Razor THX dongle works great.

Which adapter feels like it fits the smoothest into the USB-C port ? You can't afford risking damage to the port considering everything runs through it now.

All 3 I have slide in smoothly and easily and click into place. The HTC, Razer & the Faracent one I just got

I thought it was poor and saw posts kind of echoing that sentiment when I went looking for a solution, which is where I discovered using other dongles - from other unsatisfied Google dongle users.

Coming from an LG V20 it was a big drop off in SQ for me. I am sure some people will prefer the Google dongle though, but from the posting I've seen in forums it seems the two main other options - HTC & Razer - almost universally get praised as sounding better. But of course, YMMV

The Razer dongle sounds good to me. I feel it's a little more analytical than the HTC dongle, which is a bit warmer. But they both have a nice clean full sound. The HTC is also almost half the price of the Razer. You can't go wrong with either IMO. Everyone that gets either of these seems happy with them over the Google dongle.
