[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EB13 w/Optional EXT4

Perhaps it's referring to this method, which gives you EB13 w/ClockworkMod3 preloaded.

Thanks Rag. On the Syndicate first post, it's basically a CWM3 zip file, but they also provide odin and PIT file so I think it's just for CWM3/EXT4 conversion after getting to EB13 with odin. But the post you provided seems to do all in one shot. Do you think this is just fine to use to flash syndicate or ACE roms? Just wanted to make sure to keep from having any problems.

I'm assuming it doesn't really matter how you get to EB13 rooted with EXT4 as long as you get there.

Your assumption is correct. The all-in-one is more for people who are not yet on EB13, whereas the procedure in this thread is useful for those already on EB13 and who don't want their system wiped, have an aversion to Odin or just plain like seeing the step-by-step of how this crazy stuff works :)

Just want to check with you experts :)

I'm still very much a noob...... :-[

I've been reading the threads and I think I want to attempt this later tonite (or tomorrow) if I have time. Can someone look over my bullet list please to make sure I'm going to do this right? :) Steps A and A1 are where my paranoia is kicking in....

Start: On DK28 EXT4 rooted with midNIGHT v3.1. I want to go official Froyo so I can keep updated with the ROMs support and such.

A: Save contacts, calendar, etc via export from list, or mybackup root, or titanium pro. Probably do a full system backup with those apps too (because I'm paranoid). Copy my SD contents to my computer (again, paranoid). :D

A1: How do I do a nandroid backup? I've read a bunch of stuff and still don't understand it. And if I mess up trying to upgrade my phone and want to revert back to my system exactly the way it is now, restoring a nandroid lets me do that? (and how do I restore that)? I read this thread and I'm worried I won't be able to get my phone back to how it is now:

Warning for those of you using CWM 3.X and Experimenting with ROMs

B: Once I'm backed up, get myself rooted onto Stock EB13 Deodexed EXT4 + CW 3.0.0.6 per the thread below. I understand this will wipe my phone (better to start off clean, right?) which is why I want to have everything backed up correctly.

Froyo EB13 Pre-Rooted, Deodexed, with Clockwork - RFS & EXT4

C: Unplug phone(?), reboot in CW3 (volume down+camera+power buttons?). Once in CW3, do I need to 3x wipe or is the odin flash above sufficent enough?

D:
Flash midNIGHT 4.2 from my SD card.

E. Get my apps reinstalled via a master restore list on App Brain. Restore some data bit by bit (Contacts, Calendar, Angry Birds, Alchemy, etc) from Titanium Pro and hope no conflicts.

Other question: If my GPS decides to not work and I want to do Procedure 4 (the manufacturer's reset), will that affect my ROM? Should I check if my GPS is working as soon as I boot into midNIGHT before I do anything restorewise?

Am I forgetting anything?

Thanks! :)

ERRor message cannot root

I keep getting this message

rageagainst thecage-arm5.bin is missing

that piece shows up in my original download but it will not show up when I need to root my EPIC.

I use also the winzip and I get this message as well to why it will not root

Extracting rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
File was blocked, user selected to cancel processing
Interrupted by user.

I have no Idea what happened ... as far as I know I didn't stop any process I just need to root this thing HELP???

so then I should delete all downloads and then start from scratch ( with the rooting files)

Yes the rageinthecage is probably showing up now in your virus scan ever since the exploit was discovered.

Disable your antivirus during install and it should go...

This is not working ... i'm about spent on this project how would I just start from scratch? I am running the froyo EB13 (had the dk28) and I'm on windows 7 norton and trend micro are both disabled now.

Your using Winzip? Try either WinRar or 7zip, both are free and see if you can get it properly extracted that way....

seabassnj - maybe you should delete and reinstall your drivers on your computer and try again

Hi,

Got a problem. Just rooted my Epic (already on official 2.2). Phone is stuck at the Samsung Boot Screen. I tried popping the battery, etc. Also tried doing the restore option in clockwork. Still stuck at the Samsung boot screen. Any advise?

Did CW convert your files to EXT4? If so you need to make sure you have the right kernel for that or flash a rom for EXT4 like the ACE rom for example.

Sprint Hot Spot

Hello. I just used the one step to root. It seemed to work. Will I be able to use the sprint hot spot free now? I tried to turn it on and use it but it denied me. If not, what do i need to do to be able to do that. If you wouldn't mind can someone email it to brooks_jones0182@yahoo.com

Once you root you install a program called wireless tether for root its in the market use it and not sprints program... its covered in many places here in the forums just search a little :)
