ROM Installation Handbook

Alright one last question, not sure if this is explained anywhere as there is a lot to cover in these threads and I'm going crazy bouncing around..

Alright first, I did a backup of my Froyo DK28/rooted with ROM manager with ClockworkMod Recovery.

Now I want to check out some ROM's. So I flash a ROM. Then say I want to go onto a different ROM or go back to my stock Froyo DK28/rooted how do I go about changing from one ROM to another without problems?

I'm rooted, did a backup, have ClockworkMod Recovery installed, Titanium Backup and also ROM Manager so I have all the required and frequently used programs you all mention on here.

Sorry if I'm getting repetitive here, just want to know ahead of time so I know the right steps to take so I don't lockup/brick and have to go back to Stock Recovery.

There really is no going back, only forward. Follow Section II (Step 2 only needs to be done once, have 1 backup minimum) to get the ROM onto your phone. If you want to go back to a previous ROM, follow Section II again using the zip from that previous ROM. If you want to go back to stock Froyo, same deal - follow Section II (stock Froyo zip).

how exactly do i get my setting, data, and apps back? i didn't think it would erase everything i had set up or i wouldn't have done it. installed quantum 2.0 just fine but now i have no apps, no email, and all my settings are screwed.

You can selectively restore the backup you made in Clockwork. Boot into Clockwork, go to backup and restore, advanced restore, and restore data. If you have problems when you boot up after that, just go back into Clockwork and install the ROM again WITHOUT wiping or doing a factory reset to overwrite anything that's causing the problems.

Or you can do what I do - put the settings back manually, re-download your apps from the Market and re-enter your email accounts in Settings.

There is Titanium Backup and also the Restore option in Clockwork if you did your backup as you should when switching ROMs.

Here is also a thread from a while back concerning this issue, Restore settings after Froyo update.

As far as settings go really the best safe way to avoid conflicts, and FC (forced closings) is to manually redo them.

Also now with the Android Setup Wizard, it restores everything for you automatically. This option is now used when you load up the stock Froyo DK28 leak for the first time when you sign into Google. Most of the newest ROM's are now using this feature. TrulyEpic v2.06.12.10, is one that is using this option.

Hope this helps.

I used Titanium backup. although i didn't really understand how the app worked. i just found the "Batch" menu so i think i've got it now.

Okay, so I am trying to boot Cyanogen Mod 6.1 for the Epic via Clockwork Mod, and can't find the .zip file at all. The 3 folders seem to be separated. Am I supposed to group them into one folder?

I'm not sure what you mean by 3 folders - just place the .zip at the root of your SD card and select it while in Clockwork.

Well when I just copy the folders from WinZIP onto my SD card, I really can't tell which one contains the .zip file itself. Unless I'm doing something wrong, which is obvious.

Why can't the ROM Chefs provide a self extracting self rooting file?

If Z4 can root/install super user and undo with a single click- why not go the full distance and include Clockwork Mod and a Rom too? I wouldn't care if I had to download a 1gb zip file from XDA to my SD- if I could single click and have the programs do their magic without having to follow a 20 step list of things to do in a specific order- you'd have BOATLOADS of happy rooters in minutes.

I don't want to hack/flash/wipe/restore all day...and quite frankly neither does anyone else... yet I never see anyone pursue this- my question is WHY?

One N00B question as I also just joined the android bandwagon after spending time over in Precentral... I just rooted my stock sprint eclair (w/ ClockWorkMod) and noticed in your guide that you suggest upgrading to Stock Froyo using Odin before installing any custom roms. Is this step considered necessary or can I just use clockworkmod to install custom froyo Rom's? I didn't know if kernal versioning issues or other things would interfere and partially brick my Epic.

Thanks in advance for the support!

The simplest answer would be: focusing on making everything overly user-friendly would distract cooks/devs from working on innovations and improvements to their ROMs and kernels. But once you get the familiar with all this, it becomes much easier.

Clockwork does not install the Froyo modem, which is required for Froyo ROMs. Odin is required to install said modem, which is why I put that step in the guide. Once you make the jump from Eclair to Froyo with a correctly installed modem via Odin, you can then use Clockwork to install Froyo ROMs.

Thanks for the prompt response! Will have to install this one via Odin first thing.

I just installed the Bonzai ROM 1.0.4. It's keen.
My question is (since I had some difficulty getting the ROM to install) how detrimental would it be to install a ROM here, a ROM there.... just every so often to see what they look like and how they function? with clockwork, is it as simple as installing from the .zip file?

I backup my jazz first.
Install a new ROM.
Then restore what I backed up to get all my settings back?

A new topic suggestion

I was trying to figure out this Odin vs Clockwork thing. I think it may be a good idea to have a thread with definitions run by the moderators so the new users (such as myself) could go to a single thread and find out what ROM means to a phone, what flashing is, what is Odin, what is Touchwiz... etc. Just a though

I flash ROMs weekly if not every few days. And you are correct - just flash the zip of the ROM in Clockwork and restore apps using the backup you've made.

It's pretty simple - Clockwork (which uses .zip format) is your main flashing tool that you will use to switch ROMs, kernels and themes.

Odin (which uses .pit and .tar formats) is only used to recover a bricked phone, return to a completely stock state or update your modem when a software update is released by Samsung/Sprint.

I followed these awesome instructions from a stock Epic 4G, and it worked great. I installed the Stock Froyo DK28 as outlined in III.A.4, and then installed the latest TrulyEpic ROM using ClockworkMod Recovery. Everything works great, except my GPS and compass are toast. Compass shows N when pointing due south, and GPS picks up 0 sats when outside with a clear view of the sky. Any suggestions?

I have had a hell of a time with this. For some reason, Lookout didn't back up any of my contacts so...there's that...and when I boot it still says I'm running Android 2.1. I can't tell if there's any difference. I'm usually really good at stuff like this but the DK28 rom was in a rar or tar file...so that didn't show up...so I unzipped and rezipped in a .zip format...and it shows up in the clockwork browser but I don't think it actually installed.
What the heck am I doing wrong?
