Root Droid Bionic on Jelly Bean for dummies. In plain as plain english gets

What version are you using (ICS or JB)? Once you type ifconfig look at the device that is wireless...than set your phone as shown...if you do not see the remote storage under files you need to update to JB first.

I was just going through all the questions and it just clicked in my head. You're right nitehawk79, yes this tutorial is when you get JB and lose root. And also you decide after JB that you want root. ICS doesn't give you the remote storage option

I renamed my smb.conf file to smb.conf.old and then copied the renamed file to smb.conf. I then edited the new smb.conf file making the changes that you indicated. I setup the guest account. The trouble began when I opened the phone's files folder (under apps - is that where to find it) and selected remote storages. The remote storages section would not let me modify or input the ip address and other info you said should be put in that area. My phone has USB debugging enabled. When I connected the phone, the computer started the samba daemon, identified my device, started rooting, got an error message that installation of Superuser.apk failed because it was already installed and then later another message, /system/bin/sh: /storage/rfs0/pwn: not found. The rooting program said to hit any hardward button on the phone and wait for phone to vibrate, which it never did. I finally, exited the rooting exploit. Bottom line, phone functions fine, but is not rooted. Any thouhts about what I could try at this time? Thanks for all of your work on this tutoral and f/u as others have replied to your work.

Sorry about the late reply but I don't think I can understand. When you open phone's files folder you get 5 options. Like the screenshot I put up. They are device storage, SD card, remote storages, favorites and recent. There's no apps option. After you hit files you hit remote storages and then you put your info in. And don't connect your phone with USB until you connect to remote storages. Once you're connected to remote storages and log in, you'll see the files including su.apk. At this point you connect with USB and enter the command into the terminal to start the process. I also tried to look into that path on my own Bionic. /system/bin/sh: /storage/rfs0/pwn. It's not on my Bionic either. Theres no such path. And what does f/u mean lol. I was thinking is he thanking me or telling me off? Lol!!!

It won't let me restart smbd
Pls help

If you followed all the instructions the exact way and you're at this point and you can't restart samba, the most probable cause is user error. Please double check everything from step #1. If you miss even one space or character in the terminal or put something extra by accident I don't know what it'll do to this process. The whole process most likely will fail.

Thank you for your great instructions.

Thank you for the feedback. You can use Titanium Backup to put the su.apk into the system or use Root Explorer. With Root Explorer go to /data/app and look for su.apk. Then move it to /system/app and you're done.

Ok, everything works perfectly until I get to the part of connecting my phone to the network share. Can't do it. I've coppied and pasted all commands so I don't think it's user error. Is there maybe something in my router that I have to change to get the phone to connect properly? Had root and lost it with a factory reset. Thanks

No you don't change anything on the router. As long as the computer and phone are on the same network you're good to go. And enter the correct ip and password.

At step 18 when I execute the run script in the ubuntu terminal, I hit a button on my phone like the guide says and nothing happens. I have tried it multiple times and it does nothing.

Can you root the phone and have it working on PagePlus? I have an Bionic which was flashed to PagePlus, then I did an OTA to JB, had it reflashed, but now only get data. I was thinking maybe I should root it but don't know if it would still work on PP?

What does the terminal say? When the files are being injected and cleaning up etc. it tells you what's going on. And at the end it'll say press any hard button to clean up and exit. Any errors?

Flashing a phone to a different carrier is a whole different process. Rooting just gets you root level control of the phone like access to the system. When you flash to another carrier you use bp tools in factory recovery to change your imei and prl numbers. And change the radio to cdma only because i guess pageplus doesn't have 4g. If you're comfortable doing these things on this tutorial you can do the flash to pageplus yourself. It is complicated and i'll warn you that if you screw anything up it'll most likely brick the phone. The things on this tutorial will not brick the phone. I looked around and here's a couple of links that will guide you with that process. I did a speed read through both and they're both similar.

1. On your computer you're going to ubuntu.com and you're going to download the ubuntu operating system and here's the link. Don't worry nothing gets installed on your computer. Download Ubuntu Desktop | Ubuntu . Make sure you pick the 13.04 version for the 32 bit. That's very important. 64 bit version can't do this.

My system runs Windows 7 64 bit. Are you saying I won't be able to root?

Yes you can root. There are 2 versions of Ubuntu. 32 and 64. You have to use the 32 bit version of Ubuntu on your 64 bit computer. My Dell is also Windows 7 64 bit.

Having trouble when it gets to the remote storage part. Every time I try to add storage it says the information I entered is incorrect.
Would it be the fact that I'm using a desk top to do this?

That doesn't matter as long as the desktop and phone are on the same network

got an error message that installation of Superuser.apk failed because it was already installed and then later another message, /system/bin/sh: /storage/rfs0/pwn: not found.

Droid Bionic | v4.1.2

I have attempted to follow these great instructions several times (since some folks say that it takes a few times to work). I am able to connect to Samba with my phone and can see the share files. Then I run sudo ./run.sh and the root process proceeds. After the first attempt, I started getting the same results as m_vrik, which I show below:

Code:
...
4443 KB/s (1578585 bytes in 0.346s)
	[COLOR="#FF0000"]pkg: /data/local/tmp/Superuser.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_ALREADY_EXISTS][/COLOR]

[COLOR="#FF0000"]/system/bin/sh: /storage/rfs0/pwn: not found[/COLOR]
[+] Please press any hardware button on your phone.
...

However; after getting the two errors above a few times, I started getting only the first in subsequent attempts, and the second error seems to have gone away:

Code:
...
4478 KB/s (1578585 bytes in 0.344s)
	[COLOR="#FF0000"]pkg: /data/local/tmp/Superuser.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_ALREADY_EXISTS][/COLOR]

I am wondering if the Superuser.apk already exists error will prevent the rooting process from working? I don't know how to delete the file from my phone so that the error will go away.

Do you think that if I keep running the exploit the root will finally take?

Thanks for the post!

Having trouble getting computer to connect to WiFi while using Ubuntu. We've logged in to the network using Windows just to verify the password but for some reason, the password won't work in Ubuntu....it won't connect and keeps going back to the password screen. Any suggestions?
