As we have heard, our Evos are Unofficially going to get a 2.3 Gingerbread OTA update on June 3rd. [Source]

You do NOT need to unroot to get this update! Can't make it more simple than that. A rooted version of the OTA (Meaning its exactly the same as the OTA, but rooted) will be released before, or on the day of the OTA if it happens.

DO NOT UNROOT. If you unroot and accept the OTA, you run the risk of not being able to get root again as who knows what kind of locks and such that could be in this update to prevent it.

Also, if you are considering rooting but are still stock as of this moment I would strongly suggest you root BEFORE the OTA update hits because, again, we have no idea what is in the Update that may prevent you from rooting.

So to sum it all up, if you like root then: Dont unroot, root now while you definately can, and a rooted version of the update will 100% be available before or on the day of the OTA update to Gingerbread 2.3.

-Cheers to official Gingerbread 2.3 on our Evo's!

Edit: OTA on June 6th, Manual Update on June 3rd.

So I just rooted a couple of days ago myself, how then can i get the update prerooted, sorry kinda new i did my root myself and still are having a hard time with ROMs and such, I just rooted and unistalled the garbage I didnt want and thats all I wasnt really planning on adding ROMs and stuff, sorry guys for being such a newb

When the update is released, a rom will be released and there will be a thread for it here on AC. Until then, we just hope that this update actually happens lol

Thanks for the post! Really put my mind at ease. I came on here wondering exactly this. I rooted my Evo 4G a few weeks ago. I put on the CyanogenMod but I liked having Sense UI better so I removed it. I'm back to being stock but rooted but I was worried that I would have to reinstall and setup everything all over again like I did when I put on Cyanogen. Hopefully this isn't the case for this update.

If youre on stock rooted you might be able to get away with flashing the new rooted stock version on top of it without a wipe. Nandroid and try is all you can do :p

So I think i will wait for the rooted version of official Gingerbread. But I have no clue how to install it once it comes out. Can someone help me understand how to do that?

So you are saying to NOT do the OTA update. If you are rooted and using aGB rom, stick with it. Is this correct

If you're using a GB rom right now then you could not worry about it suppose, but I was saying that if you want the ota update, a rooted version of it will be available so don't unroot.

so actually i just read that sprint's releasing the OTA version on june 6th with the manual install version to be released tomorrow...

"Can't Wait Until June 6?

For those who just can’t wait to get Android 2.3, there will be an easy user initiated option to download the upgrade starting on Friday, June 3. To access the update – from the home screen/Menu/Settings/System updates/HTC software Update. This will initiate the upgrade process."

if we ARE rooted...
should we stay away from this "manual" update?

or should we just go ahead and manually update?

and how different is the rooted version versus this version coming from htc/sprint?

  1. Stay away from the manual update, wait until the rooted version is out.
  2. The rooted ROM should essentially be the same with the exception of SuperUser/BusyBox installed

Just a note for others. This is what I did for the last update, it should work for this one but I cannot say for sure, yet.

HTC's update script checked to make sure no Bloat was deleted, but did NOT check to see if your phone was rooted. I unfroze all my Bloat, and accepted the OTA. My phone was unrooted by the OTA (2 files deleted). Then I just pushed a zip containing su and superuser.apk through recovery and was rooted again.

So if you have not deleted any Bloatware, you *SHOULD* be able to upgrade and re-root, as long as you have rooted with Unrevoked3/Forever, but WAIT UNTIL ME OR SOMEONE ELSE TRIES IT FIRST and writes up a guide.

The only benefit to this way is that it WILL NOT wipe your phone like flashing a rooted version of the updated ROM will.

Ok, I did unrEVOked for the sole purpose of being able to use wireless thether but I would like to get the official OTA update that I just downloaded. I tried installing it on top of unrEVOked but it failed.

How can I get back to stock son I can install 2.3?

Why did it say it failed? Did you delete/uninstall bloat?

I tried this and this method did not work for me. The update failed about halfway through. I also made sure I had a stock recovery flashed prior to trying this. Still didn't work.

***UPDATE*** So I realized that I had some stock apps and such frozen through titanium backup. I am unfreezing and am trying the update again.

No, I never deleted anything. Like I said, I did unrEVOked for the sole purpose to use the wireless tether app. Any suggestions on how to get back to stock?

Is there ANYTHING different from stock in your /system partition other than it being rooted? Ie: did you delete/uninstall any bloat apps?

What error did it give?
