I've had my A33 for a year, no problems. In the last week or so it's been overheating. Have it on battery saving (have since I got it )
Does anyone have any idea why this suddenly started happening ?

Welcome to Android Central! How's the cell signal? Poor cell signal is a common cause for overheating, since the phone has to work harder to stay connected.

Go to the Battery section of your system settings -- are there any apps that are using an inordinate amount of battery? Also turn on the option to show system usage -- any system processes that are using a lot of battery?

I would recommend you to do a factory reset. Also, it is a myth that reducing the CPU frequency makes it use less power. Instead, it makes the CPU work harder and reach 100% usage more often and use more battery. You also know that more power consumption = more heat generation. So, if you have "Limit CPU speed to 70%" enabled under Power saver's options, disable it. Also, before doing a factory reset, check your phone for bloatware, and uninstall any if present. Then post about your results here again.
