[Root] Epic 4G Froyo & Eclair ClockworkMod v3.0.2.5 Switch Between RFS & EXT4

I guess I was just curious as to whether or not if I installed the conversion I would then be able to swithc between the ext4 roms I have and the EE03 without the need to use odin anymore.
Unfortunately no, see my response above.. I figured that was what you were getting at.

Isn't there a script to convert back to RFS? I thought I saw "ReRFS" something or other over on XDA.

Correct there is, I know it was designed to be used originally with EC05 and CWM 3.0.0.6. I have no idea what affect and how it will work when attempting to convert from EE03/Gingerbread and CWM 3.0.2.5.

Hey guys,

Rooted my fianc?e's phone with the OneClick 3.0.2.5, and all seemed well. Phone booted, superuser installed, etc. But then - when she rebooted and tried to get into the recovery... Stuck on Samsung screen, nothing doing. Won't boot, won't enter recovery.

Cable and port are fine, I rooted mine with the 3.0.0.6 on the same cable and port (also an Epic, of course).

So what's the dilly? On XDA, I see that this is an issue for some, and Odin is the method to get back your shizzle.

BUT, I also saw drockstar mention a method in Heimdall wherein you can extract part of the CWM zip and flash just the recovery.

We tried to put the zImage in Kernel and Recovery in Heimdall, but neither worked.

Any thoughts or advice?

If his method didn't cut it then I suggest Odin back and attempt root again or you can use the Bonsai Master Key to root and install CWM. The Bonsai CWM has all the same benefits of CWM 3.0.2.5 with some added bug fixes according to Randy T of Bonsai.

Ended up doing Odining back to EC05 stock, not sure what happened with the OneClick root for 3.0.2.5. Heimdall no worky for sure.

Losing App data was a pain for my fianc?e, but once I got it back to stock it was a breeze to OneClick the 3.0.0.6, throw SRF 1.1.1 on there for her and show her how to run a Nandroid backup once she was where she wanted to be her apps and such.

She only hesitated to use SRF early on because she hates App Drawers that are one vertical list - she wanted a horizontal scroll (no, she isn't an iPhone user, never has been!). Go Launcher fixed that for her - that team (Go) is full of win. SMS app rocks, launcher is extremely nice.

When flashing the different file sysytems do you have to do any kind of data or cashe wipes?

If your flashing a ROM then yes you always wipe all data/cache/dalvik unless directed by dev.

If you flashing a theme, then only wipe cache/dalvik

Anything else normally is a no wipe unless stated, add ons, apps, kernels, etc..

Using CWM to backup?

Question is if I flash CWM 3.0.2.5 with my current setup>EC05, rooted with CWM 2.xxx> Backup my current state with CWM , then switch file systems and or roms. Will I be able to use the backup before the switch to restore all my settings< contacts, email, apps, ect> with out the file system or rom reverting to pre flash? Say I flash the Froozen rom then restore via backup, will it stay on the Froozen rom? Or will using the pre rom and or file system backup revert my phone to its original state <EC05, rooted with CWM 2.xxx?

Whewww
TIA

The way things get so sensitive at times your best option is as follows.

Use Titanium Backup or MyBackup Root from the Market to backup data and apps. You can also use SMS Backup and Restore to backup texts... (I highly recommend this SMS Backup and Restore, least chance of restore conflicts).

When you do make the switch to EXT4 filesystem from RFS it is best to redownload manually the apps or if you restore from TB or MBR then first do the app restore, make sure everything is okay after restoring apps (no conflicts or FC's arise) then reboot and go back in and slowly start to restore DATA only. This seems for me to be the least chance of conflicts. It seems if you choose to do both APP and Data restore all in one shot you end up with some sort of problems.

Restoring a CWM backup from RFS to EXT4 will not work or if it does actually restore there will probably be issues since its two different file systems. But if you decide at a later date to go back to RFS or vise versa you can use your CWM backup's to restore for the proper filesystem. Example CWM backup for RFS, use only on RFS. EXT4 backup, use only on EXT4.

Basically its a cat and mouse game playing with data restores, etc. and can cause troubles at times so be prepared if needed to do a full wipe in CWM and have to start over. Emails and contacts are stored on Google so no problems there and you can always export your contacts list to you sd card and import it back as another backup option...

Hope this helps answer some of your questions, just take things slow and throw in an occasional reboot now and then during restores if doing a lot to give the device a chance to settle things in before throwing to much at it at once...

thanks for the reply Paul,So it sounds like it would best to start from a clean slate when switching file systems or rom's? If I do switch to EXT4 I will have to run a rom made for EXT4 right? So the CWM 3025 just nallows you to switch file systems via .zip files, without using odin?
What do I need to wipe when switching systems or roms, its in CWM under data wipe right'?
Thanks again, sorry for so many questions.

Yes all your ROM flashing, etc.. is done in CWM. Always wipe 3x data/cache/dalvik before flashing a ROM unless otherwise stated.

Themes, wipe 3x cache/dalvik only...

Everything else just flash no wipe unless stated.

When you do go to EXT4, you need to run a ROM designed for EXT4 or it won't flash.

Fsecure detected DroidRooter.B on unzipping OneClickRootCWM3.0.2.5-EC05.zip, is the file referencing "rageagainstthecage." ..?

OK sorry I went back to pg1 and it looks like Samsung uses RFS.. if I change to EXT4 any problems going back to stock with Odin3....?

OK "READ THE TREAD" ... i see in your "info" (which is very good).. going back is ok but would I need to convert files back to RFS first...? Main issue is to confirm the Rage file in zip is ok

I blame my 6 posts previous - on today's TV shows (which I don't watch), and the shows designed for short attention spans.. trouble with continuity today..

@kevanfl1,

To answer your question. Turn off your virus scanner while doing the rooting process.

Delete out the rooting zip you downloaded, turn off your virus scanner and redownload the rooting zip. Extract it and then run the .bat file as instructed without your virus scanner. That will get it done. The rageagainstthecage is listed as an exploit but it is harmless. It will not infect or do anything to your computer and is needed to root your device.

Your default filesystem is RFS. Once you convert to EXT4, you can safely return to RFS (complete stock) by using Odin and one of the provided Odin packages to return to stock form.
