Sad battery life

Screenshot says it all. 12.5 hours since unplug, all on wifi, very little screen on and over 50% battery lost. Android OS accounted for 58% of that, screen for 13%. I got the GNex on day one, but this started about a week ago. Frustrating.

That's not how my battery screen even looks. You have a rom or something?
And to top it off my android is always comes in second to my screen. But then again my screen is always on full brightness. My phone lasts me a whole day during my work week.

At any rate that screenshot is either not stock or its edited.

Well mine can standby a couple days so I think something is up with that thing.
Have you checked to see if any apps are killling your battery but are not reporting it?

Yup. Like I mentioned in a previous post, I got my GNex the morning Verizon offered it. Everything worked great with battery life up until about a week ago. When I say great, I got up 18 hours with light to moderate use (extended battery) and screen was always #1 with Android OS a distance #2 or so of battery use.

The two apps I could think of that might be causing problems (but I don't see any issues in the 2-3 diagnostic apps I'm using) are Lightflow and the unofficial ICS Swype, both installed about a week a or so ago. Since I don't see any exceptional CPU usage from either app and since I see a constant Wifi waking with screen off (which I did not see before), There must be something else going on. Right now with the Tasker app it's not as bad, but I do hope 4.0.3 will fix this issue.

I found my problem. For some reason i was logged into Latitude, which i never am since i dont use it. Must have happened during the last Maps update. I suspect it was constantly checking my location and waking uo the phone for that. I turned it off, battery usage back to normal.

I haven't had amazing battery life since my old Blackberry Curve. My GN does a lot more, so I like to think that's why the battery life isn't great.

You can turn off WiFi when your phone is a sleep. Tap WiFi, tap menu and then click the advanced title. You will see "Keep WiFi on during sleep". You will have three option's. Your's would have been on always. You do not need Tasker for this. I hope that helps out a little.

I believe that it is better to leave it to always on. I'm not an expert but the constant switching from on to off when the phone tries to sleep is gonna drain the battery faster. Correct me if I'm wrong tho.

Well the consensus is to keep wifi on. So I've been trying out for a couple of days. Tonight I went too several bars and every one I hit their wifi which made the phone go off. I know I can turn that off but I like the prompt when my phone is awake.

My battery sucked, it's just not for me. Maybe I'll try out again sometime. But I think it's a fallacy to just say hands down wifi on all the time is the only way to go. Yes obviously if you're at home or the office all day on wifi it's better to push under wifi. But if you're going out our even to the mall there's just to much connecting trying to go on.

Who knows, maybe i'm wrong, but unless you get 16 hours like I do (with my wireless sleep on), suit yourself

If you are near WiFi then keep it on all day but if you know you'll be away from it for like an hour or longer I'd turn it off because it uses less battery than the cell radios but obviously is draining when it is constantly scanning. Try opening up the camera app and kill it because the sensor may be open. But I would get a better battery state app to allow you to pinpoint it and/or root and flash a new ROM and/or kernel.

I just looked at my history details and it shows that the Wi-Fi is only accounting for 2% of the battery usage.
The main issue with OP's battery life seems to be the Awake portion that seems to be killing his. Maybe Facebook or Twitter updating or possibly a weather widget?

That's 12 hours of essentially not using it as I probably used it for no more than 15 minutes in that 12 hour period. I work from home, so I'm in wifi all day, that's why my wifi is on. Yesterday I did not use it for 12 hours and it drained by over 50%. A week ago this was not the case as I was getting up to 17 hours out of it with moderate or more use (yes, I have the extended battery pack).

I will try the aforementioned apps to see if I can track down what's keeping it awake. Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

I would urge you to wait for the 4.0.3 update and if it doesn't fix it, exchange. If you have used your phone at all and in 12.5 hrs it is down to 50% something is wrong. Unless you are getting notifications every few minutes, you should get a few days a least from standby.

Maybe it could have something to do with your router settings. Are you losing connection at times from your ISP?

I had this same issue. My battery life was horrible. My battery stats would show android os as taking up over 50% if my battery. The wake time would be the same as the up time of my phone. For me the culprit was location services. Specifically the Google location services. I turned both of them off and left gps on. Now my wake time is about 2 hours in an average day.

Guess it really depends on the area you're in and what rom/kernel you're using.

I'm getting great battery life with BuglessBeast nightly 1/5/12 and Apex v3 kernel. 4G on all the time, facebook, twitter, craigslist app, messaging, email and i'm down to 63% after 15 hours off charger. So far, I'm happy with this combination.

Should you have to load new rom/kernel and tweak to get decent battery life, no, but at least we can easily fix the issues on the GNex (or at least attempt to).

Battery life is fine, you people need to realize that this is common for most smartphones. If I get 12 hrs of battery I'm happy and I get more than that.

so quick question, it looks like if google location services is turned off, even if GPS is on google maps can't locate my position. What's the use of keeping GPS on with location off?

I always have WiFi on when I'm in my room so the battery life it's ok to me. But as I was reading this thread, I decided to test the WiFi options in advance settings. I fully charged my GN past midnight and in the 'keep WiFi on during sleep' option, I chose Never. I Woke up at 10:36 am and realized it drained my battery even more. So I went back to advance settings and changed it back to 'Always'.

Lucky you guys haha, here's mine running codename rom 1.1.1 with leankernel 1.6.1

As you can see I have used it pretty much non stop to listen to my songs saved on my phone along with 4G off and 3G set. Using FB and twitter here and there. And some YouTube videos

Hmm I'm not sure how to decipher better battery stats, and for some reason my gn seems to be using a ton of batteries. I've also been playing around with it so I'll try to do a real battery test tomorrow during work and post the battery stats. Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light onto my battery problem because right now, even with juice defender and being very wary of my use of the phone, I last maybe 12 hours. Max.

Do you use Word with Friends? By default its set to check their network every 5 minutes! You can set it to never so that it checks when you run Word with Friends instead of every 5 minutes constantly keeping your 4G connection active/busy. This has doubled the battery life on my girlfriend's HTC Android phone. Also set your email programs to never check as well.
