[Root] Epic 4G Froyo & Eclair ClockworkMod v3.0.2.5 Switch Between RFS & EXT4

Still not sure

Ok I go to the xda thread listed and read the instructions=
CWM 3.0.2.5 UPGRADE WITH RFS AND EXT4 SUPPORT!

Please note: some people have had the samsung recovery appear after this flash, and in my testing, in some circumstances, the stock kernel can actually flash back the stock recovery. Due to this, I highly recommend that anyone flashing the new cwm with this flash, please also flash my clean kernel, located here: Clean Kernel EC05 1.03d thread Also note, that the one click version of this should not have this problem, since it takes away the ability of the stock kernel to flash the samsung recovery.

http://drockstar.devphone.org/EpicTools/cwm3.0.2.5.zip

Flash this with your current ClockworkMod to be upgraded!

Notes:

* This flashes bml8 kernel only, this kernel is stripped of bloat, for minimal file size

* 3 finger boot required to enter the bml8 recovery from power off

* Key assignments: vol up/down= up/down, camera button= enter, back cap key= back
hehe: has mkasick keyboard patch, so thumbing is faster!!!

* Full restores of backups done from prior cwm versions may not be possible. Do backup and restore > advanced > {choose backup} > and selectively restore the partitions you need.

* Once new backups are performed, those backups can be restored to *either* rfs or ext4.

* Now backup and restore includes both the kernel and recovery too

* Use in conjunction with my Clean Kernel, for ROM Manager support, other kernels will soon follow suit:
Clean Kernel EC05 1.03d thread

I thought it was just a CWM upgrade? why does it say it flashes a kernel? Am I missing something or just ignorant? I have rooted my phone but am not experianced with ROMs yet.
TIA

@Dug, they are recommending you download and flash the Clean Kernel in CWM because it was built/optimized for this version of CWM. So after completing your rooting process then flash the kernel and all should be okay.

Ok I am allready rooted EC05, If I flash this kernel will I lose my data and do I need to wipe?
I also take it this kernel is flashable through CWM via .zip?

Kernels, no wipe necessary so no data loss :) Just flash in CWM same way as you do a ROM but no wipe on kernels.

Thanks for your reply Paul.

Has anyone done this this flash with the kernel and if so hows it working? It doesnt remove TW does it? I like the TW launcher.

No this will not remove Touch Wiz launcher. This is simply rooting your device and flashing the optional kernal as recommended. Removal of TW Launcher would be of the users option to remove manually or if flashing a ROM that has it removed by the dev.

Ok so I kind of figured out what I am doing altogether now, but I am still having trouble with my terminal not being able to locate this folder, so I get that I would need to type : cd OneClickRootCWM3.1.0.1-CE05 and then enter right? But when I do that it say no file or directory found" Can I simply change the name of the folder maybe to make it easier to find? Pleas help!

Jesse, have you considered trying this.. Its done by Bonsai ROMs but once its completed you should be able to run any ROMs using the Bonsai custom CWM that is installed. Its basically what the newer CWM's (purple, etc.) are based from.

Bonsai MasterKey ROOT and CWM/Recovery Tool

Just take a few minutes to register at Bonsai site, its free and then you can grab the Linux/MAC version and that should take care of everything for ya ... Let me know how it works out.

Thanks for this quick tip! I will try this tonight! When i first was in the market for an Epic through Craigslist, one guys tried to sell me an Epic rooted with Bonsai, and i thought to myself, if its not Cyanogen I dont want it, but his phone kept getting the Google Application error message while i was playing with the phone so I didnt buy it, but if you are telling me that this will get me root access and let me add another rom ( Cyanogen 7 ) then I am in! I thanked you BTW

Jessie, yes this will get you rooted and CWM installed. Then u can flash what you like from there. I would highly consider givin Bonsai 4.1.1 a shot too. I've been running it for about a month or so and its really solid. I think the issue that guy was having you mentioned was due to something he did to cause it.

Trust me I don't push unreliable ROMs on anyone. If its not stable enough for me then its not good enough to suggest for anyone else. ( my opinion )

Hey Paul,

Trust me I am taking this ROM as my first test into the rooted Epic world... now if you can.. tell me how this Bonsai thing works.. I am @ work and cant look at it, but is it as easy as like a 1 click root thing? Does it take a long time? Sorry but I am anxious to get this baby going!!

Oh and by the way once I am rooted I have free wifi tether correct?

Yes the Bonsai Master Key Unlocker which does the Rooting is a very simple application. For me it was just like installing a regular application in Windows. I'm sure its setup the same way in Mac OS. Literally a few clicks to accept the application and get it going and plug in your phone as instructed by the application. Few minutes later all done. Rooted and CWM installed.

Yes when completed with the rooting process you can goto this thread below and setup your Wireless Tethering.. FOR FREE :p

Thanks Paul, you are the only one that took the time to answer a few simple questions and I highly appreicated!

I am just curious as to wether some roms take advantage of the keyboard... ? Meaning like for cool mods or something like that..

Not really other than searching for custom themes that have a themed swype board...

Not problem on the questions either.. Thats my job and thats why I'm here..

Paul.... just curious maybe I'm missing something... what makes Bonsai a great rom over stock? I don't see any visual changes or anything that stands out. ..? Am I missing something? And they went with the worst launcher...

There should be a change log on Bonsai's website with the ROM features.

If you want visual changes, then you need to flash a theme. Take a look at the Froyo mod sticky or theme threads in this forum for download links.
