power save background data is causing a lot of problems for me

Before marshmallow, we were able to choose what power save mode would turn off (cpu usage, light up keys at the bottom, greyscale and background data). I used to opt out of turning off the background data because it would mess with the Play Store but now I can't turn it on while it's in power save mode. Also when you get the background data back on, I would have to take the phone out of power save mode and restart the phone. Any ideas?
