Confirm basic info

I went to my local Verizon store in Atlanta today and was speaking with one of the reps about the two Droids about to drop. He said that the Eris models they have and were trained on are all running Android 2.0 software with the full Google voice and navigation like the Moto Droid. This is different from everything I have seen with the Eris running Android 1.5. Anyone else heard this?

We have 2 HTC Eris cells. I recently went to a Verizon store. They said expect a massive download which will include an major update to the Google Maps app sometime this month. Though they didn't specifically say that Android was going to be updated, that sounds very reasonable.

For those of you who just MAY get a valid 2.1 update, dont get it right away do the following so everyone else can grab it and download it manually to install on our phones to beat the OTA wait.

1)Deny the OTA update when the phone prompts you, dont worry you can manually get this later.

2) Install the SDK on your computer and run the command

adb -d logcat UpdateReceiver:I CheckinService:I *:S

3)It will shoot out a link, POST IT and we can then download the RUU for our own use, including distribution to all of us who haven't got the update via OTA.

And the Eris is damn close to being rooted. If you're interested in rooting your device, follow this advice as well. I know the kernel is different and any known exploit will be patched.

I did it. Swapped my storm 2 for an eris. Only had it since last night. So far love it!!!! It would be awesome now if it gets the 2.1 upgrade soon

Just gonna repeat myself again for those who missed it last time...

Eris 2.1 is still in testing. It just started at the friendly user stage, and has a ways to go. There can't be a release if testing isn't complete. Any word otherwise is an unfounded rumor.

Well, i'm confused. So do you guys think when the update comes, we shouldn't do it? I would like to root my Eris, but i'm confused as to what I should do when the update comes.

I think the point of the post about delaying was the OTA for 2.1 was meant for anyone that the 2.1 update was getting leaked out to. I think the general consensus is now that the 2.1 is not currently being leaked OTA to normal users, rather it went out to testers.

Chances are, when the 2.1 update does actually hit, you'll read about it somewhere before it hits your handset.

As for whether or not you should delay the update, if you plan to root your phone then you should delay the update. If you don't care about the root process, go ahead and update.

It must not be time for the update or at least one person from Android central would have gotten it. I personally will believe it when I see it.

wait for official updater before you root. should be getting that update before the end of the month. then after root

I turned my Eris on this morning and my lock screen looked like the one on the N1 and not what I had on there before I turned it off last night. Has any one else seen this today?

eris to be getting 2.1 OTA this week

i just got off the phone with verizon tech support. the guy told me that they had recieved the update from htc last week and have been testing it and had no problems so far. he said he has not heard of any news of sending it back to htc for any problems. when i asked about a release date he said it should be put out OTA before the end of this month! that means this week. any problems. when i asked about a release date he said it should be put out OTA before the end of this month! that means this week. this month! that means this week.

They sure have no problem at big red spreading rumors. I hope what you heard was true. I was told last week that is was released at 3 last Thursday.
