Root Droid Bionic on Jelly Bean for dummies. In plain as plain english gets

I filled out your stuff, went to the site, and now I can't get the proper software?
Also i'm wondering if I can just save the software to the computer and not make a disk? (no viable disks or $)

At the time when I did this tutorial the latest version was 13.04. Try Google searching ubantu 13.04 and you'll find it. And also you have to burn it on disk and install to a partition on your hard drive because this is an operating system.

Linux VM under Native Linux not needed!
I describe how it can be done under native Linux for us Penguinista's a bit more directly over on XDA:
xda-developers - View Single Post - Easy Root for Bionic Stock 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean)

Still, why would the run.sh script kill-server at the beginning? Seems like all the following adb commands would fail. I skipped that as I manually ran the subsequent commands from the script until I had to use the Samba connection to run pwn on the Bionic from the Linux file share - guess that is the magic touch for the exploit - i.e. Samba's (v2) less-than-perfect (features AND bugs) Windows networking opens a hole in Vzw's anti-user-control armor, eh?

To be clear, I really do appreciate your effort, Nuwan. The Samba instructions (drop those dashes in front of the user and share names, ok?) helped me get past the main hurdle with specifics I could work with. Samba on Linux had always been a challenge for me because I have tried to grok the whole concept for wide-spread comprehensive use instead of being able to follow to-the-point steps for a simple task like this. :)

It seems the original instructions, along with the credit to the original dev who discovered this exploit has been left in the dust.
I'd love to see some thanks to Dan the Man, or something along the lines of credit due.
Glad to see people making it easier for the other users though. :)

This was done using the only exploit available at the time using Dan's method. I only simplified it so any noob can do it!

13.04 is no longer available...believe it's 13.10....running it off a usb...Right before step 8 it ask s for conformation..then rejects what it's trying to do...gone through the process numerous times to make sure I'm not making a mistake..any input would b great...ithanks
Have looked for the previous versions ..downloaded a few..but none r bootable so far ..for me anyway

(Note: rooted in April using Easy Root method. Methods are essentially the same so should work with the "for dummies' instructions.)
Finally! Success! I didn't doubt the method, but I wonder why it didn't work for me. After multiple failures using the factory wipe so the procedure could root a fresh phone I finally ran RSDLite5.7 and through the fastboot menu replace the install image with cdma_targa_9.8.2O-72_VZW-22_cfc.xml.zip. After doing that the root procedure worked the first time.
Thanks for this one.

So this method would have worked IF I didn't have virtual box issues. Just as easily get and download ubuntu and burn it to a DVD...... so you can reboot into ubuntu and not have anykind of driver issues whatsoever.
Go to this link below NOW!

I USED 32 BIT UBUNTU 14.04 LTS

I DOWNLOADED THE .ISO FROM UBUNTU.COM
BURNED THE ISO TO DVD
REBOOTED AND LOADED UBUNTU THIS LINK HELPED ALSO (How to Root the Droid Bionic on Jelly Bean 4.1.2 - YouTube)
GOT ERROR MESSAGES WHEN TRYING "sudo apt-get install samba"
So I went to the software center and installed samba from there, still had error messages
So I went back to try "sudo apt-get install samba" and it worked this time
I was then able to connect from the bionic to the shared files from there it worked grea

You can use Titanium Back Up or use Root Explorer. On Root Explorer mount system read/write and goto /data/app. Then move Su.apk to /system/app and you're done.

I download the ubuntu to a disc via roxio but when i did the shutdown with disc in it only comes back with an icon in the lower right hand window for roxio telling me to insert new disk...is this because i am on windows 8?

This is an outdated post, i'm sorry but there is an easier way to root the Droid Bionic. Google search VRoot and download the tool on your computer. It's a one click method so run it and connect your Bionic and done. If you run into problems or have any questions i'll be more than happy to answer them, just ask. Good luck and enjoy your Bionic!

Ok i downloaded vroot hit run asked to extract, hit extract. converted it to another file but won't open. what app do I need to use to open the file? is the problem that I am running on windows 8.1? do you have any suggestions for that?

You shouldn't have to extract anything. When you Google search and download it, it'll give you an icon on your desktop. Double click that to run the tool. Then connect phone and click the big green button. Btw everything on the tool is in Chinese. You can use something like Google translate to read it or just connect phone and click the button. There are also other one click tools to root Bionics! Motochopper, motofail, razr blade, motoroot, and towel root. Hope this helps!

ok i was able to find an updated version of vroot,it is now called iroot. Got my phone rooted. Now what do I need to do I went to root explorer but don't see how to switch superuser.

Easiest way is to use Titanium Backup Root. Once you open the app and it populates the list of apps on the phone click super user and advanced options and it'll give you the option to make it a systems app.

Or on root explorer go to /data/app and look for super user.apk. Then move the apk to /system/app.
