I purchased a used Galaxy S III and a new SIM card. When trying to activate it sits on the activation screen and goes no further. Verizon and the guy at radio shack told me its the phone. Any thoughts or ideas on how to get this working? Any help is appreciated.

Without knowing more about the phone than you've provided (Verizon - is the model number SCH-i535? Is the firmware version 4.1.2, MF1 build? Is the phone rooted?) it's rather difficult to help you.

The first thing I'd suggest is performing a Factory Reset if you haven't already done so - Settings -> Back up and reset -> Factory data reset.

Then get the rest of the information requested:
- turn the phone off and take the battery out to find the model number and IMEI/Serial Number
- confirm with Verizon that the IMEI hasn't been blacklisted
- Settings -> About phone to find the 'Android version' and 'Build number'. Here's what it should look like:

Finally, it is possible that the SIM card is bad.

You seem to know alot about the Galaxy S3 so tell me what Samsung is doing about the poor design on the charging port.
The weld lets go and then the customer is told it is abuse? When actually it is a design flaw!

Hello, I'm new here so please bear with me. I know this is a S3 thread. But, I wanted to know...in 2014, is it worth it to purchase a Galaxy S2 or S3?? I have a Nokia Lumia 822, now. It's just not cutting it...No wi-fi calling, limited functionality aside from productivity apps like office, or Xbox stuff...I honestly chose it because, I didn't want to get into the iOs vs. Android debate. But, it's just...*shrug* Anyway, I was looking at a Galaxy device, and I was wondering if getting an older model than the Galaxy 4 would be worth my money. I don't have a large budget, which is why I'm looking at the older models. But, would I be better off just waiting until like X-mas for money and hope I can afford something better, then? Thank you for the help in advance.

can find for S2?

Can find what for S2? Most of what's written here should apply to the S2 as well.

I have no relationship with Samsung, so really can't address anything they might or might not be doing. But given that they've sold some 40 million S3's, and there are very, very few reports of broken ports, I'm not convinced there is an endemic problem here.

This question has nothing to do with battery life, so you probably should have started a new thread. But whether a particular phone is "worth it" really depends on what you'll do with it, and how much each model costs. If you're like my wife, who has only a couple of apps, and uses her phone for calls, a little bit of texting, and an occasional email, the S2 would work fine. And some people will prefer a smaller phone. But the S3 probably doesn't cost much more than an S2 these days, and has a better screen, a faster processer, more memory, etc.

For me, all the extra features of the S4 don't really matter to me, so I don't think the S4 is worth the extra money for my needs. But if some of the features sound really important to you, you might feel differently.

As I said, it depends a lot of the relative cost of each phone, but for my needs (which may be different than yours) the S3 is in the price/performance sweet spot in Samsung's lineup. But look at other phones, too. The Nexus 5 and Moto X are also good phones with some nice features.

Thank you. I thought my question might have been ok, since it was more of a 'tips' question. But, I digress. As far as features go, I guess any of the Galaxy line should offer what I am looking for. What I really was curious about is 'upgradeability'. I know that certain hardware can only handle firmware up to a certain point. I just didn't want to go looking for something like an S2 or S3 and learn that they are so far out of date...like getting an Apple iPhone 3GS...not exactly a worthwhile idea, right now. But, thank you again, for the information. It was most helpful, and I can now look forward to my purchase without being worried that I'm handling a dinosaur.

OK, given that question, here are my thoughts:

The S2 is not likely to get any upgrades beyond where it is now. There are rumors that the S3 will get 4.4, and I think there's a high likelihood that the international S3 will get it. Whether the NA versions do will depend more on the carriers than Samsung. If the S5 is available, they may be more interested in getting S3 owners to upgrade to a new device. The S4, of course, will get more updates than the S3 will.

Meyerweb, this is a good write up. Not 2 criticize, but this doesn't quite cover "Everything I want to know about an S3". This is my 1st post on this forum, probably my 1st post on any forum in years. However I used 2 B an avid contributor back in the day. I'm now a retired moderator, But I still do a lot of research though. I came across this thread lookin 4 a root 4 a Sprint S3 L710 with 4.3. I copied this some where & thought it would B a good addition 2 UR thread. This is advanced stuff though. I don't remember exactly where I got it from though. If NE1 knows where it came from please post a link so credit can go where it's due. Again I didn't write this, I copied it.

What is a PRL and what it does:

PRL=(Preferred Roaming List)

The PRL is a list of information that resides in the memory of some kinds of digital phones. It lists the radio frequencies the phone can use in various geographic areas.

The part of the list for each area is ordered by the bands the phone should try to use first. Therefore it's a kind of priority list for which towers the phone should use.

The PRL helps determine which home-network towers to use, and also which towers belonging to other networks to use in roaming situations (areas where the home network
has no coverage.) When roaming, the PRL may instruct the phone to use the network with the best roaming rate for the carrier, rather than the one with the strongest signal at the moment.

Since a PRL tells the phone "where" to search for a signal, as carrier networks change over time, an updated PRL may be required for a phone to "see" all of the coverage that it should,
both with the home network and for roaming.

Things Not To Do With A Flashed Phone

1. NO OTA Android Updates Period (You will break your flash)

2. No OTA Programming *228, *22890, *22800, *22801 or any other Variants

3. Some Rom's do not play well with Flashed Phones do your research before flashing.

4. Never do a RTN (Return to Network) Reset ##786# (Most definitely will break your flash)

5. Some Radios cause issues if you flash (If the phone is working leave it be)

6. Factory Reset ( I recommend not to do this also, some phones it will break things period)

6. PRLS ..... aww my favorite, everyone thinks these are the answer to all their prayers

a. If the phone is working leave it be (my personal stance)
b. Some PRL's are not EVDO and will break your 3G
c. I have posted many PRL's above that will work with 3G (Latest one I modded is 65005, my recommendation for all carrier phones)

7. No Phone Number Change (You change your carrier assigned number, you must reflash)

Why Is My 3G Data Slow?

It's a complaint I hear everyday from people using flashed smartphones performed by them or another flashing provider...

Why are my speeds so slow and is it possible to improve the situation?
There are a variety of reasons why 3G data speeds may be less than stellar, and each one requires a different solution.

Before assuming there's a problem, though, make sure you understand the realistic capabilities of your service.

VERIZON/Page Plus/Selectel:

2G 1xRTT: 50-100kbps download and upload with bursts to 144 kbps
3G EVDO Rev-A: (shows up as "3G" on your phone): 600-1400kbps download with bursts to 3Mbps, 200-800kbps upload with bursts to 1.8Mbps

(Don't get to caught up in running speedtest as these can be very confusing and fool you at times into thinking you have a problem when actually
the way they test and the servers they use get congested also)

POTENTIAL PROBLEM #1: Weak signal

If you're too far away from the tower (or if there are a lot of obstructions/interference between you and the tower), your device won't be able
to pick up a strong signal and your performance will suffer.

Solution: Try other locations in your home or area you are in, some areas do not get great signal strength and this could be your issue.

POTENTIAL PROBLEM #2: Tower overcrowding (Network Congestion)

The bandwidth available from a cell tower is shared amongst all the users connecting to the tower. A cell tower can only provide so much bandwidth,
and the more users there are connecting to the tower, the slower everyone's speeds will be.

Is this YOUR problem? If you notice that your speeds tend to follow a pattern most days (for example, nice and fast late at night or early in the day but slower in the evening when everyone is home from work and school) and you've confirmed that the problem isn't signal-related (by testing your speeds at home and then again somewhere closer to the tower), you'll know your tower is simply being used by lots of other subscribers at the same time.

Solution: Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about this (other than consider switching to a different provider who might have more capacity at their towers or isn't as oversold in your area).

POTENTIAL PROBLEM #3: Incorrectly Performed Flash

It's very common for flashed phones to have been done incorrectly.

Is this YOUR problem? This is very possibly the source of the problem if your flash was done incorrectly or you made changes to your setup recently.

Solution: You'll need to either troubleshoot the phone and or reflash the problem phone.

POTENTIAL PROBLEM #4: Tower issues

Providers periodically do maintenance or upgrade work on cell towers, which can disrupt service; other factors like severe weather occasionally damage cell towers and cause problems.

Is this YOUR problem? If your service suddenly degrades significantly and doesn't improve much during non-peak hours (which it would if the problem was overcrowding), and you've confirmed it's not a problem with your flash, the problem likely lies with the tower. The best way to confirm is to take your device several miles away where you'll be connecting to a different tower and test there ? if everything works fine when connected to a different tower, you'll know something is amiss with your home tower.

Solution: Out of your control, bear with it until the provider finishes work and repairs.....

Potential Problem #5: Sprint and USSC Devices

I hate to say it but I have seen some Sprint/USSC phones have this issue, likely due to weaker radios and or hardware implemented in the device.

Is this YOUR problem? This is very possibly the source of the problem if your flash was done correctly and you verify that other devices on the network in the same location as yours get consistently better data speeds.

Solution: Verify flash is correct and that your connected at EVDO in settings and passwords have passed authentication. If so this most likely a Sprint/USSC device issue out of control by the user. Replace device with another Cellphone Carrier brand and most of the time problem will be solved. (I see this allot with some of the Samsung S3 Devices from Sprint/USSC, almost like certain lots had a weak radio for whatever reason)

In the end your speeds can be related to any or all of these issues, and a proper flash is key to performing at optimal speeds.
Sometimes as much as we hate to admit a professional flasher is needed to correct speed issues, you would not believe some of the poor flashes I see when I read preflashed phones everyday that so called professionals performed

Thanks for your contributions, but you need to look at when this thread was created. And the title is a bit tongue in cheek. I even point out in the first post that it's not everything you might want to know. It was intended as, and still serves well as, an introduction to the S3. It was never intended to cover all the advanced items you listed. Those might be better discussed in a new thread dedicated to advanced topics.

It's also wasn't, and isn't, intended to be a guide to rooting--there's are multiple forums dedicated to that topic.

How would I know my s3's firmware?
Go to Settings -> More (if using the Tab view) -> About phone and look at 'Android version'
Is there a kitkat update for s3?
Not yet, but it has been announced (although I don't remember if it's coming to the International model) and should be coming in the next few months.

There's rumors going around that there will be a 4.4 update for the S3 this month.. But those are just rumors. We won't know for sure if they'll come out this month or later in the year.

Anyone can start a Q&A thread. If you have a question, start a thread about it, and lot's of people will jump in to help.

Well, it would have been a good start if you had posted this in a thread about broken screens/black screens (since there are plenty of similar posts), rather than in a thread about battery life.

But you're here, so off we go...
This doesn't sound like a software problem, but you can try booting into Safe mode just to be sure http://support.verizonwireless.com/support/devices/knowledge_base.html/59242

Assuming that doesn't pan out, you can try booting into Recovery mode or Download mode:
- you use Recovery mode to clear the system cache and to Factory Reset
- you use Download (aka Odin) mode (showing the Android guy) to load/reload firmware
- the key sequences to enter both modes are very similar, and they are timing dependent so it may take a few tries to get it working
-- Recovery = Volume Up + Home + Power
-- Download = Volume Down + Home + Power
- for either, you start with the phone completely off
- press and hold the required keys simultaneously, and release them all when you see the swirling logo (not the static white text)

Try Recovery mode first (use the Volume rockers to navigate; use the Power button to select) and if it boots into this mode just clear the cache and then restart.

Since that probably won't make a difference your only other choice is to replace the screen assembly:

(It could be that the connector between the screen and mainboard got knocked slightly loose, but I doubt it. Couldn't hurt to check though, as long as you're comfortable with taking the phone apart.)

To post a new thread, navigate to the forum you want to post in. On the left side, near the top, just under the forum name you'll see a button that says "Post New Thread." (This is assuming you're using the web to view the forum.)

As for unlocking your phone, what is it you hope to accomplish? "Unlocking" usually refers to SIM unlocking a GSM phone (e.g., AT&T and T-Mobile) so you can use it on a different carrier. That doesn't apply to CDMA phones from Sprint or Verizon.
