As the genre itself implies, the player's task is to achieve various predetermined goals on a limited area with limited resources and in a limited amount of time. However, the series also includes a "sandbox" mode where players can create their own challenges or just play casually.
Each game in the series has its own theme, Townopolis focuses on building a small town, Romopoils is set in the time of ancient Rome, and finally Megapolis brings the building of modern city zones.
