I am returning my Nexus. I really liked it but my phone could not hold on to a signal. I called google because it would not remain connected and always lost the signal. Other phones did have reception so it was not the carrier. I called google and the CS rep was not helpful and rude. She did not know what a SIM card was. They said they would send a replacement phone out and I should expect it next week. To me that is unacceptable, if my phone won't make calls or hold on to data I except a overnight replacement not a week from now. Plus they would not expand my refund period to try out the new phone to make sure that one works. To me the CS department at google should be better than this. I am disgusted with google and returning it. I was wondering what I should get to replace this one. The MOTO X or S4 or go to verizon and get the droid maxx. I just wondering since I am off contract.

Thanks.

Moto X would be the closest device to the Nexus. Sucks that it didn't work out for you. But there are so many alternatives that you are likely to find something that will meet your needs. Good luck.

Have nnot tried the moto x. If your considering the S4 why not the note 3. I had the S4 before and the note 3 is much better Imo

Rockin my Note 3

Moto x would be your best bet. Did you try talking to a supervisor at Google? It sounds like you got a defective n5 and if they could get you a replacement quicker, you might stick with it.

Who is your carrier? Also remember that the bars are only indicative of relative signal strength, not absolute. Were your calls actually dropping or were you actually unable to browse or are you just looking at the bars?

Also, Google is doing what manufacturer warranty is supposed to do - replacing your device. Since Google doesn't provide you the service, the service isn't part of their contact with you.

With respect to a replacement device, Moto X is good, and if money isn't a problem, you can try the GPE HTC One or the GS4.

I would also have to say moto x. You can also get a mint used Google Edition HTC One or S4 for a very good price right now.

Moto X! I own an htc one, moto x & nexus 5. If I had to only keep one it would be the moto x. Buttery smooth. Runs chrome faster than ant quad core phone. Active display / notifications spoil you. Plus the almost non existent side bezels make for a great form factor. I prefer the all black with the woven "Kevlar" back. Fantastic Device

I have ATT and I understand that they aren't in charge of the carrier, but when other phones get services and I don't that points to the device. I did try to do a full factory reset and that did not help as well. I either wanted to push back my grace period so I can test the new unit and if that does not work then get a full refund or overnight the phone so I can get a phone that works. I just feel like it is better to jump ship that get trapped in a bad situation with google. In terms of speed I could not hold LTE or HSPA. Many times I would loose signal all together and I could not make calls.

I know it wasn't one of your options but I say the note 3. It's a beast. Lol

I wonder if your APN settings were correct? I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile earlier this year when I got my N4. T-Mobile just didn't work out for me so I switched back to AT&T and since they didn't sell or really support the N4, I had to search the forums and try some different settings to get it to work.

You may just have a bad phone of course and I am sorry you didn't get great service from Google support so I hope you get things worked out. I would, however, search the forums to see what others are doing for setting the N5 up on AT&T.

I would consider the LG G2. A similar phone, but with a larger battery. You'd have to get used to the power button and volume buttons on the back though.

Pretty sweet phone. The screen is..wow. I have to admit though, after checking it out at ATT store as I was leaving I had not felt so dumb in a long time. I kept trying to press the power button on the right side of the phone every single time. haha

i am skeptical that the bad reception is the phone - unless you had a defective unit - which i am also skeptical of.

The Moto X if you want something close to a stock Android experience but with better "always on" functionality and Active Notifications. The customization through Moto Maker doesn't hurt either. :) Other than that, LG G2, Note 3, or HTC One.

I guess that means you are on Verizon. (I kid)

What carrier are you on?

If look and feel matter more, I'd get the Moto X. Great phone, lots of customization, very close to vanilla Android. The CPU is weaker than the S4 and G2, but that will only matter for gaming. On everything else it will be just as fast.

If you want power more, the LG G2. Better specs than the Nexus 5 in every way.

The S4 and Maxx are not bad phones at all. But the Moto X and G2 are better than both of them IMO. The HTC One is a little long in the tooth IMO...if you are going to get that or the S4, make sure you get Google Play Edition versions.

The Note 3 is awesome, but not everyone likes ginormous phones like that.

What's the return policy on the N5 from Google?
Full refund?
Re-stocking fee?

I am hesitant to try one without an option to move to something else.

are you buying on or off contract? To me that is the key question. If you're going to be locked in for 2 years I'd get a more future proof phone like the S4 or G2. The X is already mid-tiered specs wise, with a smallish last generation screen.

I'd get the Maxx over the Moto X. The Maxx is a better phone with a bigger battery and a bigger screen.

I'd be seriously disappointed to go from N5 to Moto X. Moto X doesn't feel flagshippy to me at all. Closest pure google experience yes, but just felt/ looked like a second tier phone to me. Obviously this is very subjective and just my opinion but I feel like the N5 absolutely does feel flagship despite price. I went to grab the X for the wife but comparing to LG G2 or Note or even S4 I saw no comparison. Grabbed G2 and its awesome.. just wish I could delete like 1/2 the crap on it.
