Quality Issues With HTC One

As I'm very much interested in this phone, I'm searching all over the internet for the pros & cons of the phone, especially with respect to it's build quality. Unfortunately, there are already lot of build quality issues are being reported, especially in the XDA Forums. The issues, so far reported, goes from the gaps, poorly finished holes(audio jack & speaker phone or microphone), poor quality plastic band between front & back parts of the phone and over hangs(miss aligned front or top & back or bottom aluminum cases). This will be a huge set back for HTC and the eagerly waiting customers like me :-[. I hope these are those early batches imperfections we see with almost all smartphones and really...really hope that US variants get properly built phones.

So I've got a Euro M7 that's supposedly one of the first off the line. I've got a little -- as in I probably wouldn't notice if you didn't tell me -- play between the aluminum and plastic in one spot.

The rule of thumb for any manufacturing is that sometimes it takes a little bit to get the machines dialed in at the beginning of a run. I used to watch a newspaper press go through this every night. Same is true in this field, too. Ever buy a screen protector as soon as a phone came out? There's a good chance if you got one of the first produced, it might not be perfect. Same sort of thing.

If you're really worried about it, I'd wait.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when they really start getting out to customers.

(And it's important to remember how much of an echo chamber we can be in forums, too.)

That's what I meant by my OP too, which is to wait & hope that the US variants which are arriving after couple of weeks will have no imperfections :)

Same thing applies to software Phil. I got in 61 HTC One x units at work. All with original factory software.
I played with one and it sucked, but after applying the 5 or 6 software updates to bring it up to current release its a great little device.

I think any newly designed device will have initial production run issues, give the hardware and software a month or so and you will start to see a whole lot less of these types or problems.

so that's a good thing for us in the US then given that it was rolled out in Germany, UK and Taiwan first.... ?

possibbly, but we dont know how many variants there are.
They might have different plans manufacturing or assembling for CDMA/LTE vs GSM LTE or what ever they make for different carriers all over the world.
I my self want a HTC One but will wait a few months till after launch date for both hardware and software issues to get resolved.

If you want to buy something with the least amount of issues, don't buy the first batch, or buy it the day it comes out. Wait a little while, like a month and a half, then buy. I know it will seems like eternity, but thats a chance you take buying something right at launch. After a month or two of mass production the kinks should all be worked out. Just like Phil said above, takes time to get all the machines dialed in to be exact. Also issues that were not noticed by the 50 people testing it will show when tens or hundreds of thousands have it in hand and daily use. Just like cars, never by the first year of a brand new model, give it a year to find all the issues and give them time to correct it.

Mine has a scratch on the lower speaker grill. Was there from the beginning. Other than that, it's perfect.

I too will wait. Walked into a best buy about an hour a go to see it in person. Held a sprint and att variant and Both has issues with the bottom front grill misaligned with the front screen and not sitting flush with the screen. On one side it was and then as you slide your finger over to the opposite side the misalignment was pronounced. Bummer as I could not wait to have one in hand but now will have to wait. Will feel like an eternity.

I mean, I might be able to slide a hair into the gap on mine. Sure, its not airtight, but if you look closely, its there. Ordered mine through ATT on 4/7

To people talking about 'gaps' The reason some handsets have a slight gap is because the speaker grills arent part of the unibody design and were applied seperately, Thats why these gaps are always on the upper side where the grill is

A lot of the complaints I see are from people who look at the demo units.
First off some stores will use subpar units they don't want to sell as demo units
Second, most customers are not careful people when it comes to handling phones
And third! Some alarm systems can damage the phone when it is removed. The HTC one sticks rather well to the sensor pads we use and to move them it takes a lot of elbow grease.

With all that in mind I wouldn't take those claims of build quality seriously because of all those variables. That and they aren't brand new.

Plenty of people have bought their own phone and had these same issues so I don't think you can blame the demos or anything else.

Im on my second One now and both have minor defects but nothing huge. The first one didn't have any gap, top or bottom, which was nice but It had a few dead pixels and some damage around the sim tray. I returned it. I got my replacement and the gaps on it are huge, I can almost stick my nail in the bottom one. It's also got a few dead pixels, 2 are almost in the same position as the first and then one big fat one in the center.
Another thing bugging me about the replacement is this one seems to run hot. Any time I pick it up its almost warm to the touch, not hot, but warmer than a phone not in use should be. Needless to say I think i'm going to return this one too.
Hopefully third Ones the charm.

edit: Also the replacements headset jack port isn't as "trimmed" as the other. Like there is more plastic around the edges of it, if that makes since.

these are same issues I had with my evo 3d. I thought htc would have fixed these issues. I guess it's good people waited to see how the s4 will be. I really like htc but ever since the Evo 3d htc has not been good with quality. I went through 7 units in the year and a half I had it. In fact my 3d that currently have and can't sell is because of defects.

I had a small over hang on the bottom corner, but unless you are going through it with great detail then you would never notice it. I had an issue with the receiving speaker, so I swapped it out at AT&T and the new one is flawless. :)

All of these posts make me very nervous.

Mine arrives tomorrow morning. Returning to Let's Talk to get it replaced is going to be a big time-consuming hassle too. I've waited so long, don't want to wait another month for a return to be turned around.

So all those early reviews about the amazing build quality is pretty much crap. It's amazing if you get lucky and get one with no issues.

the only issues i have ever had with an htc phone was my rezound the charging port went bad,and the refurb has been flawless for nearly 8 months now,my DNA is perfect no scratches or defects granted they are not aluminum, but i would not hesitate to get the one,as my past experiences with HTC have been good.
