FWIW... thought this was funny. I went into the verizon store today to help my mother-in-law with some issues she's having with her phone...

While I was there I asked the guy about possible release date of 2.1 (just to see what he'd say). He actually said, "There's a new OS coming? really? I haven't heard anything."

So, I'm thinking this guy is a total idiot. I pulled my Droid out for an incoming message. He sees my case and says, "Sweet case. may I have a look." It's a Piel Frama leather job - it is sweet. So, I hand him my Droid and he opens the case and fiddles with the Droid for about 2 seconds.

Now, I'm rooted, flashed a rom, live wallpapers... the works. I'm thinking... if this guy's too dumb to know about 2.1 release, then he surely won't know what he's looking at (i.e. voided warranty with root).

In about 2 seconds flat, he hands the phone back to me and says, "smoked glass, eh? What ROM are you running? Droidmod 1.0 or Bugless? How you like the new multi-touch browser?" Then he just smiles, and says, "Patience, it'll be here soon. Don't be dumb. Don't let anyone else in this store look at your screen." My jaw just dropped. I mumbled "...ummm... thanks."

So... point is, if a verizon employee plays dumb. It might be just that, playing dumb. These guys are more in the know than we give them credit for.

Haha, wow prometheus. Lucky you got that guy instead of some (too) Verizon-loyal employee. I'm betting he played stupid because he's sick of people asking about the 2.1 update. Either way, pretty cool that he kept it on the dl. Wouldn't surprise me if he himself was rooted...

yeah, he had to be rooted. That's funny, a VZW employee rooted. Wonder how many there are? Those guys are tech junkies.

Yea but he wasn't trying to return his phone so they couldn't do anything right? Anyways it sounds like 2.1is coming soon! So what kind of timeline do you guys have in mind? Do you think at this point there won't be an announcement and the update is just gonna show up one day? I woke up this morning and there was an update for one of my apps in the little bar and for some reason my first thought was its 2.1!...stupid me

Same timeline it always has been; between right now, and march the 31st (probably a bit before the 31st as stated by "soon" and not Q1).

I highly highly highly HIGHLY doubt verizon OR moto will say anything about it until its actually been pushed (and even then they might keep quiet!). Last time a mouth was opened, a foot rammed its way in.

So yeah, you'll wake up one morning (or halfway through the day, or whenever) and it'll be there, prompting you to let it update.

And we'll all squeal like little girls (oh, you KNOW you will) and run to our computers like children flock to the Christmas tree on Christmas, and tell everyone that it happened.

And everyone will be happy once again...............until 2.2, "NOW WITH A CANDY BUTTON!"


But to answer your question; Yeah, it'll just happen sometime between today and the 31st.

Maybe not too stable but come on, its' better then being stocked and being that little boy or a girl looking outside for that snow on xmas that never happens...

agreeable... But some people just wish for this update too much and always get annoyed with someone who doesn't even work for either company hands-on... Then they go should I or shouldn't I..

I haven't been thru an OS update on Android yet, so I can't speak from experience. All I can compare it to is Blackberry updates. So, I wouldn't assume that I would get any more stability out of an official update than I would out of a hack.

For me, it comes down to functionality coupled with design. having 99% of 2.1 functionality, themes, AND stuff beyond 2.1, AND overclocking.... Why would I downgrade to stock 2.1? stability? that's not even guaranteed.

Same here. And hopefully, within a month, they will have cracked the 2.1 droid and ported it to all the ROMs.

The only way I would go back to stock is if it had 5 screens and the 2.1 launcher that worked without FC's. My Droid cannot work the 2.1's in ROMs without FC's, so having a nice working one would be ideal.

I have officially given up on 2.1. I just see no use in it anymore. I have been rooted for a while, and the quality of ROMs has increased alot lately. I'm currently running Smoked Glass v5.0 (released today AllDroid - View topic - [ROM.tgz] Smoked Glass v5.0.1 **BIG Update 02/27** ) and it is way better than what you can expect with Droid 2.1. I've also got AdamZ's custom kernel http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=311&t=2463 and with these two together i'm not even gonna consider going official 2.1 until root access is found. What significance do you guys see in 2.1 except for no fear of a voided warranty (super small percentage anyway).

reliability in what sense? by definition, reliability can only be proven over time. some of these roms are just a few days old (or less than one day). before we declare anything "unreliable" let's actually give it a chance.

i think GenericMessage was answering the OP's question about what they see in an official 2.1. Stating he sees reliability in the official build not a custom ROM.

ok that makes sense. yes, I would agree, in very general terms, official releases are more stable and reliable than roms. I thought he was saying a one day old rom was unreliable. you're right, he was probably speaking about the broader issue of hack vs. official.

So I've noticed 2 new droid commercials on tv this weekend one of them being luke wilson and at&t taking some shots at the droid and the other being verizon anouncing the droid is now buy one get one free...in my hopes I would like to think it might correspond with the 2.1 release...I know its highly doubtful though...also I know a lot of you who are rooted think its stupid that some of us are still waiting for the 2.1 release but that's what this thread is for
