Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

As a Photographer, I can tell you this 13mp camera does suck! As a consumer with a cell phone for a camera, this camera rocks :) It will not look like a DSLR ... not ever. When I compare this to my Note 2, it is better! When I compare it to a 10 year old 6mp DSLR, the Note 3 camera sucks! I can't lie, I did buy this phone for the camera .... I do wish it was a lot better, but for the size of sensor, lens & convenience .... I'm not going to complain at this time!

Cheers, Jon

Did you try to change the settings in the camera app back to 13mp? If you did then I guess everyone's disappointed in the camera

I did have it set to 13 .... I don't get your 2nd sentence! How does that make everyone disappointed? I don't think your reading everything here!

It's inferior compared to the iPhone or Lumia but it's still decent

conclusion...iPhone 5 photos look more real. Note 3 photos are over exposed.

wow, i guess eye of the beholder because i personally think the note 3 photos are crisper.....the bottom of the first iphone pic is a bit fuzzy....and you can more clearly see the blades on the knife in the note 3 pic of the second pic....mission accomplished i'm convinced the note 3 pics are better.... :)

What more would you want from a phone? Especially considering this isn't a camera phone nor does it try to sell it as so such as the iPhone.

But look for wifi camera accessories if you want professional images.

wow....that's beautiful....

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

As a Photographer, when ever I get a new body or lens, it takes practice with everyone of them to get the most out of my purchase! I also RTM at least 3 times to get the most out of what I can & can't do with the camera! This allows me to learn my limitations & my cameras' limitations!

Keep Practicing, Cheers, Jon

i agree....takes time to learn a new piece of equipment. i was playing with the exposure settings for indoor shots and getting better results....at the end of the day it does a decent job in a pinch.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

To the OP....did you remove the plastic from the camera lens??? I dont know about the Note 3...but when I brought my s4...the camera lens had plastic on it....its impossible to see unless you know its there....

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

I don't know if I'm using the camera wrong or if my phone is a lemon or what. But I am not happy with the camera quality of the Note 3. It just seems like every picture I take is really grainy and almost as if it has a filter applied to it to make it look like brushstrokes. It doesn't seem like 13mp at all, it acts more like it's a low quality front facing camera.

For instance, these photos of my cat have this filtered blurry effect. I took these with the auto mode.

When I turned on the flash the photo turned out a little better, although I'd rather have a crisp photo like this without the flash on.

So what's the deal, is this camera just bad with indoor lighting? I'm holding it extremely steading when taking photos, so the quality can't be due to that.

LOL..you read my mind. I was waiting for someone else to say it since I wasn't brave enough to say it myself. This is by far, the worst camera I have had out of my last four phones. GS2, EVO LTE, and the Note 2. Even the Note 1 camera blew this away. I expected so much out of this camera as the GS4 seemed to take really nice pics. These pics just aren't very sharp and always out of focus. I figured either my settings are messed up or I got a lemon. I even just visited the pictures post before I came upon this post and was thinking to myself, don't anyone else notice that these pics all suck. Out of two pages of pics, I cant find a single one that I would consider great, nothing close to what I got from the Note 2. I also find the camera settings overly complicated. I just hope we both are wrong and this camera really is much better than we think. I just took some pics of my wife going out and I could not believe how bad they turned out. Out of 15 snaps, I don't have one that I can keep. With a 13mp sensor and image stabilization, you would think that this camera had no where else to go but up...SMDH......

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

I think the camera is ok for what it is. Took these a few days ago.

Part of the issue with these is different angles affect the lighting.. I've taken some great photos with my GN3.. Nothing as good as my DSLRs, but good for a cellphone.

To truly do a comparison, setup the lighting and angles of subject the same for both devices. Also, use the same settings if possible.

That's just my experience when comparing camera quality.

I'm seeing the same thing you are seeing. The Note 3 camera does too much "smoothing" of the photos... It makes the low light photos look like crap. They need to release a software update to make the phone do less processing of the photos.

My Galaxy S3 camera took sharper pictures in low light conditions. I've been playing with the Note 3 camera and am learning how to take better low light photos... but the camera on this phone needs some work.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

UGH... just as I thought... this is a SOFTWARE problem. I installed another camera app on my Note 3 and I took some photos back to back with the 3rd party app and the Samsung camera app. The pictures I took with the 3rd party app indoors in low light look way better and sharper than the ones taken with the Samsung camera app.

Hopefully the low light picture issues get taken care of with a software update. For now I guess people who are experiencing the over smoothing which makes pictures look a bit blurred in low light can just use a different camera app.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

My 2cents. This phone takes GREAT pictures for a cell phone.... Any cell phone by the way. Unless you need to take pictures for some high end event this phone is more than enough to take a great pictures of whatever you need it to do!

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

I wonder if the S4's camera is different and then better?

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Try coming from a Droid X and you would love any cell phone camera. I am not bitchin, there are sooooo many things this phone does well. I stayed with the old X waiting for Moto to come out with a decent camera. It never happened, I will take this puppy anyday.

There is a setting on the GN3 camera settings Smart Stabilization for low lighting pictures. These 2 pictures shows with it off and with it on.

SS is on

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

I agree with OP. I never realized how important a decent camera was to me until I got this phone. It is ever hard for me to take a non blurry pic of my dog sitting down. Thankfully I just got the device so I have some time to decide if it is worth keeping.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

You may have a defective camera if all your shots are coming out blurry. Since you just got it, I would call and request a replacement. This happened to a couple guys on the S3 forum I frequent, and after a replacement, they no longer had camera problems. Don't just assume your camera doesn't take good pictures, (Especially on newer devices) it could very well be a hardware issue.
