Smartphone OIS video test; HTC One competes well with Nokia Lumia 920 | ZDNet

The HTC One isn't perfect, but it seemed to do a better job at providing more realistic color and clarity than the Lumia 920. My oldest daughter and I were each holding a device, so there are some differences in the person holding it. I actually may have been more shaky than her, given my age, and I had the HTC One in hand.

On top of just recording the video, it was very easy to capture still images while recording on the HTC One, and I was able to make some cool highlight videos after the game as well.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is a fine device with a great camera, but the HTC One does a fair job as well and can compete with the Lumia 920 for video.

With a 4.7in screen that delivers 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, content looks gorgeous. Colours are deep and rich, websites are sharp, clear and easy to read. Video looks superb. The 468ppi sells this handset better than any other feature it offers. If you ever wanted to be a user of Watch, HTC?s bundled video rental and purchase service, this is the ideal screen for it.

Review: HTC One - htc, smartphones - Computerworld

The HTC One has below average battery life. During our tests the 2300mAh battery lasted around 14 hours on average before needing a recharge. While this is better than most previous HTC Android phones, it's still a below average result.

Users with less demanding usage patterns may be able to squeeze a full day out of the battery before needing a recharge but heavy users will likely need to top up the One before the day is out.

As a hotspot once again we have great battery performance. This test consists of four of the page loading tabs running on an attached notebook in addition to 128kbps streaming MP3 audio being played on the device. This is a challenging test that results in the cellular connection being lit up almost constantly, and isolates out display.

My subjective impressions using the HTC One as my personal device are that battery life is quite good, and moreover that the DNA battery life also was better than some other phones people had no problems with in 2012. I have yet to have an issue making it through an entire day on the HTC One, even when aggressively using the camera.

Camera
In the daytime images, what sticks out is that the exposure time is incredibly short, or fast. The result is that the One is incredible at stopping motion outdoors, and this seems to have been HTC?s big priority with tuning the One, rather than pushing noise down even further by going perhaps to ISO 50 like we see the iPhone and LG Optimus G Pro do

.......
Video
The quality of normal 1080p30 video on the HTC One is good, and it doesn?t appear to drop any frames during capture in daylight or outdoors. Also since the bitrate is nice and high, I don?t see any encode artifacts to complain about. I can?t however shake the feeling that it should be a bit sharper. It?s likely that HTC is sampling the sensor at 1080p natively rather than able to request the full sensor output then downsample and encode, which would make the quality of output video even sharper. It?s good it just isn?t mind-blowing outdoors in broad daylight. Switching into video mode also doesn?t result in magnification changing wildly, though it?s obvious there is a bit of a crop going on, but it?s slight, and I suspect to leave some pixels for additional image stabilization reasons.

At night however the One really shines. I put together another comparison video with the One, iPhone 5, and Lumia 920 in side by side to demonstrate the differences in low light behavior.

For the HTC One I'm giving our Editors Choice Gold award, which is our second highest award. The One is an incredibly awesome device.

HTC One (2013) review by peter - gdgt

The One isn't just the best smartphone HTC has ever made -- it can legitimately lay claim to being the best smartphone ever produced by anyone. Beyond a certain point determining what's "best" comes down to matters of personal preference (some people don't like Android or want a smaller screen or absolutely must have a removable battery and memory card slot, etc.), but there's so much that's superlative about the One that it's hard not to walk away incredibly impressed by it. Gadget sites often talk about how Apple sets the bar for device design and the One is one of the very few phones that matches -- and arguably even exceeds -- the iPhone in this area.

The HTC One is the best smartphone I have ever used (review) | ZDNet

"Stunning, elegant, innovative, mind-blowing, gorgeous, loud, beautiful, and fun are just some of the adjectives I could use to describe the HTC One. I have tested hundreds of phones over the years and in my opinion the HTC One is the best-designed phone I have ever used."

HTC One Review | Ubergizmo

The camera user interface is great, all the icons are small and placed directly on top of the image, and not on a black band, unlike other android devices including the Galaxy Note 2. The Xperia Z started this trend by placing the camera icons on a semi-transparent band, although the camera icons in the Sony device are larger than in the HTC. The result is great: the image gets a maximum amount of real estate in the screen, which makes this camera application more agreeable to use (see picture above).

In addition, when shooting with the display in direct sunlight, the image is more visible on the HTC One (IPS) display than on the (Super AMOLED) screen of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Just like the iPhone 5, it is possible to get a different exposure by touching the image on a different area, depending on which area ? bright or dark ? you want to get the more details. This feature is not available in the Galaxy Note 2.

During the week I carried the HTC One, I shot a few pictures under different lighting conditions and I compared it against other high-smartphones such as the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
For the low light test, I added the Nokia Lumia 920 to the equation, since it delivers the best performance when shooting in the dark. The HTC One delivers really good results, especially in low light

Review: HTC One (2013)

Needs work

If it sounds like we?re throwing praise all over this handset, it?s not far off, but there are aspects to the HTC One that could still do with some work.

HTC may have an edge when it comes to design, but there?s an area we disagree with, and that?s the soft buttons at the bottom on the front. While we applaud HTC for finally getting rid of that useless multitasking button, now the HTC logo sits in the centre, with the back button on the left and the home button on the right.

We?re probably not the only ones to think this, but this whole button placement feels silly. You want to press the centre to go home. Every single phone on the market has a home button near the centre, and forcing you to press just to the right of this is odd, and doesn?t feel right at all.

It probably doesn?t help that the soft buttons edge a little too close to the bottom of the touchscreen, and you may find that when clicking the back or the home button, you?re actually pressing something on-screen, especially if you have broader fingertips.
