[ROM] CyanogenMod 7 for Hero CDMA :: V7.0.3 (6 May 2011)

This aosp versions sucks. I have too many problems with it. I'm going to flash again to this rom. I still can't fix my voicemail. These instructions from that link are not clear for me.

The link from your first post doesn't work.
Where is this rom on this list?
CDMA Hero ROMs - XDA-Developers
I would really appreciate step by step instructions how to fix voicemail starting from here. I'm gpoing to reboot to Recovery and wipe everything
like in these instructions
First you need to wipe/format your phone, in clockwork recovery: Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition. Under Partitions menu (or Mounts & Storage in 3.0.0.5) in recovery: Format boot, system, data, cache. Under advanced: wipe Dalvik Cache.
and then flash to this rom, then what?

The link I provided for the voicemail fix takes you to the Wiki created for AOSP hero. You need to Nandroid (backup) your current setup, flash a 2.2 based ROM (Cyanogen and Aosp both provide such a ROM, look on XDA or Here for it), install the Voicemail App provided on the Wiki page, use Titanium Backup to backup the app and data for Voicemail, restore your backup ROM then restore the Voicemail app and data. That should get it working.

If you don't want to deal with the workaround, then I'd suggest flashing a 2.2 based ROM and install it straight onto that. You won't have to deal with the workarounds and your phone will still perform very well.

Google Voice is a good workaround to have voicemail. You will need to create an account and obtain a number, but you'll have access to your voicemail regardless of which ROM you are using since all you need is to download the app and follow the instructions to setup. Plus the added benefit of getting email and text alerts, included a transcribe of the voicemail. Just an FYI for people looking for a good voicemail alternative.

Just a quick note on Google Voice vs Sprint's Visual Voicemail. One of the great features of Visual Voicemail is the ability to send a voice message as you might send a picture or a text message. Google Voice doesn't replace this feature. Also, some sort of internet access is still needed for Google Voice where as Visual Voicemail stores it all locally. It might not seem like a big deal until you are in an area with poor service or on a plane and can't turn your phone on. The flip side is of course that Google Voice is available from any computer with internet access which is an advantage over Visual Voicemail if you work in an office where cell phone usage is frowned upon, your phone battery is dead, or if you drop your phone in the toilet. =/

@Tre_03 Those are some well taken points. I never really though about that deeply and I'd have to say that It's something to consider. Having voicemail stored locally does make a big difference. I guess the ability to receive text messages or email as voicemail notification makes Voice good to have. Like everything Android, there are pros and cons to using the many options we have available :)

I'm not stupid. I just can't find that Nandroid thing and I just don't understand how to perform these instructions.

There are two ways to perform a nandroid backup/restore:

1. ROM Manager
-Go into ROM Manger
-Scroll down to Backup and Restore
-Backup saves the exact current state of your phone (data, apps, ROM, texts, etc.)
-Restore lets you restore any of your backups

2. Recovery
-Reboot into Recovery
-Go to Backup and Restore
-Same as ROM Manager

These are what are being referred to when people talk about nandroid.

I don't think anyone was criticizing your competence. If you took my earlier post as such, then I apologize for it. Just sounds like you don't want to deal with the headache's of finding workarounds for certain parts of the ROM or features originally offered by Sprint that were meant for the stock OS, not custom ROMs like CM7 or aosp.

@Chef, thank you for the clarification.

ok but still where is that Nandroid?

Follow the steps posted by @Chef to make a backup in recovery. When you select Backup and Restore, you'll see at the top of the screen "Nandroid" in white. Below you should see the options for backup, restore or advanced restore. Nandroid is the term used when creating a backup of your current system. From what I understand, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, "Nandroid" is a script that creates a backup of your phone, or a snapshot if you will. Whoever created the script gave it the name Nandroid.

Can You please explain that Voicemail part?
If I understand that right, then I should restore to my stocked rom which I have backed up a week ago. Then I shoulddownload Titanium Backup and backup stock voicemail app which hopefullu save some data about me and then install this rom, install Titanium Backup and restore that voicemail app.
So what is this Sprint VVM Edify ? I didn't see anything like it.
Last thing. I was testing this asop version for a week and too many calls went to my voicemail with no notice that I was called. Offcourse there might be also calls from people that didn't leave voicemail.
How to fix that problem?
Now I'm going to install this version. I hope that my "calling/voicemail" error will be fixed.

No. I think you made a backup of CM7, which is Android 2.3. You need to install Android 2.2, either CM6 or aosp. Here is a link to download CM6: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...-0-rc1-hero-cdma-v6-1-0-rc1-10-28-2010-a.html

Yes. After you have installed CM6 (2.2) and have it setup, install the sprint visual voicemail. You can get a copy of the app here: Install Sprint Visual Voicemail - ROMRepo

Download the "Edify Version" found under Method I. App is towards the end of Method I. You can search XDA for the Visual Voicemail.apk if you want to try and find the regular app. I'm not sure what the difference is. I'd suspect the edify version is a modded version tweaked to work.

I havn't experienced this so I'm not sure. I can only say that maybe you were in a poorly receptive area and signal prevented you from receiving the call. This happens if you are out of coverage and you receive a call. The caller will be directed straight to voicemail and you will not be noticed unless they leave a message.

I have backed up my real stock rom. So is this ok? Should I check what version I got?
I don't think I have poor reception. It's always like that. Now it's just even worse than before.

I'm not 100% sure that it will work with the Stock ROM. I would suspect so, but you never know. Give it a try. Otherwise you may need to do the 2.2 ROM.

but if I don't want to play so Google Voice is my other(simple) option?
just to install and wait for voicemails?

With Google Voice, you sign up and receive a phone number. To set it up on your phone, follow the on screen prompts via the web that walk you through the sign-up process. You'll be asked to call a number which will provision your phone to forward the calls to the new google voice number.

People can still call your sprint number and you'll receive the call like normal. Except, when they get your voicemail they'll hear, "the google voice subscriber is unavailable..." you can customize the greeting like any other voicemail.

You can then download the google voice app to your phone and manage the voicemail. You'll have the option to be alerted via email, text message, or both. Voicemails are transcribed (if the message if clear) and will be emailed to you.

You don't ever have to give out your new google voice number unless you want to. People usually use it as a second number for business related things, or forums sales through craigslist, etc. Basically, if you don't want someone to have your personal number, then give them the google voice number. That's how I think of it. There is a video on the google voice page that shows you a little about the service. check it out and see if it's for you. Whenever you switch ROMs you'll just have to download the voice app and complete the setup to get it up and running again. Nothing compared to the sprint app workarounds.

ok, I tried to do this wkole procedure with voicemail, and no, it's still doesn't work.

:( I know of no other option, other than the two provided on the WiKi Page, to get the app to work so you may need to switch to a 2.2 ROM if it's a deal breaker. The problem occurs with both AOSP and CM7 2.3 ROMs.
