and weather widget/app. That?s the widget from the Nexus One that we get questions about in our videos.
*Previously published Google Maps 4.0 improvements.
*Enhanced Music application. New tabs at the top for easier access an navigation to artists, songs, albums and playlists.
*Google Goggles: Now built into Android 2.1. No separate downloads.
*Fixes the the buggy screen lock mechanism.
*Yahoo e-mail now has setup optimization.

In my brief experience of seeing 2.1, I didn't notice any big differences in layout or additional keys added (e.g., arrows), but maybe I missed it. The enhancements they refer to above could be related to accuracy and speed and not necessarily layout or key additions.

I haven't read that anywhere either. I hope they don't add some crap like that, would mean smaller buttons and would make it harder to type.

I would love multitouch on the keyboard tho! too often i find myself typing faster than the keyboard can keep up and then i have to go back and make all my corrections. which i'm glad i have a physical keyboard for that!

Droid does allow you to view photos without 2.1
Droid does allow you to download apps and use them without 2.1
Droid does allow you to take pictures without 2.1
Droid does allow you to shoot video without 2.1
Droid does allow you to view emails without 2.1
Droid does allow you to browse the internet without 2.1
Droid does allow you to make phone calls without 2.1
Droid does allow you to send texts and mms's without 2.1
Droid does allow you to use widgets without 2.1
Droid does allow you to set alarms without 2.1
Droid does allow you to store and sync contacts and calenders without 2.1
Droid does allow you to use gps, maps and navigation without 2.1
Droid does allow you to voice search without 2.1
Droid does allow you to watch youtube without 2.1
Droid does allow you to do anything that the droid would do without 2.1 without 2.1

The only thing that droid doesn't do without 2.1 is use the features you would get with 2.1.

Quit complaining about droid not doing things! Do you have a perfectly working phone that does a bunch of other sh** that some other phones don't? Yes you do!

Also, to everyone that wants it their way and wants their phone to be on the bleeding edge without testing...

Go start your OWN phone manufacturing company!

Then

Go start your OWN cell phone provider!

Now that you have that done you can control the content and OSes that go with your phone...

You can also deal with the complaints you get from customers about how you pushed buggy untested software to their phones and then you can experience your customers leaving because you have crap Quality Control and your phones aren't stable at all. Then you can experience the loss of money and your cell phone provider going out of business because people want a stable phone that is usable and reliable on a daily basis.

Now you go have fun with that and until you do that you will get what Motorola and Verizon wants us to get when they want us to get it and no sooner!

That is how EVERY cell phone manufacturer and provider is so go switch to the N1 oh cool it has 2.1 but what about when a phone with 2.2 comes out and you don't get it when you want it... Are you going to spend money to switch to that on... OH HEY A PHONE WITH 2.3 came out and now you aren't getting that one when you want it and now you are going to go spend money... OH HEY A PHONE WITH 2.4 came out and now you aren't getting that update when you want it so you are going to go spend... OH HEY A PHONE WITH 2.5 came out and now you aren't getting that update when you want it so you are going to go spend money.... OH HEY A PHONE WITH 2.6 came out and now you aren't getting that update on time so you are going to go spend MORE money on that phone when suddenly... OH HEY A PHONE WITH 3.0 COMES OUT AND NOW YOU ARE GOING TO SWITCH TO THAT PHONE BECAUSE YOUR PHONE WITH 2.6 ISN'T GETTING 3.0 WHEN YOU WANT IT...

Have fun with spending thousands of dollars a year on a new phone every month just because you aren't getting the update you want in the time frame you want.

Now with that being said... I think I will wait for 2.1 to come out on the Droid.

Seriously, slow down on the late night coffee and amphetamine binges.

However, I do agree with you. There's nothing wrong with the device without 2.1. The manufacturer or the carrier doesn't owe us a darn thing.

If I bought an expensive TV today and then a few months later the same TV manufacturer makes a TV with a better picture quality, does that make my "old" TV crap? No. Am I entitled to a "free upgrade"? No. Did a make a poor purchasing decision? No, it served my needs at the time I bought it. If I did not do my research and feel cheated because the product I bought didn't meet my needs - perhaps I should have researched further and made a better determination of my needs before purchasing the product.

I think ikithme was not very eloquent and a bit aggressive in that post. But, the point is valid. Impatience over 2.1 coming is one thing. But, anger and disapointment over a perceived delay is not warranted (in my opinion).

I know what you mean... a phone is a hobby for me, a distraction, a game. Even when I used a smartphone as a business tool, it was still partly a hobby to keep up with developments and see what the latest hack are.

I don't understand why someone buys a phone and then complains that it doesn't meet their needs. Did you NOT know what you wanted when you bought the thing? Why is it the carrier or manufacturer's fault that the consumer was so uninformed?

I'm happy with my Droid.

I think when Moto pulled the trigger on announcing the 2.1 release, it got everyone crazy. Its like showing a child a new toy, and putting it away for an indefinite amount of time, letting them know they can have it "soon"

If Moto never said a thing, we all wouldn’t be up in arms now.

Yes my Moto Droid does every thing I need on 2.01, but 2.1 would be nice!!

What is everyone looking forward to in 2.1?

The only things I care about are Google Earth, live wallpapers (Oh lord I hope so, and don't say it wont have it because none of us know yet, so save it), the new gallery, new app tray? (I hope so too!) and flash (yes I know it wont drop with 2.1 most likely, but I am sure they'll make flash 2.1 only lol)

I already have all the function I need, I now want beauty!
