1. Factory Reset does not erase memory card
2. FR will reset the apps moved to the card, whether or not the card is removed. Android places a "Bookmark" on the phone saying that the app is installed, so the app will not be listed on the phone either way.
3. To root zvj, you must downgrade to either zvh or zvd, but since you want ICS (CM9, in this case) you will want to downgrade to zvd, root with gingerbreak or any of the numerous rooting tools floating around, flash xionia (you could install CWMT, but since it doesn't support the antiquated scripting that some of the other zvd roms are written in, you'd best stick with xionia) then flash CAI.
4. I realize why xionia didn't give you the option to backup. Answer: you're not on xionia- you tried to flash xionia from zvj, which doesn't work, because you accepted the OTA update which automatically unroots you. Thus, you couldn't install a custom recov because you weren't rooted.
5. The reason your apps were there is because the OTA is designed to update your phone without erasing all of your apps
6. Wireless data connection message: I have no idea.
