Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

Need help

Well, everything went well until the phone was turned off and back on. it wont get passed SAMSUNG black screen white letters. i can boot into the menu using down/camera/power, but i really dont feel like wiping my phone completely. is there anything im missing/ should be doing???

(this is the first time I've tried doing this)

Okay, so I am going to do this. Complete noob here, so bare with me. I have downloaded the samsung drivers and installed them. I downloaded Odin3+v1.61 and the Samsung dk28.

I extracted Odin and launched Odin. In the PIT field I choose the victory file, in the PDA field I choose the DK28 file.

Boot into recovery, plugged into computer, rectangle box on the left went yellow.

If i hit start then I will have stock FroYo on my Epic, right?

From there I go to http://forum.androidcentral.com/epic-4g-roms-hacks/42178-rooting-ultimate-guide-v1-5-0-a.html and do procedure 2.

Then I??

Basically after I hit start in Odin and I get the success light I have FroYo. I then want to get EXT4 and a ROM. What procedure do I do after that? I am sure it was answered but like I said I am nervous to ef something up.

Thanks for the help!

Paul, are you saying that the link on page 1 is 3.0.0.5? If that is the case, which clockwork version do I need?
Thanks...Ken.

Yes the very first procedure, step #2 is the link to the new OneClickRootCWM3.zip. That will root/install ClockWorkMod v3.0.0.5 and EXT 4 file system all in one package.

Just remember once on this newest ClockWorkMod v3.0.0.5 you can only flash the newest ROMs supporting the "Edify script".

All other DK-28 Froyo ROMs you will have to will have to use the older ClockWorkMod v2.5.1.0 also found further down on the 1st post page under "Archives for outdated procedures"

I know this is getting confusing but it will eventually work itself out with all the new updates. Best thing is to decide what ROM you want and then narrow down your options from there.

Okay, so I just read the first post again. It says all you need is a dk28 (rooted ot not) to start the procedure. So, after I do the Odin thing I am not rooted just running 2.2, right?

So then I go back to the original post and follow the beginning of PROCEDURE?

Just to make things clear before anyone goes to the new Clockwork v3.0.0.5, if you were a fan of using many of the custom themes & addons listed here on the Compendium of Froyo Themes & Add-Ons | Last Update 12/31 page they are NO LONGER USABLE WITH CLOCKWORK V3.0.0.5. I know this was mentioned in the first post of this thread explaining things but just in case you over looked it.

You will have to wait until themes & add ons supporting (Edify scripts) is created. I'm sure Ragnarokx will post them as any become available and mark them appropriately.

If anything concerning what I have posted here is incorrect I apologize and please feel free to speak up.

I can probably convert any of those mods to the Edify script. If anyone needs one converted just post in that thread and I'll give it a shot.

I hate to ask this again, but based off Quadrant benchmark, I don't see any performance increases post changing to EXT4! I was getting around 1000 or so with eclaire and about the same after installing EXT4 running Quantum Rom. I haven't tried Midnight yet but would a different ROM make that big a difference?

I have tried to duplicate same parameters when running Quadrant (closed all programs, after a fresh restart, etc).

Thanks, Ken.

I wish I could help but I don't use benchmarking programs, sorry. I find it better to test my phone by using it.

You're not giving a whole lot of info to go off of - but here is a sure fire fix that should work: go to the bottom of the 1st post of this thread where it says "New: Restore to Froyo DK28". Follow that procedure to get to stock Froyo. Once done, follow the steps in this thread and you should be golden.

You got it. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Thanks Ragnarokx. So after following the newest PROCEDURE on page 1. I will be rooted, running 2.2 with clockwork recovery. Then I need to boot into clockwork to flash a new ROM. What ROM do you suggest I use then that is compatible with this?

The other day I followed the instructions and rooted my phone to Quantum Rom using CWM 2.5.5
How do I update to CWM 3.0

I'm new to this stuff. :o

Quantum 2.7 and Bonzai 1.1.3 are both good choices. I'm using Bonzai for now as there should be a major update to Quantum soon, so I'll switch over when that's released. You can't go wrong with either.

Just go to the first post of this thread and follow the [Procedure]. After that you can upgrade to Quantum 2.7 if you like also.

Thanks. That was simple!
At the xda forums it says I should perform a full wipe before I flash Quantum 2.7

How do I go about doing that or is it necessary since I'm already running Q2.5?

Edit:
I think I just need to use CWM 3.0 to wipe the data and cache.

You are correct. Wipe with CWM 3.0

EXT4 installed?

Hey guys I just want to start off by saying thanks to all the helpful posts and detailed instructions. I finally got tired of waiting for the Froyo update and decided to do custom roms.

I installed EXT4 I think I did and I am currently running Midnight ROM. I was just curious if there was anyway to make sure I installed EXT4 properly.

Maybe it is just me, but since the original instructions have been modifed and updated, they are very confusing, having to jump around and go to multiple pages. Could the someone rewrite them in a simple step by step format again, possibly with quick download links?

I am on DK28 and have rooted with OneClickRootCWM3. I have confirmed root by downloading Titanium Backup. But now I am confused a bit to what the next steps are exactly.

Alright now you simply need to download the ROM of your choice that supports the new Edify scripts/CWM3.

1.) Download ROM of choice
2.) Shut down phone
3.) Boot into CWM3 (volume down+camera+power)
4.) Flash the ROM
5.) Reboot system and enjoy!

But dont I need to do something with the EXT4 Formatter?

No, you are done. The EXT4 Formatter is from the old method.

You are now rooted/CWM3/EXT4/Edify script converted. Follow threw with my previous post and your only a download and flash away from enjoying a new ROM. :)

That was scary easy.

So from now on if I want to flash a new rom I just make sure it is EXT4, copy the zip to sd card, Boot in CWM3 and flash? That simple?

You got it. I would also recommend using Clockwork to do a factory reset/clear cache before flashing a new ROM just to minimize possible conflicts.

And btw I edited the Procedure to make it more clear that once you have Clockwork 3.0.0.5 installed you're ready to ROM flash.
