Project Fi

My experience was that porting my number over was simple and fast.

It's up to you how you set up your device but I personally use Hangouts for texting so that I have the option of replying from ANY device logged in to my Google account. You can also make phone calls from any device - I once called my bank's tech support using my computer and they were none the wiser.

Been on Fi since day one with no problems. It's low cost, great coverage, and the simplest bill you will see in your life.

Enjoyed my time on Fi. We used 2 Moto Nexus 6's and about 0.5 Gb of data for a monthly cost of $45. But we recently switched to T-Mobile's One Unlimited 55+ for a flat $60 per month. No more sipping or turning off data. Best plan out there for us.
I've been on Fi for over a year, & a few months ago I added my fiance to my Fi account. Previously we'd each been paying about $85 a month, now for both of us it's less than $50 total. Coverage has been great, customer service has been great, I definitely recommend it for anyone who doesn't use tons of data.

I've also been thinking we'll switch to TMobile after I turn 55 this fall, because unlimited for both of us for $60 a month seems like a really great deal, & I won't have to keep reminding him to keep his data turned off . Any negatives with that TMobile plan that you've noticed?

I signed up last week. My first attempt at speaking with customer service ended with them giving me a very definitive answer to my question. I was told that signing up with the same account I already used for Google Voice would not affect the GV number. After the chat I was sent a link with more information, that completely negated the info I was given. had I moved forward as is, I would have lost a number I've been using for business for the last five years. Luckily I read the link and was able to move that number to another Google account.

I was one level down in a parking garage. I had three bars with Verizon and zero bars with Fi.

When I am on the phone with someone, we end up talking over each other. This only used to happen with Verizon if I was talking with someone who was using an iPhone. It happens now with everyone I speak with.

Saving money on my phone bill is all well and good, but the service needs to work. According to their maps, I am in a solid green area with 100% coverage. That has not been my experience.

Very satisfied Project Fi user for over a year with Nexus 6P and recently Moto X. Have used successfully on extensive international travel including South Africa (Pretoria to Cape town by train), New Zealand - (coverage good on both Islands except far south), Cook Islands, Peru (including Cuzco and Andes to South) and most recently throughout Egypt and Jordan. Also worked well on RV trips to Vancouver Island, Seattle to Sacramento, and California, Oregon and much of Washington coasts. Love predictability of costs and excellent voice over WIFI as well as excellent, responsive tech. support on rare occasions it is needed!

We're considering that, so I am going to try T-Mobile by using MintSIM for three months before we decide.

I canceled my account last night. I can see how it would be sufficient for personal use, but it's not solid enough to use as my primary business phone.

There is an update to the data plans! Up to 15 GB will now only cost $60. After 15 GB, you get throttled with an opportunity for full speed again if you want to pay $10 per GB above 15 GB.

Data is also no longer pre-paid with a refund at the end of the cycle, you now get billed for the data used at the end of the billing cycle.

My wife has been on Fi for the last year plus. It's been great and far cheaper than when she had Verizon.

Interestingly enough, she received a notice today that Fi now caps data charges at $60/month. Normally they charge $10/GB but now if you use more than 6 GB you'll only pay $60.

If you have a group of 2 like we have, then the data cap is 10GB of shared data.
So the maximum a group of 2 would ever pay would be $20 + $15 + $100 = $135.
Since we use only WiFi data, our cost will simply remain at $35/month for the two of us.

Greetings,

Ok, so - just signed up for Project Fi and ordered a Pixel 2 XL. Please put my mind at ease and tell me I made a good decision.

I made the mistake of reading a bunch of posts on Project Fi's Facebook page (which I'm not even sure if that's an official page or not) and there's nothing but horrible stories and comments - yikes. People crucifying the customer service (or supposed lack thereof), and the overall experience in general. I'd like to think that these are just your typical trolls and people that are never happy with anything, but I'm not sure.

I haven't read anything horrifying here on AC, but then again I haven't read a ton of posts, either. I realize there will always be some horror stories no matter what it is ... but please, for the love of whatever, tell me I made a good choice here!

Thanks

Hey they just essentially made the 6gb plan "unlimited". You essentially get the data free from 6 to 15gb. Max cost is $80 a month. Now if you go over 15gb you'll get throttled but 15gb for $80 month is good to me.

I love Project Fi. It's been great in the 2 years I've had it and I love their billing as well as their app.

I had used fi from November 2016 to December 2017. Was generally happy but also moved on to TMobile for the 55+ plan. Cheap $50/month unlimited data/voice/text for one line and BOGO for LG V30 was too tempting to pass up.

But I liked fi. I may some day go back as I still tend to use little data even when on unlimited plan.

Project file Pros:
1 Pay only for data used down to the megabyte.
2 Great Customer Service via Phone or Chat
3 Simple billing and good account info app.

Project file Cons:
1 Expensive per gig cost ( $10 ). Was competitive 2 years ago, not so much now. Mint and Republic Wireless drastically less than that now.
2 Phone selection is kinda weak at the moment.
3 Google's ineptness when it comes to SMS-Chat apps strategy. Hangouts had finally become a great all in one sms-chat-voice app and they decide to release a bunch of singular replacement apps and decide to use Hangouts as a business Slack fighter app. Hangouts future is up in the air and communication from Google about future plans for all in one app like Apple's iMessage or Facebook Messenger has been non existent. This is also a reason for my bailing out. TMobile has multi device and cross platform SMS in their Digits app which was another thing that drew me to TMobile.

I hope Google can get their act together in a good Hangouts replacement and better per gig pricing because fi is excellent otherwise.

Well the better pricing is here with the bill cap at $60 for up to 15 GB, throttled to 256kbs after 15 GB, unless you want to pay to keep your speed at that point. It was what I was waiting for, made the switch from Sprint last night. Took about 5 minutes to port number over. Yay! Visual Voice mail is working now. I still can't believe Sprint didn't support the built in Visual Voice mail from Google.

Well truly it is $80. The cap for data is $60 -- but it totals / caps at $80 once you include the basics.

Fi is great w/ this new unlimiited plan for low data users (just like before). If you are low usage most of the time with occasional spikes every few months this unlimited plan is worth since you save money during those times where you are in the low tier. If you plan to use it like it is unlimited it is pretty expensive at $80 and you could find many other places that offer unlimited with only a de-prioritization soft cap instead of a hard cap.

True, being that the wife and I are on the same plan, it will top out at 135. So that helps a bit. Also I am willing to pay more just to get away from Sprint.

Yeah just depends on that data usage. it truly is great for lower tier people -- higher tier you could pay less elsewhere and get more.
