Before I looked at your link, Towel Root was what I was going to suggest. As long as your kernel date (Settings/General/About device/Kernel) is earlier than June 3, 2004, it will work. (If not, it won't cause any problem, it will just tell you that it can't root the phone.)

To back things up, try Safestrap. I don't ever want a phone without something like that again. (I flashed a keyboard as a ROM. You can guess how well the phone liked that. I restarted into Safestrap, deleted that slot, set the original slot back as active and had my phone back - it took about 2 minutes.) You can back up, flash a new ROM in a different slot to try it out without losing your current setup, back up your current setup before trying something that may take hours to undo, etc.
 
Keep checking the XDA forum for that model until someone finds an exploit.
