Returned EVO Before 30 Days

These threads will pop up on any site when any new phone comes out. I've seen it more times than I can count. I welcome the opinions. I'm considering jumping the BB ship after 6 years for an EVO after a failed attempt at doing so with the Pre so I like to hear all the bad with the good to help me make my decision.

I know some people will love their phone, but I personally bought it based upon the main features that HTC and Sprint were advertising. What I hope to do by this posting is inform people that they may be happy now but watch what happens when a 4.3", 4g phone, that shoots clear HD, and has no build quality issues comes out in a few months. Will you regret your purchase then? It all comes down to what you purchased the phone for. If you didn't purchase the phone for the main features advertised then what did you purchase it for?

There is a new form of marketing occurring right now folks. Google/HTC releases a phone and then focuses on the next phone to be released. Why invest time and effort into an old phone when you can create news and money with a new phone! It goes back to that old saying, "Out with the old, in with the new". Apple interestingly has found a nice balance which is why they are so successful (whether you like them or not). They focus on one device (iphone) in their cellphone market which makes it easier to update than multiple devices like Google/HTC. By simplifying it down to a flagship device you can create two main areas, Updates and Development. Google/HTC doesn't have the size to support all these android smartphones to a satisfactory level while developing and releasing new devices. The solution would be to wait till the advertised features of a phone meet your standards. It might be a couple phones down the line (few months away).

I think there is a simple lesson to be learned here . . . don't trust that all advertising will meet your expectations. Go and play with the device before you buy.

No, because A 4.3" 4G phone that shoots 1080p and has no build quality issue will be just a few months behind that phone.

If you are scared to buy a device because a better one may come out in a year you might as well be amish because new products and features are introduced constantly.

your probably a very long way away from a phone that is going to shoot "GREAT" or even good quality HD video.... It's a PHONE!!!!! I have no build quality issues with my phone after two weeks. I think the screen looks great... I don't live in a 4G area and I didn't buy the phone based on 4G... Sprints 3G works just fine for me..... 4G will just be a bonus.....

Plus even in a month or two or even 6 there are always going to be a slightly better option hitting the market.... That's just technology for you.... You can't chase technology.... You pick what works for you at the time and go with it until your either eligible for an upgrade or your willing to open up your wallet for some thing new.... The EVO will still be a top 10 smart phone 6 months from now, it won't be the top phone for long... always going to happen when it comes to tech..... Get over it.....End of story.

I passed on the Hero, Pre and Moment over the last year plus. Sprints 30 day return policy at no cost to the customer gave me a reason to take a chance with the EVO. I love it so far... It's a great phone....

I have never owned an iphone or plan to but watch the quality of it's 720 HD recording and you're "long way away" will be dramatically reduced to oh wow...it's here. Also, the 720p was only one of the reasons I returned the phone. Grounding issues and light leakage are problems that should have never occurred in the first place. That's just a rushed job. I was pulling for the EVO %100....I had a preorder...was there on June 4th....even exchanged it hoping I would have gotten a bad egg. It just didn't work out.

And just like in the late 1980's early 1990's with the MAC/Apple computer platform their focus on ONE single product is going to cost them in the long run... Microsoft did the same thing in the 1990's... They put their OS on every computer out there and each computer MFG (HP, Dell, Gateway, Acer) all put some of their own personal touches on top of the Windows OS... Apple got killed and lost all their market share.

Now they have a great product... But they are making the same mistake with the iPhone and iPhone OS.... It can be a much better OS and even Better hardware... But limiting it to ONE device and (so far) one Carrier they are going to get steam rolled by Android.... No single Android device is going to overtake the iPhone.... Androids power is in numbers.... Both in Devices and carrier options.... in the first 6 months of 2010 Android has made up major ground on Apple... RIM still leads the heap...

In the end Apple will be 100% happy with 10% of the smartphone market... They will continue to get a premium from their loyal customers like they have on the MAC/Computer platform for years... Their profit margins will be high but their market share will be small.... But they can continue the control they so very much love and seem to have to have on their device.... Mac still only controls what 10% of the computer market (If that much)??????

Apple has a choice to change and create different phones though if they need to. To say that they will always follow this format isn't necessarily the case. It could cost them in the long run! I completely agree.

I don't have grounding issues and I don't have light leakage issues at all. if the numbers are as they are rumored and Sprint sold say 200,000 EVO's that first weekend and say 5,000 have these light leakage, grounding, and screen lifting problems that is what 2%? Now at the same time how many of these issues are build problems or are customer handling issues? Even if it 90% build issues and 10% customer handling issues (Dropping, leaving in a hot car, getting wet, sitting on it) I know 3 other friends who have EVO's and they also do not have any issues with their phone at all.... 2 - 5% defective product is probably very acceptable from both HTC and Sprint.... It's not ideal.. You want to have 100% positive feedback but any thing that comes off an assembly line is going to have issues here and there.... all it takes is one bad batch of glue used on 5,000 phones out of 1/2 million made and it stands out... Why does it stand out? People with problems are going to complain and are going to be heard 100 times louder than people like me with no problems at all.... As long as they phone does every thing I want it to do and as long as it stays together under regular use I have no reason to complain or even be heard....

Now if I drop it a couple of times, or I leave it in a pocket with keys and change or sit on it after forgetting I left it sitting on the couch or left it out on the table and my 4 year old got a hold of it and drops it.... Yeah you can probably expect some problems to come up.....

Still it's a phone...... New tech is coming out all the time.... in 4 days we went from EVO to iPhone 4 and now Motorola X and a new droid coming in July rumors of a 2 ghz phone for later this year, Qualcomm has already started shipping out to MFG's test 1.2 ghz dual core processors for testing.....

Your very right, and it stings a lot if people to hear the truth. The iPhone will be one of the best devices for what it is advertised for. The video will be awesome, the camera will be as well, the new multi tasking way of working it will be very good and effective, and the build quality will be second to none. I'm no fan boy, I hate at&t with a Passion. However, I will still be getting one for all the reasons I just mentioned.

Buttttt, I will also be keeping my EVO. It's an amazing device, even with its short comings. HTC will get its act together sooner or later. For now I'm keeping my EVO as my personal device of choice, if somethig better comes out in 6 months, I'll simply buy it and bite the bullet....The price you pay for always trying to stay current.

Apple makes a great product... always has.. Any one who says different is as closed minded as the iPhone OS.... But Apple is a one trick pony.... The thing is that one trick is an amazing trick that no one else can replicate (and many have tried)

From a business stand point I love what Apple has done. They have created a very loyal and very vocal following.... Apple customers will buy any thing Apple throws out there.... and a lot of them will do it with out even knowing exactly what it is they are announcing... 10% of any market isn't much but Apple gets a premium price for that 10% and their profit margins are through the roof.... They could EASILY drop the iPhone price to a point where after AT&T subsidized it you could walk out the door with a free phone no cost to you and they would STILL make a small profit....

That isn't their business model... Their is a reason they are a ZERO debt company and have around $30 billion in cash in the bank. They have almost as much cash in the bank as Microsoft which is is 10 times as big....

Apple is the most predictable company out there... Like clock work every June they announce a new iPhone and you can pretty much take it to the bank you won't see a new design of iPhone until June of 2011.... You "MAY" see a T-Mobile, Sprint or Verizon iPhone in the fall but other than working on a different network it's going to be the same design and software.....

ok lets go...

1. What grounding issue? How often do you use your phone without holding it ? If I'm using my phone it's in my hand. If this a problem use speech to text... No issue. Myth busted.

2. The video camera is on the phone. Meh nuff said with that one. Oh ya don't forget the front facing camera pretty sweet. Chat roulette, yes please...

3. 4g.. Ya bud way to try blame sprint for not doing YOUR homework on where sprint 4g areas are. It's a work in progress. 4g is fantastic here in Austin according to sprints website.. Ya I did my homework on sprints 4g areas..

4. I don't even get 30 fps on my home pc when I play wow. So ya I'm not complain about my phone only having 30 fps. Playing games on the phone is cool but if I want to games I'm gonna bust out the p2p...

so ya you basically listed a bunch of moot point just to try to make the evo look bad. Go back to pre central with all that nonsense.

The evo is an amazing piece of technology that blows the pre out of the water. You didn't even give the phone a chance to get an update before you knocked it. The pre has had like 5 updates since they released and the pre was plagued with more problems then I can count. As a matter of fact I just went through 3 refurbished pres in 2 weeks because they were crapre. My sprint store finally just said here ya go and gave me a brand new one.

I think Toyota and BP are hiring if you need a job

I had an iPhone for 2 years.... They make a great device and put out a great OS... I switched to Android and I like it.... I think HTC makes the best hardware out there right now.... Android OS is a little behind what Apple puts out... Apple and HTC are probably neck and neck when it comes to hardware IMO.... It's pretty close... I think HTC is just every so slightly ahead....

The main thing I like about Android is you can get a similar device on just about any network running Android.. My biggest problem with my iPhone was AT&T does not work that great were I live.... Sprints 3G network is actually 3 times bigger than AT&T and the fact that at no cost to me I can roam on Verizon's data network makes Sprint an awesome deal....

let's face it, the reason they keep putting out new phones, (and it's not just HTC, they all do it) is because they know idiots like us will keep buying them. :)

That being said, no phone will be perfect. They all have their "issues" and if you visit this forum in a few months, you won't hear about those "issues" even though they will still be there.

From what I've seen, the Pre has better quality/compression than the EVO. Any thoughts? Are people compressing the EVO video with crap software?
First post you made here a week before the EVO was released and every post after that has had nothing but negative towards the EVO.

Not sure if you are just one of the precentral diehards trolling or if you are just a negative minded person, but you are more than welcome to go back to your palm pre we all know that there have never been any build quality issues with palm and their app selection is just incredible.

Of course we keep buying them... Heck, look at the new iPhone. They have preorders for over 200,000 units already. These are not people just now switching to ATT. These are upgraders who want a new iPhone every year. As long as Apple makes em, people will buy em. Come on, 2 million ipads sold thus far...really?

woomp woomp lol... I used to work for sprint and I had wayyy more pre/pixi owners return there phone so keep that in mind.. you get one crack in that screen that is it over with ... Im not telling you this to stick with the evo im telling you this because i never ever recommended the palm pre because i hated returns .

I've gotten over all the small flaws my Evo has, just as I'd gotten over all the small flaws my Pre had.

The Evo is a very nice phone, and in my opinion it's also the best looking Android device I've seen so far. It's long list of features and beautiful asthetics are what drew me away from WebOS and to finally try out an Android phone.

WebOS made for a phenomenal phone. Android makes for a phenomenal mobile computing device.

However... I am most likely returning my Evo before the 30 days is up. And it's less to go back to the Pre, and more to wait to see what else I can use my upgrade discount on before the holidays. The lackluster 3D performance is a dealbreaker for me. Don't take this the wrong way. I've already said the Evo is an amazing device in many ways. For normal usage and especially for web browsing it's the best phone I've ever had. (although I find the top edge uncomfortable against my ear, I hardly use voice anyway) But I'm a gamer and Gameloft especially has some tremendous offerings for the smartphone population. Very few of those are available for Android and the ones that are run horribly on the Evos underpowered GPU.

Every phone has flaws, that's life. I'm glad i'm not so anal that I nit pick every piece of electronics I own. If I were I would be in a nut house. I'm pretty sure my phone has none of the little issues that were brought up here tonight. The only problem I have had was push email on Google, it wasn't working but it appears that has been corrected. So I am happy and will be till the next best or greatest thing comes out. I keep my phones on average about 6 months so i'm not concerned nor do I sweat the small stuff.
