Rumor: Froyo on 7/30

Wait hang on a sec... The latest update no long allows you to disable Sense like it used to? What?

Sprint may "have" Froyo, but Sprint isn't the one doing the software upgrade and integration with Sense, turning off functionality, or adding crapware. htc will be the one doing that work. What they add and turn off will be at Sprint's direction, but Sprint doesn't have teams of programmers working on every different model of phone they sell. The manufacturers do that work. Sprint will test it when complete.
And i'm sure wifi hotspot/tethering is at the top of Sprint's list of things to tamper with since it is offered in Froyo by default.

I think that the Froyo update will be coming soon. I look forward to it, but I can wait because Eclair is working perfectly. I'm only really looking forward to full flash support. It's great to have Android now and to have it in the EVO is even better.

With any luck we should see Froyo on EVO very soon, I think they do it by device, next maybe EVO or after that.

when talking with with the advanced tech support today at sprint i mentioned i heard tomorrow for froyo and he said they were told the 5th of Aug. So either way its very soon.

I'll be waiting till there is a good root option if it does come out. Unless I can do wireless tethering for free.

Well, now this rumor looks like it even has more merit with possibly the Desire getting Froyo as early as tomorrow. I would just love it if it was released by the end of August. With this being Sprint's flagship, for now, I am sure they might want to get it out before Verizon with Droid X and Incredible, to get more people to buy the EVO and go on the Sprint network. At least, if I was running Sprint, I would try to beat them to the punch.

Sprint first needs to get EVO's physically in stock..... It don't matter if they all of a sudden cut the price to $99 or even decided to give them away... with no stock it's almost pointless... I got a reward zone thing in the mail Monday from Best Buy offering me 1,000 bonus points if I buy and activate an EVO by July 31, 2010...... Then I went online and not a single store with in 100 miles of my house has the EVO or even the white one...

Any way... A friend of mine who actually works for a Sprint Corporate store doing repairs said he had heard (Pure Rumor here) that HTC has finished their work on Froyo for the EVO and it was now in Sprints hands to make the adjustments for their own software and Sprint WILL remove the tethering option in Froyo since they charge for that and with Froyo it would be basically free..... He told me he THINKS late August Early September for Froyo on the EVO.... But couldn't say for sure....

He has been wrong before...... but that is the rumor he has heard from co-workers..... Take it with a grain of salt....

Robbie, Sprint has had the rom for almost a month. At the time of EVO's release Froyo was completed however the EVO was not release with Froyo because the Sense UI had not yet been implemented into Froyo and tested. HTC finished the Sense UI the last week of June and sent the rom to Sprint for testing with their apps and etc. Sprint set a target date of around the 5th (confirmed) but it has not been officially announced due to possible setbacks. If this target date is correct as of today, I cannot confirm.

^^^They do with webOS, so what's to say they won't do the same for the newest flagship phone they have?

Yeah I have no clue WHEN HTC was done with Froyo and passed it on to Sprint... He just told me HTC had finished their work on Froyo for the EVO (Which I assumed meant making Sense play nice with it) I have seen the rumors of August 5 on several different web sites and I just ask him from time to time what he hears... He just repairs phones in a corporate sprint store so it's not like he gets top secret information and he just tells me what he hears... When I asked him about 2.2 on the EVO he just said Late August early September for the EVO.... Or that is what is being talk about around the shop......

2.1 does every thing I need or want it to do.... Always like new upgrades when they hit the market so will be interesting to see what happens and how much it improves the phone.....

Interesting thread. I'm rooted and running Ava-Froyo currently. It has Sense and Sprint apps. If a lone programmer can figure it out this quickly, I image that HTC and Sprint are much further along.

FWIW, I'd recommend folks go ahead and root now while there is still an easy way to do so. When Sprint pushes Froyo it probably will break the current methods to root. You'll be better off running a Froyo rom that will most likely be faster, have better battery life, and more features than the stock HTC 2.2

I'm running cyanogen build 7-24-10 and even though it says experimental I am sold! I got up from work at 4:30 this morning and unplugged my phone. When I got to work I listened to 6 hours of podcasts through google listen. I worked 8 hours and had 5 calls totaling 18 minutes and 28 text messages between my wife and kids. Connected my blue-tooth headset on the way home and talked to my wife for a half hour on the way home. It is now 9pm and I am getting 16% battery left. Thats over 14 hours with heavy podcast use. The phone boots way faster and seems really stable so far. My only complaint is the timer is missing from the clock function (I grilled scallops tonight and I use that function every time I grill) and the time date stamp is missing from the basic camera function. I like having that active when taking photos at work. But as far as the OS all I can say is WOW! Also I never cared for the picture quality using the 2.1 but this new cyanogen build takes awesome photos! All I have to say is if this is experimental I cant wait till he comes out with a full working version! :D

I've held off on installing the cyanogen builds because they don't have HTC Sense (or so I'm led to believe). Unlike a lot of folks who root, I actually like Sense and the HTC widgets.

But I agree with stoneworrior; 2.2 is very fast and more optimized. I still recommend that people take advantage of the easy root methods currently available because if you install Sprint's 2.2 it might take a LONG time to get root on it.
