It didn't do anything for me...
Before I uploaded the hybrid PRL I did some extensive speed testing during various times of the day and also kept track of the towers my phone connects to with the OpenSignal app. My phone constantly changes between 4 towers that are less than a mile from me, and they all have the same crappy signal strength that keeps fluctuating. This is probably due to reflections of the signal and multipath propagation.
I then changed to the hybrid PRL and found that nothing changed. Same constant switching between towers (probably to triangulate its position) and the 3G data speeds were the same (DL between 0-300kbps).
Since it didn't make any difference I changed back to the original PRL last night. Same speeds and same tower switching. When I checked the speed again this morning I get speeds of around 700kbps down. Twice as good as usual.
Now if I would have switched to the hybrid PRL last night I can see one might attribute the speed increase to the new PRL. What really is going on is that propagation is enhanced. (Happens every moning for VHF, UHF and SHF signal; propagation enhancement drops of when the sun heats up the atmosphere. This can happen in the evening too when the atmostphere cools down or when a cold front moves in.) So I'm wondering if folks really are experiencing differences due to propagation changes or for some other reason, rather than the PRL change. Just because you see an improvement after you changed the PRL doesn't mean it is because of that PRL change. That's the common thereafter-therefore fallacy.
No one on here checks which towers their phone actually connects to. Isn't that the whole point of changing the PRL? Without checking which towers your phone is using before and after the PRL change, you cannot possibly say if changing the PRL has any effect.
So my question is, has anyone else actually checked if their phone is connecting to different towers so that you can positively say that changing the PRL helped? I really would like to see some actual data, which is easy to come by with the free app I mentioned earlier.
